Cheap Speakers

I am currently using the built in speakers on my Asus VH242H and in some movies, especially blu-ray, the conversations are a bit low for my gf and I to hear. Even with the monitors, windows and the players volume at max.

I was wondering if there are any speakers out there preferably around $20 that would actually be better than these. I am definitely not very picky on the sound quality, just looking for something that can actually produce enough volume for us to hear the conversations in movies.

I don't really know a whole lot about audio and I am not entirely sure what to look for when searching for speakers, so was hoping to get some help here. Now I do understand that there might not be possible to get speakers that actually work for longer than a day for this price but I'll try.

Just go to Staples / Office Depot / Best Buy and pick up a cheap pair of powered speakers. Even the crappiest ones will be significantly louder than the ones integrated in to the LCD. Sound quality isn't going to be good, but I doubt it'll be much worse, either. In that price range there's nothing much to look for -- either it's $20, or it's not. There are no "good" $20 speakers.

They're all about the same quality at that price point. Buy whatever's on sale or would look nice on your desk.

$60 for speakers is cheap. $130 will buy you great PC speakers.

$20 only buys cr*p. But, if all you want to do is hear the words in the movies, this will work.

The speakers could last you 10 years, working out to a mere $13/year for something that is loud and clear, rather then muddy and uneven.

Actually $100 will buy you a set of Swan M10s, which are great PC speakers, but that's 5x what the OP is looking to spend, so... pointless.

Buy used on craigslist. Get a set of 2.1 speakers for under $20. I got my BA745 for $10.

I bought a pair of powered Dell A215 on Ebay last year. Can be found 5 bucks to $20
I think they are called Dell Altec Lansing Multimedia A215

Thank you all for your input, I will take a look around to see if I can find anything tomorrow :)

I do understand that I can get a great audio system that will last me for many years if I put some money into it. I had a great 5.1 system for $200 (at least great to me) back in my country but I moved here and had to leave everything behind.

As an international student I am not allowed to work outside campus and they are also ripping me off with the tuition ;-) so after having to buy new furniture, bed, computer etc.. I didn't feel like spending too much money on items I won't be using all too much :-P.

I am thankful for your response though and your suggestions look very interesting!

If money is such a big issue, use a media player with dynamic range compression. This will boost the volume of what you're having trouble hearing.

Cost: $0.

Blowing speakers is not something I try to do.

I'm glad to hear that you steer clear of perversion. I know you're not talking about dynamic range compression blowing speakers. Really, the only danger from that comes from using too strong of an amp.

I tried using that Dynamic Range Compression with CyberLink PowerDVD but it didn't really make a difference. I don't know if I was doing it wrong or if it has something to do with the player or my speakers but I tried going back and forth and couldn't tell if it was on or off.
