I want to clone a 150GB drive to a 74GB drive (all content will fit). I thought Ghost was able to do it, but it doesn't (wasted my money there). Any good, cheap software available?
Thanks

I know WD Tools allows you to go from smaller to larger drive, but I'm not sure if the opposite is correct. There is another tool out there for drive cloning, but I forget the name of that off the top of my head. Sorry. :(

It's possible. I've successfully cloned a Windows partition to a smaller one in the past, from the command line with a Knoppix LiveCD. Gparted might be able to do this while offering a GUI.

If you are using Ghost properly, it should be able to do it. I've Ghosted many systems to drives of varying sizes. You could run ghost.exe off a bootable USB Flash Drive, or ghost32.exe from BartPE or UBCD4Win.

Yup. I think I see my problem. I was using the "Copy disk" function which will clone the drive to larger hard drive. Looks like I should be using the backup and restore functions. Trying it now. Will post again if I run into anymore problems.
Thanks.

Should work just fine, did for me :) Although I used a different program.

Getting this error in recovery

-Cannot copy data from the recovery point to the destination.
--Cannot read data from the recovery point.
---Error E0BB0004: Function Copy Volume argument Destination Volume is invalid.

The "Resize drive to fill unallocated space" option is not selectable.
Then I booted to recovery environmen where I get, "EC950006: The destination is not valid", when I choose the 74GB drive to restore to. In the Source recovery point detail, it says the drive size is 140GB. But the image size is only 55GB.
Looks like I'm doing something wrong.
I'm using Ghost 12
Thanks

Use acronis true image and your cloing issues will go away. IMO ghost is crap

Thanks. I gave up on Ghost and brought a copy of Acronis True Image. It works great. Cloned the drive in less than 1/2 hour (Ghost took much longer just to make an image of the drive).

Acronis only backs up the sectors that contain data, whereas Ghost (at least in the versions I have used) backs up the entire drive which takes for ever.....

Not true, when you do a clone ATI does a bit by bit image

This isn't true unless you specifically enable this option. By default, it does not.
