Chiphell: AMD 3xx perf. leak

A better question is: If they benchmarked the card then why didn't they take any pictures of it?
They're leaked benches from an asian source, don't look too much into it.

That website has lot more credibility and accuracy than videocardz or wcftech

as far as AMD selling the 290 for cheaper than a 970, Nvidia just released the 970/980 this is to be expected, until Amd's next gen cards are released. Amd did the same thing to Nvidia when it launched the 7000 series cards when Nvidia was on the 580's.

There is one very important figure missing, which is revenue share. AMD's discrete market share numbers for the GPU segment already look very bad compared to Nvidia. In terms of revenue share it is even worse as Nvidia's ASPs are way higher than AMDs. The point that Nvidia was able to sell a rather cheap to produce GTX680 and now GTX 970 is really bad for AMD. Nvidia's way better brand recognition allows them to charge more with in fact beeing able to produce better or equal products cheaper. I can tell you that Q4 will very likely be a bloodbath for AMD. The only thing on their side that will be on a normal level is probably consoles. CPUs and discrete GPUs will again bleed a lot while Q4 beeing always the best quater for the industry. I smell market share losses and probably again red numbers.

I will purchase an AMD card over an Nvidia card given the same price and simliar performance. It has nothing to do with fanboyism as some would claim. I prefer AMD because they introduce OPEN standards instead of proprietary property(Gsync, Cuda, Physx, adaptive Vsync.....)

Everyone has their own preference. Some will have good reasons, others will spread doom and gloom as if the world is ending if you go with another option.

I don't mind who pushes or introduces what. The only thing that is of interest for me is if the product i am going to buy or bought is good and what kind of support can i expect from the IHV going forward. Regarding the last question i think Nvidia has the better answers. Open standards are good but in some cases they develop way too slow. I don't care whether the stuff Nvidia pushes forward benefits AMD users. I am only interested in that they benefit myself and the product i bought not matter how that is achieved.

...In most market segments it takes naivety or strong brand preference to choose nVidia over AMD...

Eh. I sold my 290 and bought a 980 because I couldn't deal with the driver issues anymore. Too much work and compromise. Nothing naive or fanboy about it.

Well I can tell you now, there have been nothing but drivers problems with the 970/980 drivers.

Just as bad as AMD drivers if you ask me.

P.S. lets not bring up the bios problems with 970/980 in SLI. Only way to fix it is with a bios flash.

The only issue I've had is PCSS shadow issues in FC4, which was easily worked around until fixed. It was nothing like AMD though. Don't get me wrong, I loved the performance of the 290 and I had the XFX double d, so it was quiet. But how many beta drivers vs whql drivers did AMD release in the year I had it? And beta drivers were BETA drivers. Required DDU uninstall of the driver in safe mode every time... requiring rollback in some instances which required another DDU/safe mode uninstall. Ugh. I don't know if that was everyone's experience, but it was mine

Power consumption was also a factor for me. If I want to SLI, I need less PSU than xfire for the 290.

Not saying that AMD sucks or that I'll never buy another AMD card. But in the case of the 290 vs the 980 I have now... the 980 is leaps and bounds above the 290 with regard to every day usability and experience.

(the 980 is leaps and bounds above the 290 with regard to every day usability and experience)

You need to understand that the 290x was built to take on Titan /780GTX.. Nvidia refreshed the 780GTX to Ti and AMD didn't notting because drivers was still showing gains .. Nvidia released a whole new card with the 980GTX so that is 2 new cards Nvidia made to stop the 290X sales and now we get to see the full Hawaii refresh in the 380X which looks like it can give the 980GTX all it can handle and then some .

390/390X is AMD's trump card as there will be no Titan sucker punch this time..

:D
390/390X is AMD's trump card as there will be no Titan sucker punch this time..
Considering that the 980 has such a low TDP for the performance it gives, do you really think it is out of the question for a 200-250w TDP card to not give significantly more performance?

COD, worthless port for PC.

ACU, Worthless port for PC.

DAI: Ok you got me 1 game

P.S. Added game: FC4: Worthless buggy POS.

The new COD is actually a great port.I play it 1440p with 2x super sample with no problems.

FC4 and Unity on other hand....

I play FC4 maxed out without issue on my 980... 80fps avg at 1600x900. I realize it's not 1440p, but it plays well for that res without any technical issues. (except for PCSS shadow annoyances)

1600x900 is not even 40% of the pixels of 2560x1440.

you say they're worthless ports, and i certainly agree the proper amount of TLC is not given to PC ports at all.. but that's what we get. ports. there are always exceptions of course, but his point is valid.

