CM Hyper 212+ vs Rocketfish Universal

I was looking at getting the Cooler Master Hyper 212+ and found the Rocketfish Universal Cooler at Best Buy. http://www.bestbuy.com/site/Rocketfish%26%23153;+-+Universal+CPU+Cooler/9462609.p?id=1218108988702&skuId=9462609&st=Cooler%20Master%20Hyper%20212%20Plus&cp=1&lp=2
It looks identical to the CM and is available locally (which I can pick up this weekend vs waiting a week to have one shipped). Does anyone know if this is the same cooler and maybe is just Best Buy's private label? Anyone have any experience with this cooler?

I'm looking at the same thing, lol. I have a $10 best buy certificate so I can get it for like $20+tax. Thinking it might be enough to hold me over at least. This stock 955 is just TOO loud.
 
Just in case you were wondering. I just picked up and installed this cooler. I'm not sure if I did the arctic silver correctly. I just put a dab in the middle and tried to place the heatsink contact right on top. It spread out a bit.but not that much.

Temps seem to be holding and no explosions yet. Going to stress test it a bit.
 
I re-applied the compound yesterday with similar results. I used some methods described at other sites when using HDT coolers, which this is.

Again, I believe this is only temporary. I'd rather pick up something from a known quality brand, maybe get better results. I also think it's partly due to my cases airflow.
 
I've never seen instructions (or a blob of thermal grease) like that before. How can twisting a little bit get it even? A lot of people have done testing to come up with their methodology. Thermal grease is to fill in the small cracks that are really unseen so there is the best heat transfer possible. The metals transfer heat better than the grease, so you want as little grease as possible..just enough to fill those cracks. BTW some thermal grease takes days or even weeks to get to their peak performance.

I seem to hover around 45C. It's hard for me to tab out of games to see the temps during. Stress testing with like prime95 is really pushing beyond what I imagine I'd ever reach (usage wise) during normal stuff. So I don't feel that's wholly accurate. When I exit a game though I don't seem to be much higher than 45C. Maybe by a few degrees.
 
Spreading the paste on the CPU causes air bubbles. All the research I've done lately says to put it on in a line or just a small blob the size of an uncooked grain of rice, but because of HDT, maybe the size of a pea
 
45C is pretty good. prime95 should tell you what the max should be, so if you are around 45C with P95 your doing great!

I use a razer to spread it as thin as possible. How does it even get across the whole CPU if you don't spread it? I understand it will spread out a bit, but I can't imagine it would spread out evenly.
 
Yeah I understand what you're coming from, this is just from research I've done. They say to not spread it because it will, in-turn, cause air pockets to form. There are different ways to apply it to the bottom of the heatsink that will spread it evenly due to pressure. There is an article on frostytech about it
 
I'll check it out. I've never had a problem spreading it manually. I can't imagine (but I could be wrong) that there would be bubbles unless they are microscopic. I ordered a hyper 212+, but even with the Intel supplied HS I'm still getting 69C temps at 100% usage. If the new 212 gets them into the 40's, I'll be thrilled.

Post your results please. I just ordered one as well for my 965. Unfortunately before I install it I'm in the market for a new case. Mine is to small, and has no cable management holes, thus causing more heat and less airflow.
 
I ordered mine from Cooler Master so I'm not sure how quick it'll come. As soon as it does I'll be happpy to let you know the new stats. Enjoy looking for a case. I've been considering it too. I'm using on old Thermaltake Xaser. It has 7 fans but they are 80mm. I'd like a Corsair Obsidian case. What are you considering?
 
The rocketfish has a 92mm fan with 3 heatpipes. The CM Hyper 212, is 4 heatpipes with 120mm fan. So this means rocketfish could be Hyper Tx3, but not Hyper 212.
 
