Cloning old OS to new machine

Not sure if this is the right forum - but since it's for a new machine, I suppose it's relevant.

Question: has anyone had success imaging their OS from their old machine onto their new rigs?

Specifically, I'm trying to use Acronis' universal restore function to get an old E8400 based system to load onto a new Haswell rig with an MSI H87M-G43 motherboard. Clearly a straight clone doesn't work as the HAL is borked and the system blue screens. Windows 7 repair fails as well. I know universal restore is looking for me to give it the right drivers - but it's not clear to me what drivers are causing the bluescreen. I'm presuming it's the chipset drivers that I can pull off the mobo DVD? Or there's also drivers there listed under "storage" Any thoughts?

Random thoughts:
1) The next time you think about breaking your rules and you decide to build a rig for someone you like - do yourself a favor and don't :) just tell em to get an ipad or a Dell.
2) I find it interesting that Windows 7 can install onto a new machine, but it can't repair it. Clearly it knows what drivers are required in the hardware abstraction layer - you'd think it could handle this =\
3) While I like re-installing my own OS, God I hate doing it for other people. Why are your files all over the damn place? What do you mean you "lost" your product keys. What stupid BS work program is this and what hoops do I have to jump through to make it work again?

Sigh... Feel my pain... Tell me it will all be ok... :)

Windows 7 shouldn't need anything special to switch between major hardware changes. I've used the same W7 install on multiple different rigs ranging from Intel to AMD.

What you are most likely having issues with is in the BIOS. I'd be willing to bet your drives in BIOS are set to AHCI when they need to be set to IDE. If they are already set to IDE, then switch it to AHCI mode.

What Skillz said. Unless the Windows 7 install was massively borked somehow, you shouldn't have any trouble moving Windows 7 between different setups. I've moved a Windows 7 install from an Intel to an AMD setup without having to remove any drivers (I was in a rush) and with little issue. That little issue happens to be what Skillz said about the BIOs.

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/314082 Try this. It's also included on Hiren's under "registry." What it does is enable all possible HDD controllers. This works almost every time (At least for me, so far!). Then you can just wait for it to re-detect the other hardware. I bet you are getting a 0x0000007B BSOD, right? Same as if you went from IDE compatibility mode to AHCI or vice versa.

Awesome stuff guys! This looks promising... I am getting the 7B BSOD - but the threads on the Acronis forums were leading me in a more complicated direction. I'll try the AHCI / IDE setting, and then the MS KB link.

Maybe I won't have to reinstall all his software after all! :)

I too switched from an i7 920 to a 2600k with all different parts (except the HDD) and it worked flawlessly. Not sure why its doing that.

Yup, it was totally set to AHCI and when I switched it to IDE, it booted right up. It's always the simplest things...

Well thanks for the help - it's working great now :)
