Chrome Web Store

Google has announced that new Chrome Extension developers will be required to pay a one-time $5 registration fee. It is expected to significantly cut down on the number of malicious add-ons. Google has also set the minimum price in the Chrome store at $1.99, although developers can choose to give away their work for free. The store will take a 5% cut of the purchase price, and a $.30 transaction fee for each download and payment.

"[The signup fee] is intended to create better safeguards against fraudulent extensions in the gallery and limit the activity of malicious developer accounts," said product manager Gregor Hochmuth in a blog post.
The payment must be made using Google Checkout, which links payments to a credit card, thereby creating a paper trail to the developer -- or at least to the billing address and phone number recorded by the credit card company.

Seems like a sensible precaution. $5 is a pretty low barrier to entry, but its enough to put a little accountability in there.

So the developer actually has to pay Google to be allowed to give away their extension for free?

there is a chrome store ?

i'm serious, i never knew there were paid chrome extensions....

I would imagine you can create your own extension and host it on your site. Then, users that trust you would just tell chrome to accept from your site and install your extension no problem.

But, I haven't messed with Chrome extensions (consuming or developing) so I'm not sure.

It can work and be self-serving for Google at the same time, these aren't mutually exclusive things.

Its in the "Developer Preview" Stage atm. Which, in my guess, means that basically they are building up the number of apps so when they release it, it'll be more of a showcase

Couldn't they just use someone elses credit card if their into malware?

If they were serious and had access to stolen cards then they could bypass this easily. However if it's just some 15 year old kid having a go at hacking cause he thought it would be cool a simple check like this would be much harder to get around.

Very sensible implementation, though I don't know if I myself could ever spend money on an extension with how much is out today. I'd rather just write my own.

Yup, not that unusual anymore. Android Marketplace requires a one time $25 registration fee regardless of the number or cost of apps you want to sell/give away, and Apple's app store is a yearly $100 fee.
