Chiphell: AMD 3xx perf. leak

The 980 just came out. Something 40% faster today would be mighty impressive. I mean, bring it on, but I'd be surprised.

Nvidia releases a product 15% faster:
"OMG TAKE MY MONEYS, I'll take 5!"

AMD releases a product 15% faster:
"LOLOLOLOLAMDSUXLLOLOLOL!!!1"

If you're referring to the 970 don't forget the pricing dropped the value of the cards on the market by 40% in a day. It was good for both AMD and nVidia users.

I still don't understand this insane brand loyalty to companies that just want as much of your money as possible. :D

Don't forget that if these numbers are legit that you are not going to get the current ~$300 pricing that the 290X is going for. This card will be priced appropriately for the performance, so it'll be in the $500-600 range.

I saw this before it was posted here. I didn't bother posting it here.

No need to get the rumor mill going.

That being said we could very well see a mid December launch. Say December 15th or so. Just a guess would match when Amd announced Cayman (6950/6970). Companies love anniversaries of things.

It's the same shit over and over and over and over and over again:

A releases GPU 1
B releases GPU 1' that beats it
A releases GPU 2 that beats GPU 1' from B
B releases GPU 2' that matches or beats GPU 2 from A
A releases GPU 3 with higher clocks to beat GPU 2' and maybe toss in more vram
B slashes prices on GPU 2' to beat GPU 3 and reclaim price/perf crown
A announces new architecture/process shrink, and round and round and round and round and round we go again

And then throw in the obligatory fanboi flame wars at each and every step of the cycle

No earliest launch would be sometime in February.
We, well some of us, would have much better info on the specs and AIBs would have cards in hand and boxes ready to go.

I was thinking February too. I am really hoping they can somehow get it out in January.

Shout " captain jack where are you ? " :D
Let's hope we see you before Xmas .

Looks good, for a second there I was worried I would have to give money to Nvidia.
8 years clean.

it's more like amd came second. how much fanfare is there for second place? not much.

nvidia releases the 900 series with two cards that are faster than pretty much everything while using significantly less power than ever before, with the 970 priced extremely competitively. amd is forced to slash their prices. now, we see amd doing the same thing nvidia already did.

just kidding LOLOLOLOLAMDSUXLLOLOLOL!!!1

^^ I see a Nvidia in you ^^ lol
AMD was founded on: 1969 , ATI was founded on: 1985 and
Nvidia was founded: 1993 .
So who came second ?

Technically AMD only acquired ATI in 2006, so AMD's ATI is technically after nVidia :p

Wouldn't there normally be a lot more detailed leaks by now if it were stocking up for a Dec 15 launch? Seems a bit too soon.

I just bought a 290 for cheap, but this stuff gets me excited. Hoping for some large jumps to warrant a good crossfire setup.

I don't get the fan boy mentality at all.
Personally I've got a GTX 770 but would have no problems switching to AMD.

We should only be thankful to AMD for the competition in the GPU market.

The fan boy stuff starts when they read too many reviews and buy into the advertiser's hyperbole. Then after two maybe three purchases of said company, they are set.

Like Chevy or Ford trucks, for some guys, you would think the way they act that the product has a vagina.

Except men don't get that attached to any one vagina....

Seriously though, the two companies aren't perfect substitutes. There are valid reasons for someone to stick with one company. There's actually a fair difference between the nVidia and AMD eco-systems.

This better be the 380x and release at $300, only way I would consider this over the GTX970. It would put some nice pressure on nVidia and normalize the GPU market, which went price-bonkers when AMD Released the Radeon 7970 at $550. Before then, the last time we had a price skyrocket was when nVidia released the GTX260 and GTX280 at $450 and $600 respectively, and AMD corrected the market by releasing the Radeon 4870(which beat the GTX260 and at times performed close to the GTX280) for $300 and corrected prices for a couple years.

The only way you would consider the 380X is if it's $30 cheaper and 36% faster than the 970, while also being about 15% more power efficient?
Even if that happens the next excuse you'll make is, "Yeah but I can't live without PhysX".

It's 16% faster than the 980 and you want it for $300.
This card could release at $400+ and it would annihilate Nvidia.

That was my mindset when I picked the Radeon 4870($300) over the GTX260($450) and GTX280($600) years ago. And again when I picked the GTX670($350) over the Radeon 7970($500) for my primary machine. Perhaps a history lesson is in order for our younger less experienced members?

Fair enough.

Don't be condescending; I own a 4870.

I was thinking the same thing. But that is what it takes nv fanboys to change. 36% faster, $30 cheaper and 16% more efficient.

I would rather pay $30 more for something 36% slower so I can have physx, game works, g sync and better drivers. Win, win, win, win! Give me more ubisoft games...