You can add Metro Last Light to that list. Running a 4670K @ 4GHZ. Don't think it takes advantage of an i7; going from a stock AMD 965 to my 4670K @ 4GHZ only increased frame rates by 2 anyways. Decent looking game but poorly optimized given the small maps.

Also add Crysis 3. Tomb Raider averaged at 57 for me. ArmA 3 doesn't take advantage of your CPU and going from the 670 PE/OC to 970 4 Gaming gained me 2-3 frame rates. But still around 33 when there are 7 burning vehicles on screen.

Plenty of games where a 970 can't get a steady 60 frame rates.

Sorry. Sometimes, when I'm not talking to my daughter, I forget that others still need a great deal of assistance in understand the things grown ups say.

Let's try again: While I understand that it's a lower resolution and cannot compare in terms of the raw processing power needed to perform its function, the game runs without the technical issues that have plagued other titles (e.g. Assassin's Creed: Unity).

One is a limitation of the card's power and memory (resolution), the other is a limitation created by the program's poor optimization.

We were talking about maxing out games at 1080p AND getting 60FPS or above. 1600x900 is not relevant...........

The discussion also made reference to poorly optimized PC ports, which, in my experience, FC4 isn't, whereas Unity probably is.

If you overclocked the 980 then your in that 200-250w area which I would think should be close to what the AMD card has shown in that chart at 197 watt as it has to gain ground to match the benchmarks.. so i guess it depends on if that is the 380X and how much overclock headroom is left on it as it also is well below 250 watt. 380X may use alittle power but it's also faster at the same time.

In most market segments it takes naivety or strong brand preference to choose nVidia over AMD. Across the board if you spend the same money you will get superior performance from AMD.

This is pretty much exactly what i said, simply worded differently. If there is a "strong brand preference" for nvidia (and there is), I think part of the explanation is that AMD has been a trainwreck of a mismanaged company for so long that their "brand" is not flying high. And you even admit that they have to sell the same performance* at a cheaper price than their competition because of this fact, which is exactly the end point I reached.

So what are you complaining about?

(*I'll assume we're talking about real frames. Not like a couple years back when their drivers were so bad that their cards were spitting out half-frames, quarter-frames, black frames, blank frames, etc., and still being counted as FPS.)

This^^^

They both have issues and always will. There are so many different combinations of hardware and interactions with software, plus incompetence from users there are always going to be issues. That's the nature of the PC.

Considering that the 980 has such a low TDP for the performance it gives, do you really think it is out of the question for a 200-250w TDP card to not give significantly more performance?

The problem (one problem?) is chip size on 28nm. Recent rumors point to further process delays.

According to the [H] test, getting the 980 to 1,516MHz core and 8GHz RAM adds 54w over stock, so assuming that the 312w total system load was getting the GPU to 100% TDP of 165w, then it was consuming 219w overclocked. We should probably look back a bit at the GTX 680 and the GTX Titan, which we are possibly going to see a repeat performance of. ;)

The 680 had 1,536 CUDA cores, ran around 1,100MHz in-game, and used ~329w at load (whole system). The GTX Titan had 2,688 CUDA cores, ran around 950MHz in games, and used ~379w at load, which is just about perfect, since the GTX 680 had a 195w TDP and the Titan had a 250w TDP. The Titan offered quite a bit more performance even with the gimped clock speed. Overclocking it to 1180MHz+ bumped power up to ~429w but obviously with a noticeable speed boost. :)

All in all, I would not put money on this being the R9 380X (or the 370X, or the 360X like I know someone will offer up here shortly :D), but if the numbers are indeed correct and the card is not priced over $500, then we'll probably see a price drop from Nvidia on the 980 and 970 and the consumers will win :)

Sorry. Sometimes, when I'm not talking to my daughter, I forget that others still need a great deal of assistance in understand the things grown ups say

I'd rather have naivety than condescension. I hate to tell you but you aren't superior to any other poster here. Everyone has opinions, and you know what they say about opinions.

Well, if you are still hung up on past multi GPU issues, then current ones should be a real priority?

I won't post the 970 SLI results as they are basically the same.

Maybe we can start a crusade about nVidia's dropped frames like we had with AMD's? Nah! AMD's marketing isn't that aggressive.

I've had my 290X since launch and have never done this. AMD has said time and time again that installing over old drivers is fine. I think a lot of people end up having driver issues because they're overzealous wiping their systems before a new driver.

