Ya know, it is borderline uncomfortable to watch Google do back-flips to please China. The Chinese government has now stepped in and disabled some of Google’s search functions because they might bring up porn images. Lame.

The Chinese government disabled some search functions on the Chinese-language Web site of Google on Friday, saying the site was linking too often to pornographic and vulgar content.

Imagine if our government tried pulling a stunt like that, Google would be lawyered up in a heartbeat and they’d scream about free speech / human rights violations. I guess I’m just pissed because it is so hypocritical.

i don't see anything hypocritical about it. They are just doing what the country allows them to do. They abide by the laws of China for their services and abide the laws here.

Like any business, you have to conform to the laws of the country you do business in.

"Don't be Evil" my ass, Google like every other fucking company out there does whatever it takes to make more money.

Human rights violation? who cares as long as they can continue to make money off the oppressed Chinese people and their government

No one stands up for anything they believe in anymore.

I think porn is a-ok.. set your search to pansy if you can't handle it.

I agree with Steve, but it's all about making money now.. *Sigh*

"If your not rich life isn't as good as it could be." Or something like that.

Can't say I agree with that.

For Google, it's either they do this or they don't have a presence in China. Obviously they would be pissed if that happened here, and to be honest they are probably very pissed that it's happening in China too. But they have to abide by the country's laws - either that, or don't have a presence in China at all, which accounts for 25% of all web surfers.

In short, it's really not a surprise for a company to be following the laws of the country they are in.

While I can agree with that sentiment... It's either that or they're banned from an entire countries audience. Seriously, do you think that would help anyone?

Amazing. Is it true that Yahoo turned over information to China about some innocent person? What happened to that guy? Thanks.

Shi Tao was sentenced to 10 years in jail in 2005 following Yahoo's release of the information.

Yahoo ratted out 3 other guys - all jailed.

Do not think for a moment that your ISP would not turn you in if faced with a search warrant from the FBI because you made a threat to a high ranking politician or advocated the overthrow of the goverment and someone decided you might be a risk. Until recently the good ole USA had its skeletons in the closet too.
Just one example - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/COINTELPRO

Porn seems to be quite forbidden in China, as almost the whole internet by blocking and censuring sites. Google can't do a thing if the Chinese government wants actually that.

next comes the forced abortions google...

wait those days are over right, just need to be censored so they are forgotton.

Practice for when called upon to do backflips to please other regimes. (Who's on the White House staff?)

Just so.

hmmm... FBI for selling prostitutes online vs.... Chinese government upset for you trying to publicize a democratic devent that was brutally squashed.... and pretend it never happened. or if you practice christianity, buddhism etc... wtf people.

apples and oranges.

also if the fbi "searched our computers" for porn... every [H} member but like 4 would be arrested.

It's not about porn. It's about control. China is setting precedents for future actions which, I expect, will grow increasingly draconian... and Google will comply every step of the way, so long as there is money to be made. Google will keep at it until China finally comes up with their own search engine and bans Google completely.

People always talk a good game when it comes to condemning China's human rights record, but when the boycotting of goods and services comes up, or when people stop to realize exactly how much of the US is owned by China, we realize how utterly pointless it actually is.

There is nothing that China can do to it's populace that will prevent us from doing business with them.

Hey, don't worry Steve. While we used to defend Gay people back in my country. Look what happened to Miss California. Who said you can think or say whatever you think or want to nowadays anymore?

I'm ashamed to call myself Chinese.

Don't be. The only reason to be ashamed would be if you called yourself a Comunist!!! The Chinese government is not the first and it wouldn't be the last.

Nazis
Soviets
Turks
Iranians
Cambodians
Indians
Chinese

All of these powers violated and continue to violate humans right. You can make a synthesis and notice that all of them are/were Totalitarian Regimes.

And who's to blame?

I mean, after the cold War some Americans thought that was it. No other power would challenge the U.S. Look at where are we now. We're China's Mistreated whore.I think the Cold War should had continued. At least, it kept the morons like Carter at bay.
That's why I always ask what is the real value of things?

Short sight in the hunt for easy cash and irresponsibility for the easy and quick cash. Along with the increased control has lead to this. The people that made and allowed this had no sense of self preservation if you ask me. If you ask me where I was I'll tell you. I was escaping a place similar to China. And now when I thought I finally had reached safe land I bump into this.
The evil genius of the latest Chinese Government (Who is actually lead by a former enemy of Mao) is that they consolidated and successfully implemented the idea that you can have economical freedom without political/social freedom. Something all other totalitarian regimes are terrified of since the common sense idea indicates this would lead the the loss of Power by the State.

