Hey guys,

I've been lurking around here because I'm going to build an SFF psu this summer for when I go off to college. I got pissed today because in my back up PC my ultra x-connect PSU seemingly bit the dust :( (Good thing I had a back up!). Well, I went to newegg and was just browsing through their PSUs. I figured I'd check what kind of micro atx psu's they had, and only one of them came up with the dual 12v rail. It was this one http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16817104904 This seems like a great deal for those of us who don't like paying out their ass for a psu. I was previously looking at the enermax liberty, but found out it only had a one year warranty (for $80+ screw that). Fortron source has a good rep, and just as long as you aren't doing sli this should be adequate power for an SFF system. What do you guys think?

wow, that looks pretty nice. I don't know of any reviews on that but it does seem that newegg reviewers like it.

300watts might be a little on the low side as well. Not that your computer will use 300 watts but if you go SLi, one of your rails might handle the load :)
 
The one guy was running a 7800gt, dvd burner, hdd etc on this so it should be fine for anything sff besides SLI, and to me the sli cost/benefit ratio isn't there.
 
i'm not quite sure on what kind of SFF you're planning on building but if you were looking a Liberty then more than likely you're going the non-shuttle route. One of the reviewers comments that the size is "125mm wide by 63mm high" which is substantially smaller than a standard ATX psu. So yeah, its smaller but it wont fit a qpack (if thats what you're planning to switch over to) unless a bracket is made.
 
I don't know I'll have to look into that, I'm going to build a qpack or the new aerocool one if it comes out in time. Making a bracket would be easy. Are you sure this would not directly fit into the qpack?
 
It's narrower than standard ATX PSU's so you would have to make a bracket. A quick trip to haome depot for a $2 piece of sheetmetal, a quick stencil, and a little cutting is all that would be required. It would allow you to use any optical drive you want if that is a concern for you. Seems like a good budget alternative.
 
A bracket would be really easy to make, and I think it would be worth it for this psu. I can use the optical drive I want to. It's also got dual 12v rails, enough power, small size, basically everthing we SFFers are looking for. This is defiantely a strong possibility hmmm, decisions decisions. I'm still gonna wait till summer to build it tho...
 
this is something that I'm looking for to replace the stock qpack psu also.

question is would dual 12v rail be better than 1 rail with 20a capacity?

enermax makes a micro atx psu with higher capacity on 3.3V and 5V rail but has only a single 12V rail with 20a
 
i did some more research on this topic.

Seasonic makes a micro ATX super versatile psu that includes a "magic bracket" to adapt to ATX form factor mounts

the current capacity seems pretty decent also
 
seasonic has a ss-300sfd model that has dual 12v rails but doesn't say it includes the magic bracket....
 
did more research.

they sell this model (ss-300sfd) in japan with the magic bracket but under the brand Owltech
 
IMO, i wouldnt buy it because it only has 8 amps on the 12v. Sure, depends on your components, but I think having a good strong power supply is a must.

edit: second 12v has 14.5 amps.

I have the 450w athena power PSU with this stuff:
Asus A8N-CSM
X2 4400+
2gb OCZ
EVGA 7800gt
2x DM10 300gb

Runs it fine and i could probably do SLI with the 7800gt

how much gaming do you do on this setup?

this athena psu has a weak 12V capacity. i was under the impression that you'll need a high 12V to run both a high end cpu and a high end gpu together at full load....
 
I just received this PSU in the mail, going to have to get a bracket made, but, i will install this guy, power up my machine and let you guys know how it works

the specs it'll be powering are:

ASUS mATX mobo
P4 socket775 2.8 w/HT
X800GTO made by sapphire
512 ram (busted my matching stick, it's RMA'ing right now)
a dvd/cdrw
and an hdd, some cathodes, other smaller stuff

hopefully it will be well worth the $40
 
I actually do tons of gaming on my setup. BF2, NFS MW, UT2004, and lots of other games. I remember it restarting twice but that was a long time ago. I think you are underestimating the power of this supply. It is a quality PSU with dual 80mm.

EDIT: I'm talking about the 450w Athena Power from newegg

well that's good,

i bought the seasonic ss-300sfd from Case-mods.com, it is a bit more expensive than the Fortron one at newegg and the current ratings are very similar (also dual 12V)

only thing is that the ss-300sfd uses an 80x25mm fan instead of 80x15mm (I assumed based on the form factor of the fortron). I guessed the 80x25mm fan will be quieter than the fortron one.

i didn't really care about the $20 difference in price because these A-pfc's are suppose to pay itself back in electric bill anyway.

I hope you aren't talking about the same PSU i am, cause the fortron only has one fan in it