Really? Physx sucks, GW sucks, G sync don't really make sense if you already have a 144hz monitor. btw freesync monitors are coming and are cheaper.

I hate fanboys...

I currently own, 970SLI and Titan Z. but i would buy AMD if their card perform better.

Please don't assume I was being condescending, just as I don't think you assume me of being a fanboy with your comment:

Some people actually forget that the $300 Radeon 4870 was able to stand toe to toe with the GTX280 in some rare situations, while costing half as much. Others forget that the Radeon 5850 (a card that overall embarrassed the $350 GTX470) launched at only $260.

So, there is history(especially with AMD) that a card +/- $100 less than it's competition can handsomely outperform it. So with that in mind, it's not out of the question that AMD would release a $300 GTX980 killer. It's been done before, it just seems that we have a lot of new enthusiasts(anecdotaly a bunch of my friends switched to PC gaming over console in the last few years) or people seem to forget the past. Hell, when launched the $330 GTX970 blew past the then $400 Radeon R9-290 and went toe-to-toe with the $550 Radeon R9-290x, that was only a few months ago, and apparently some have already forgot.

They already do perform better.
any midrange card can handle 1920 resolutions and I cant understand why anyone buy Nvidia when they are at best a sidegrade to amd 290x.
the buyer remorse might be becoming a huge deal soon for those buying 970 and such cards.

There is one kind: those who live in places where AMD's price cuts is not reflected in their market, at all.

290x are still selling for 980's prices here, and 295x are still selling for $1600, given the sheer price difference, I really couldn't justify AMD cards.

That being said, had I been living in the US, I would definitely be feeling buyer's remorse, 295x at that price is too painful to look at after getting 2 970's....

Just because something happened 5 years ago doesn't mean you should expect it to happen again. AMD released fast CPU's 10 years ago, it doesn't mean we should be on the edge of our seats that their next "FX-10,000" will destroy an i7. The pricing gap introduced by the 4870 vs 280 was due to AMD's own failure in previous generations. The 2000 and 3000 series sucked. Nvidia owned the market for years with the 8000 series. Compared to today the 290 and 290X are far more competitive to the GTX 900's.

It would be nice if AMD could replicate the 5870. It might be possible since we're approaching another generational leap. Considering how stale the 280/285 was at the time, and the GTX 980 is quite the opposite, I wouldn't say those kind of expectations are even on the table.

You're setting yourself up for disappointment. And, maybe not you, but most people will use that sense of disappointment to continue buying Nvidia.
And the vets of this forum should be very familiar with that concept already:

Nvidia releases a product 15% faster:
"OMG TAKE MY MONEYS, I'll take 5!"

AMD releases a product 15% faster:
"LOLOLOLOLAMDSUXLLOLOLOL!!!1"

lol better drivers. I have had about 500% more issues with nvidia drivers on my 780 then I have had with any amd/ati card.

5 Years? Try 2 months, the $330 GTX970 outperformed the $400 R9-290 and $550 R9-290x when it came out, Granted those two came out a year ago, but prices stagnated for the longest time till nVidia came in and helped correct prices on the market with the GTX970. That being said, I'd still consider the R9-380x at $350 over a $330 GTX970 with the performance seen in these benchmarks.

Well when you use 1 year old MSRP's then yes it looks rough.
The 290X was a $450 or less card since the summer. I think Nvidia bases their pricing models on actual market values rather than what AMD dictates at time of launch. The 290 hit $300 during the summer as well.

"Prices stagnated"? All of the R9 series has been in free-fall since April.
Nobody paid $550 for a 290X since before the mining craze.

$100 gap for same-tier performance between generations is nothing shocking.
290 launched at $400 while the 780 was $500.

AMD hasn't obsoleted Nvidia the way you're describing since the 5870 and now we're comparing two totally different scenarios. The GTX 285 at the time was in a much worse position than the 980 is now.

If these vendors want to sell more high-end cards what they should do is call up these game development shops and bribe them to start making PC games again.

When all you have to work with are poorly-ported console games and indie games, the number of people willing to drop $400 on a GPU scales down dramatically.

Where the hell's my L4D3?

Yeah because who wants more features and reliability out of their card? FPS is all that matters because I only watch a meter while I play games.

There is a reason that NVIDIA outsells AMD every single year. They make a much better product. Until AMD steps up and offers a more polished feature set and doesn't sacrifice everything just to try and compete on frames, they are going to continue to struggle.

In terms of quantifying high-end share gains and magnitude, our supply-chain conversations indicate that Nvidia’s GeForce GTX 980/970 has comprised over 80% of high-end card shipments to channel partners since mid-September.
