Dust is unlikely to hurt the drives as they're sealed and don't need much heat dissipation. Some of the other parts in the computer. Possibly.
 
I've got a minecraft server tucked away with my network equipment that has over 12,000 hours on it now with no cleaning. Haven't so much as touched the thing, much less opened the case. I'm trying to see what I can get away with. lol

As for the computer, yeah that's some heavy dust - looks like sawdust. Computer at a construction site perhaps?
 
Bought a GTX 480 on ebay clogged with two inches of dust inside the heatsink. Couldn't tell unless you opened it up. Temps were maxing about 105c. I told him .. "man this thing runs hot", knowing i'd cleaned all the dust out of it already. Seller told me I didn't have enough case air-flow. :rolleyes:

Lot's of unkempt personages in the home computer world. He got hours of game play... I got to clean his video card. Then he got mad when I nailed his spotless feedback with a negative.
 
Computers are clearly just air purifiers+space heater all rolled into one. Heats up a room and removes the dust who needs it to do anything else ammirte.
 
I have pics that will top everything. Just got to find a way to get them off a floppy since Win7 doesnt play well with old tech. :mad:

You'd think putting a case right on a carpet , the carpet would act as a natural filter. Nope!
There was more dust and fine dust than any pc i ve seen in a normal desktop :eek:

Yea. It looks newer. It has to be somewhere like that. If his house is that dirty, then GODDAMN! He needs to clean more than his computer!

I know what I'm going to do this weekend. I don't want to be 'that guy'.
 
You think that's bad? You should have seen my parent's Pentium 3 based rig that I finally replaced for them last Christmas (after they spent 4 years talking about buying a new machine). I'd bet King Tut's tomb didn't have dust buildup like that thing. I still have nightmares.
 
We need a "Most nasty PC's in the World" thread. I get a kick out seeing crap like this. I have a few pics of random machines I've worked on I could post as well.
 
When i was a teenager on summer break when WoW just came out, i sat at my computer for pretty much 16 hours a day chainsmoking next to my computer. Video card was overheating so i opened up the case and it was horrifying. I wish i took a picture of it back then, because it was just fucking bananas. All fans seized, completely. Nearly a quarter inch of tar-encrusted with dust. Even an industrial air compressor wouldn't remove any quantity of this gunk.

Since then i don't allow any smoker near my electronics, not even myself.
 
Woah.

I need to find the pic I took of a computer that came out of the fracture clinic when I worked at the hospital. The dust on all the openings was so bad it was acting as a filter and the inside was actually clean lol
 
these are some scary pics... now imagine dealing with labs full of these machines, just like this. we had an entire school district once, in some kind of dustbowl valley buying up hundreds of machines, happily taking advantage of our warranty in these piss poor conditions. chips and boards that would normally last decades were dying in a matter of months.

not sure how they survived without some epidemic of respiratory disease in there, the kids seemed to be fine but those poor pcs, man I felt so bad for them.
