COD: Black Ops multiplayer is crap.

You can edit the config_mp.cfg file and change scoresping_interval from 100 to 25, and maxbars from 4 to 10. It's still not as simple as displaying a number but at least you get a much better idea what your ping is.

I'm on 360, but that's cool to know.

Seriously. Are we playing the same game? The only time I've ever come across anything like this were the frame per second stutters when the game first came out. Those have been largely fixed.
Connectivity quality between Modern Warfare 2's P2P and Black Op's client server model is like night and day. Black Ops is far better.
Are you talking about overall performance or connection quality, both?

I'm talking about connectivity to the servers in Black Ops. Some servers feel responsive and others will feel laggy. Sometimes a server will start out smooth then become laggy when it fills up.
I think the servers are overselling their bandwidth but maybe it's a server setting or lag compensation or glitching. I can't figure it out.

CoDMW2 was smooth when we had our lobby leader host the server, on their quad cores with at least 1Mb upload speed
The advantage of MW2 is you have control of what you run on your own PC. The disadvantage is you don't know what another host is running on their PC. They could be downloading, shelling out of the game or running their graphics way to high for their hardware.
Sometimes you could tell the host they are lagging and they would leave and come back, so another more capable PC could take over hosting. It was stupid you couldn't browse the servers before you join them. Especially since you would end up joining the same laggy server, if you didn't wait long enough to join another game.

Quite often it will feel like you are running through water on the CoDBO dedicated servers, then it will suddenly smooth out and you feel like you are moving and firing twice as fast. All with the same ping and FPS.

Well put. This is exactly how I feel when playing Black Ops on dedicated servers on my PC.

That's weird that we have such different experiences with the game. MW2 is by far the smoother of the two for me. Do you play on standard public servers?

That's just different connections to different servers. You won't have a great connection everywhere.

That doesn't help some dude who just wants to join a pub game at random.

You like having to take shots in the dark to get a decent game going? That's bullshit. With the server browser in Black Ops you see can filter by ping, game type, and level. Choice good. Getting stuck in some pub game at random with a garbage host isn't. Fuck that.

Peer to peer for a game like CoD is flawed at the most basic levels of how computers connect to each other.

Well for MW2 I played using regular "IWNet". For Black Ops I just play on whatever ranked servers I like.

Same here. I remember seeing you on MW2 actually. :)

MW2 far more smooth and crisp for me in terms of movement. I haven't played BLOPS in a month or two, but I doubt if it's changed much.

I agree with you that Black Ops is a step in the right direction having dedicated servers and being able to choose the server you will play on.
It's still needs work as you will sometimes join a server with a ping under 50 and it won't play smoothly. These are paid commercial servers and they should be consistent.
You should be able t host your own server and not have to pay for a commercial server with poor performance. People learn which servers are good and add them to their favorites.
Until the last patch our servers would usually crash after you got them populated.
Nothing like running around playing boring deathmatch in black and white for an hour, while you wait for 6 people so you can play the game type in color you actually wanted to. That was an original but stupid idea. You can't familiarize yourself with the routes and choke points if you have no flags. Why didn't they not let you earn XP until you get 6 people if they are worried about boosting?
At least you can run a private listen server now but good luck finding people to play with since they are unranked.

CoDMW2 is not peer to peer. It is still a client-server model where the host is a listen server you also play on. You don't connect directly to each client, they all go through the host. The issue isn't that computers aren't powerful enough to host the server you play on, it's that you can't browse for servers and you can't even host a server without being there, because it won't start the next map without the host.
I had better luck getting connected to a good server with MW2 but Black Ops has only been out for 3 months so hopefully they'll work all the bugs out in time. The last patch helped a lot.

The CoD franchise has been going downhill since CoDWaW. It had free dedicated servers, 4 player co-op and Nazi Zombies. People are still making excellent maps for it.
Eliminating user maps and charging for DLC and commercial servers is just a money grab.
