Is there a solution I can use to clean a Motherboard CPU Socket? I was thinking of using Radioshack's Electronic Cleaner.

Thanks

The actual socket...like where the CPU pins would go...I think there might be Ceramique in there.

i know that...it got on the socket when i dropped it after i took it out. i'm not a moron. i just want to know if it's possible to clean the socket.

Well...we use alcohol to loosen the stuff from the processors. However, it doesn't dissolve the stuff...soo if you got it stuck in the holes, then it sounds like you have a problem. :p

Toothpick? I haven't heard of anything that dissolves the stuff or makes it...unsticky.

hmm...i might as well give that electronic cleaner a shot then. thanks for the help. i guess trying a needle wouldnt hurt. i'm not actually sure that theres a problem with the socket, but it's fried two cpus and i got it back from rma and gigabyte said nothign was wrong with it.

it has to be something in there since i dropped a greasy cpu and it flipped over on it. its the only prob ive ever had with a mobo/cpu.

Toothpick isn't small enough...going to need a needle or something to get in there and not push it down.

Well it was the first "thin" thing that came to mind...was just about to go back and edit too....blah...

:p

tried the needle...seriously nothing comes out i can't even see anything in there. maybe im just paranoid. doesn't explain the cpu's dying. it's still under warranty...if it kills another cpu ill try to get a new one from gigabyte.

i was thinking that cleaner might dissolve it...wouldnt hurt to try i guess.

If it's silicon paste, there's hope... I'd use a small pipe cleaner, and dip it in mineral spirits.

However, if it were a paste containing aluminum or silver... I can't say you've got much of a chance of ever cleaning it out well.

Ceramique uses a high-density layered composite of five unique shapes of thermally conductive aluminum oxide, boron nitride and zinc oxide sub-micron particles to maximize particle-to-particle contact area and thermal transfer.

Ah crap the word aluminum is there.

Remind me to *never* ask you for directions. :p

i always use yahoo maps...ill cross my fingers and try to electronics cleaner anyway...then ill pop the 3400+ in there.

good luck, but honestly, is it worth it? If i were in your shoes i'd be saving for a new mobo, even a cheap POS, before i risked killing a CPU. It sucks that you got paste in there, but in all honesty there's no way you will ever clean it all the way out. Just cut your losses.

if both the cpu and mobo are still under warranty im gonna go for it...ill have to check with the guy i got the cpu from...but ya im already looking for another mobo.
