Hey, lately certain things have been extremely slow on my computer.. things like opening documents, images, folders, or evan right clicking files takes longer than it should. My XP install isn't all that old, maybe 3 or 4 months, and I defragged about a month ago because of this but nothign happened.

Is my hard drive dieng?

see sig for specs..

Or have rebooted lately.
The longer Windozes runs the worse the performance I get.
So I tend to reboot every week or so.

Luck....... :D

Hey, checked for spyware/adware with spybot and adaware, and there were a few but I got rid of them. I also ran my virus scanner which found around 10 infected files,I got rid of them too. Oh, and before anyone asks they were all upto date.

I don't run windows 24/7 so that wouldn't be a problem, I turn it off when ever i'm done using it.

I got a program to check SMART, called HD Tune, still trying to figure out what that is so any info on that would be great.

edit: forgot to say, still same problem

Thanks for the help so far..

as u say check ur hdd (maybe smt rotten in there)
then check in task manager what run ur pc in idle.
u see smt rotten again there?
smt u don know?
the virus worms what ever u found sure gone all?
check in ms config what load ?

We had the same issue recently and I am pretty sure it was some excess spyware that wasn't getting cleaned out.

Did a fresh install of Windows to a new directory, and ours runs fast again. I like a complete reformat every so often, but sometimes that can be a pain to do, and installing a "new" windows is a little less fuss n bother.

On another computer, I once also had one of the hard drives switch to PIO mode (apparently windows will sometimes make that downgrade automatically if it runs into disk errors a few times), so you might check device manager and make sure it is not at a PIO setting.

This is sound advice. I've also heard about the PIO problem, and think that if Spyware isn't the cause, that might be it. Formatting is good though every once in a while (I do it at least once a year).

Yeah I had already checked and made sure it was on DMA mode, forgot to mention that.

I also like a new format every so often, lately I haven't been on my computer like I used to (busy!) so I haven't had the time.. If I was I probably would have already..

Thanks for the advice, I guess i'll just reformat once I get time.

You guys think it's worth it to 0 my drive? I always had a "fresh" feeling after doing that..

I always like the new computer feel when I format :). The only problem is I only do it when I have problems, so I'm frustrated at having to waste the time to do it :(.

You know I have had this problem and you know what it was for me? My Video Card drivers. It took forever to render the GUI and seemd like everything was slow. Even when Menus popped up it was like they slowly faded in and it was painful. I just DLed the lastet ATi drivers and presto. Worked again. Somehow my hardware acceleraton got turned off... and I dont know how

1. Update Spyware; Run Spyware
2. Update Anti-virus; Run Anti-virus
3. chkdsk or scandisk (OS dependent)
4. Disk Cleanup
5. Defrag
6. Restart