This proves another point. Maxwell drivers havent been top notch at all. They are having just as many issues as AMD now.

DSR+Gsync+SLI did not work. MFAA still does not work with SLI, and MFAA only works on certain games. SLI voltage issues, numerous game issues, took them 2-3 weeks for get proper SLI drivers for Shadows or Mordor. etc etc.

I for one always called out AMD when they had driver issues, from the 5870 all the way to the 7990 card. Skyrim was a mess for so fucking long i got pissed and switched camps.

But Nvidia is now in the same league as AMD with drivers. Both camps suck ass to me.

Well to be fair with the issue of frametime, it's worth pointing out that prior to Cat 13.8's release in July last year, AMD didn't even bother with frame pacing (the official reason being not wanting to introduce input lag), and thus CrossFire was much more prone to microstuttering than SLI, and sticking with team green for multi-GPU setups actually did make sense up until then.

However with AMD rolling out phase 2 of frame pacing fix and Maxwell drivers being unbelievably shitty, at present time there's no compelling reason for buying nVidia unless you like the feature sets or care about efficiency/heat. Noise and heat with 290(X) isn't a concern so long as you don't get the epic fail reference blower, but 600W of heat for a XFire setup is still no joke.

I wouldnt say no compelling reason to go Nvidia. I for one LOVE DSR on some of my games. It really makes them enjoyable. I use DSR all the time while playing the current WOW expansion.

Both companies have issues, but both companies have benefits and special features. To me right now the best thing you can do is wait until the 380x is released in Q1 2015

Yeah that's why I mentioned feature sets. DSR is one of the features (however broken it might be :p). And yes DSR and half the heat output of 290(X) is what makes me happy about Maxwell. But dat driver and SLI voltage, UGH.

I agree, the sooner 380X/390X hits the scene the better off we all will be.

Yea if the the leaks really are the 380x, i cannot wait to see what a 390x would be. Specially with 20nm and HBM memory.

You see one thing you do seem to care about that I don't is that the company makes a lot of money off of me. I'll take the better value. I will also avoid anything that tries to segment the market for the benefit of the vendor.

The GTX 970 is already the better value as Nvidia's support in general is better. And of course i do care about the company making money. There is nothing worse than a company that can be seen as a complete failure business wise. Companies that do not make money will at some point in time run out of money and of course will have less R&D to spend. If i buy a product i want to be sure that the product gets the support i expect. If a company is already bleeding this is highly questionable.

The old faithful drivers are better. Well you are in the minority. Most people find the drivers on par with both companies.

Definately not. As i said above. Nvidia's support is way better than AMD's. AMD in general is trying to cover certain competetive disadvantages with lower pricing. If they would not price their products aggressivly while loosing money do you think people would currently care much about their products? I have serious doubts. In the end it would be interesting to see how successful AMD is if no one is wasting money on them from an investment point of view anymore.

Wow you are great at spinning things around? Really AMD has competetive disadvantages? Explain that one to us.

And how is Nvidia support better then AMD? Maybe 10 years ago sure....But Nvidia was caught with bad GPU's for laptops that they even got sued and had to settle. Or the bad coil whine issue with the 970 GTX series.

You cant spread lies about company just because you think thats how it is when it isnt. Both companies are bad.

Lets not mention the FX5800 failure. Or the 480 GTX blowing circuit breakers (I had 3 of them in SLI I should know). Or wood screws on a video card that the CEO was showing people as new tech.

Ive had bad cards and bad drivers from both companies.

No fanboy here.

One thing that drives my buying decision is increases in memory bandwidth That being said, it looks like AMD will get my money with their new card and I want two of them.

I've had FPS issues all the time with amd cards especially in mmo's like Tera.

This. Don't forget the low utilization load problem that is causing crashes on the 970s. This is still a major issue. Hell I bet people that aren't aware of it are wondering why their games are crashing all the time. I had to flash to a modded VBIOS to fix this issue. I also had to flash my friens SLI 970s to fix this issue.

The 900 series, especially the sli problems, utilization crashes and coil whine have been almost a disaster. I am still waiting for an official SLI fix so I can order another G1.

I admit I never had as many issues, driver or hardware, with my 7950s or my 7970.

Both camps need to get their shit together.

People introduce that issue by overclocking, they also have the tools to fix the issue. If you want any company to spoon feed you high overclocks without tweaks, you are going to be disappointed.