P.S. Which boards (Since I know that all chips except for Intel and Via are made in China) are assembled in the U.S.?
I know that XFX and EVGA are American companies but where do they construct their products?

Venezuelans are now crying after we advised them to avoid Hugo Chavez and they irresponsibly and arrogantly argued that they were not like the Cubans. They had no idea of what they were talking about. Now they are impaled for a looooong long time with a totalitarian system that is strangling them little by little into Comunism. If what you say, bucket, is true: that nothing will prevent us from doing business. (More like selling our asses to the Chinese Communist State). What do you think it will happen? I mean Venezuela freed most of South America and also Helped with the Independence War here in the U.S.

Sigh...I wish more people had a better understanding of economics. No country "owns" another country. When we think of "debt," in the United States, we think of credit cards and mortgages - you borrow money, and you later have to pay it back. Across international lines, it doesn't work that way. The relationship between the US and China is something like this:

US: "Haha, China is so stupid. They keep sending us all the manufactured goods we need in exchange for these worthless pieces of paper we call "bonds". Do they not realize we couldn't pay these back if we wanted to? Haha."

China: "Haha. The US is so stupid. In exchange for our cheap labor, they're signing away economic control of their country! Look at all these bonds! We're never going to cash them, but the US doesn't know that. Haha."

Both the US and China think they're getting a killer deal, when they're really just passing paper back and forth. As that paper moves, however, goods get made and work gets done. Result:

US workers get the skilled research and service jobs we prefer, rather than the factory jobs we look down on. Americans' love of material goods is satisfied; look at how many things you own that were made in China.

The huge yet mostly unskilled Chinese labor force gets work they are able to do. The Chinese government gets the resources they need to significantly improve their country; although political oppression is still there, look at how much Chinese economic freedom has improved recently.

Yes, the US and China are locked in a trade circle for generations to come. But that's okay; the circle has proved beneficial to both countries.

Whoever decided to call it the "national debt" made a mistake; people think it works like credit card debt and get scared. We really should call that number the "US international trade flow rate buffer," because that's all it is: a store of extra paper to keep the flow of goods running optimally.

as long as they don't dump the bonds lol. and if they stop buying our bonds we are screwed... we won't be able to go further in debt if they don't buy the bonds.

if the government started printing money we would see record inflation such as in germany and italy during and after ww2 due to printing money with no care.

But they won't stop buying the bonds. Look what buying our bonds has done for China in the past 20 years...you can practically watch China grow into a developed country in real-time. I see no reason why they would want that to stop. Unless they once again decided economic growth was too politically risky, but that's another whole issue...

China would never "dump" the bonds as they know that would destroy their own economy as well as ours. It is like mutually assured destruction; both countries can destroy one another, but neither will do so, as it would destroy itself in the process. Remember how the Cold War motivated space exploration? The modern "bond war" is doing the same thing for civilian markets.

In his book, The Lexus and the Olive Tree, Thomas L. Friedman once said, "the United States can destroy you by dropping bombs and the Supermarkets can destroy you by downgrading your bonds." He is right; the bonds of today are just like the bombs of the Cold War.

For one final analogy: today's economy is like a nuclear power plant. Very unpredictable and dangerous, but with all the safeguards and controls in place, it should be okay. Should be. The last disturbance (the housing-auto-credit-oil-crash-crunch-shortage) was pretty scary, IMO; we came uneasily close to a meltdown and had to use some last resort measures. Some may say, therefore, that the global economy is too dangerous. Debating this issue, however, is rather pointless, as we couldn't stop the machine if we wanted to; it has too much momentum by now. It's either going to crash or keep working. The best we can do is try to reset the safeguards in time for the next disturbance.

they need our bonds to continue to stabalize their currency which is under inflated... its a shite mess. nobody is holding a gun to saudia arabia and china's throats though to buy more bonds.

they might not dump our bonds but they might not buy more. this is a global economy. how do you think they trade with the other 150+ countries of the world, when they primarily only buy our bonds?

we are not their biggest market, the globe is. i think thats why they were feeling more like "hey we don't need america's bonds" and if they "lose a little business so what" since we as americans don't ever do what is wise...

WE CANNOT BOYCOTT AS A COUNTRY CHINA FOR HUMAN RIGHTS VIOLATIONS MUCH LESS IF THEY STOPPED BUYING OUR BONDS.
