Cheap upgrade from 805d ?

Browsing some auction sites recently i noticed 805d keeps quite good prices so I could sell it for some nice cash and get 631 (or other cedar mill with HT) for like 10 $ or get 915d for like 30-40$ do you think it's worth spending cash?

Mobo will be gigabyte 945-s3 as i'm going away from asrock to something core2 ready and want something with voltage regulation (not hard enough for volt modding :) )
 
No i meant 945 ;)
It has same features with bit less sata ports , no raid and fsb somewhere around 300-330 which will be fine as i'm going to e4300 or 4400 as my next cpu.
And costs 90$ instead of 120.

I strongly suggest you find 30$ somewhere and get the 965 version or you will regret it later ;).
 
Sell something and get a real machine. Do not waste money on 915Ds or 945 chipset mobos. It's pointless. Hardware does not appreciate, it only depreciates. Buying interim upgrades is pointless unless you found something that your 805D is incapable of.

Its worth spending an extra $20 for the 965 S3.

If you bought a 631 you'd downgrade from dual core to single core with HT. Though those CedarMills overclock like banshees, I think it would still be a bad choice.

And buying a Pentium D 915 over your current 805 would only give you a slight upgrade. So once again don't waste your money here. (maybe a slightly higher OC)

Save up for a Core 2 4300 & 965 motherboard. Trust me it will be well worth it.
 
Well I would get a 965. The gigabyte S3 is a solid choice and hang on to the 805. Get a good heatsink and this way you be ready when the Core 2 prices drop in late april.

Hmm will slow 533 memory that goes max to 750 block overcloking on it ?
 
I upgraded from a Pentium D 805 @ 3.6ghz to a E6300 @ 3.0 ghz. It's the best upgrade for $50 I've ever done few months back. I already had a Asus p5b. No more choking because Core2Duo can handle anything netburst couldn't.

I jumped hefty 30 fps in the game I play most (battlefield 2). Not to mention little itty gritty stuff for like archiving, encoding, lower electric bills, less heat.

No problem as long as the BIOS allow for a multiplier for RAM. I ran up to 3510 MHz with my E4300 while using a cheap shit PC2-3200 RAM. I adjusted so the memory is running slower than the FSB. When you have money later, invest on a good PC2-5300 or PC2-6400 set.

Hehe you are lucky here the diffrence is much greater
selling 805d would give me aroun 250 PLN (around 80 bucks)
and cheapest e4300 is 600pln (around 200 bucks)

Ok becouse i have heard there are some oc problems with 965 mobos when you use multiplier other than 1:1

Most problems I heard are mostly a slight performance loss, which is true. However, to hold till you get money for better ram, it's a acceptable compromise.

I bought the processor used and core 2 duo was little cheaper than what it is now. He said he couldn't get it stable on DS3 @ 3.0ghz but he never fiddled around too much and he was content on 3.0ghz.

Perfectly stable on my motherboard and orthos stable for 6 hours (never had time to go more than 6 hours). Have the computer on for days gaming, downloading, browsing, writing.. No crashes.

You're wasting time and money trying to upgrade netburst to another netburst processor. As you can easily overclock the 805D to 3.6-4.0ghz. Listen to everybody. Just upgrade the mobo and get ready for core2duo or Quads which Gigabyte S3 will allow you to do.

You can't run anything lower than 1/1 on 965 boards. While 975 can.
 
Ok now i'm just looking at my 965 S3 ready to instal ;) Countdown to serious overclocking already started

Ok i got it installed and compared to asrock it rocks ;)
Asrock was barely posting into windows at 3.2 while this gb so far works perfectly at 160 fsb (no messing with voltage other than ddr).

[edit] Looks like i got POS cpu which needed voltage increase to even finish superpi 1M at 3.33Ghz.

And it seems with 533 CPU lowest memory divider you can set is 2:1
[edit] Hmm ok i was wrong it was running 4:1 maximum divider to have ram at 533 with my glorious 805d :) Minimum is 2:1 and it set ram somewhere around sdram days :D

BTW if someone uses such mobo for 805 be extremly carefull becouse it seems to set starting fsb to 200 and memory to 800.
 
yep, 965 mobo's tend to think you have ddr2 800 and at least a 200FSB chip (e4300 or Pentium D 900's).

So if you plug some really crappy ram in, or some ram with really tight timings (like Cas 3), it might fail to boot at default voltage, so you can be screwed!!

So what will your Pentium D 805 do with some extra voltage?

Many people with those were hitting 3.8Ghz to even 4Ghz with good cooling and extra volts.

My 920 would do 4Ghz but it was 65nm (presler) not 90nm like your chip.
 
Well i didn't have much time so i got to 3.4 Ghz so far.

But i runned into problem- when i connect heaphones and pci-expres is overclocked to 110 it starts to reset. While there are no problems with speakers (altrough it's moot point as my headphones costed more than my speakers and i need them to play at 1-2am when family sleeps :D )
 
I'll be selling my ds3 soon. the onboard sound is not working (or atleast it's not for me), but I have a soundcard for that.
 
Update got it working at 3.5 @ 1.43V however 3.6 reboots even with 1.45V.
[edit] Lol i can't finish 3dmark even at 1.55V with 3.6Ghz.
Best superpi around 3740.