I'm glad I went with CM then. I'm hoping it come soon. I've started folding for team 33 but I hate it being so loud and hot. Also want to OC it to about 3.5Ghz.
 
well I can tell u the RF is not an OCZ Vendetta then, dif mount. It is close though

That's perfectly fine. Some people prefer to spread it out themselves, but that takes extra time, and I'd rather let the cooler do the spreading, so it makes a better contact, by filling any contours, etc by force.

On a side note, I recently bought the Hyper 212+ at MicroCenter for $30.

Crap. I paid almost $30 from CM after shipping. Oh well...it's on its way. Anyone know how loud the fan on it is?

You are correct. It's currently on sale (just checked two minutes ago) for $19.99. Shipping adds another $6, or you can do in-store pickup if close to a Microcenter.

FYI: "Usually ships in 7-21 business days" if you don't go the in-store route.

I've done many a days deciding on a case, and I was about 2 seconds away from buying that Corsair Obsidian (one of the most beautiful cases I've ever laid eyes on). But I decided with a Lian Li PC-A70F. It's got a minimilistic style to it as well, but it has 2 front and 2 back fans, for better airflow. The Corsair Obsidian is 100% made for water cooling, and I'm not getting that anytime soon. Besides, if I DO decide to upgrade, this Lian Li case has PLENTY of room for it, with 2 holes in the back for tubes. It doesn't have management holes per say BUT, there is plenty of room behind the motherboard try and a plastic clip for keeping cables organized. I am going to use tape on the back of the case to hold the wires where I want them. Which I am okay with doing, because I spent 180 shipped on this, opposed to 270 shipped, with that.
I also just got my Hyper 212+ in the mail. Thing is big haha. I am excited to install it, but I'm going to wait for my new case to get here. I'm upgrading from an Centurion 5 to that Lian Li. It's gonna blow my world.

Big in terms of width? Height? I was using a Tuniq Tower 120 before this and I'm happy with how much skinner it is and the fact that I could attach the fan after I've installed the tower onto the motherboard. It was a royal pain to work around the width of the tuniq tower especially in more cramped spaces like when I used it in an Antec P180.

Yeah, it's about 6 inches taller and longer, and about an inch wider (my new case). I LOVE the fact that I can move the fan up or down on the heatsink as well. It gives my tall RAM heatsinks more room

Also, for those of you WITH the hyper 212+, does that middle screw tighten? Or does it just fit into the hole in the heatsink bracker when it's screwed down? I can't seem to get it to tighten

I was looking at water cooling, so I liked the Corsair. Now that I have the 212 I'll have to figure out what I'm going to do. It came today and I don't think it will fit without the lid off. This will be the first time this big thing is too small!

Haha, I tried to screw it in in the beginning until I realized it's just a placeholder holding down the tower as you screw in the four corners of the bracket.

Wait...really? That thing is monstrous! From what I've read, the thing should fit in something that is 7.95 inches or wider.
 
Read? Wha? Yeah well I be too stupid to read BEFORE I buy something. I guess that means I (have to) get a new case. What a shame! I'll just explain to the wife why I HAVE to get it not that I WANT it.

I guess I'm confused, because the Corsair Obsidian is 9inches wide, that's over an inch of headroom. Why won't it fit? The 212+ is designed to fit even in midtower
 
I don't have the Corsair (yet). I have an old Thermaltake Xaser. The whole case is 8" wide, but it has a pair of fans on the inside of the side window. It might fit if those fans are gone. I'll probably work on it tomorrow. I'm working on my sister's computer right now. I hope it fits, but I really don't think it will. There is a place for the motherboard to sit on that is raised a bit. Well I guess either way...I win :D

Ohhhh I mis understood completely then. But in terms of your old Xaser, I think it will fit! It will be tight, but once those 2 fans are gone it should fit just right. Report back with how well it fits, I'd be most grateful.
My new Lian Li case coming in is only 8.66 inches, so if it doesn't fit yours, I don't see how half an inch is gonna really make a huge difference for me. So I'm not excited about that.
