im upgrading my cousins computerwith some spare parts, and i have these two choices: PII 400 mhz, or Celeron 466 mhz. which one would be the faster out of the two? it will most likely be paired up with 128 mb ram.

because right now all they have is like a p1 166 or so, and there dad is an idiot and wont let them use his computer (brand spanking new dell) because he thinks theyll mess it up. so i have some spare parts around, and i thought id just upgrade it. i have no use for the parts anyway.

After testing a 266 PII @333 and a mendocino 333 they both came out equal in speed, So I would pick the celly.

I'd opt for the PII 400, 100Mhz FSB will probably make the system a bit more snappier.

I'd go with the P2. Has more L2 cache and a faster FSB. Properly configured it'd be nice and quick.

Maybe I'm just forgetting, but wasn't the big deal with P2 vs Celeron that the Celeron had full-speed cache while the P2 had half-speed? Given that, I'd go with the Celeron any day.

P2 all the way.

The P2 has 512KB L2 cache running at 200Mhz
The P2 has a 100Mhz FSB
The Celeron has 128KB L2 cache running at 466Mhz
The Celeron has a 66Mhz FSB

The last difference (100Mhz <-> 66Mhz) makes the P2 faster.

Make sure the mobo and RAM support 100Mhz operation. If you have to go with 66Mhz RAM, the difference between the P2 and Celeron will be smaller.

Enjoy!

However the Celeron has less on die cache (128KB vs 512KB of the PII) so it evens out clock for clock, I benched a 300A @ 450 against a PII 450 and they're about dead even exactly.

id go with the celeron. odds are itll overclock to ~550mhz, i had a 433@590

as the clock speed gets higher, so does the performance difference, but its not that big.

As acascianelli said, overclock it. Most of those old boards didn't do well over 100MHz, and quite a few ran 75 or 83 quite nicely, odds are that Celery will whip the P2 nicely as it will clock higher.

If he games at all, given the low CPU and fsb speed, I'd still go with the Celeron. At 400MHz, the P2 was not bandwidth starved and neither was the Celeron.

I just got a Compaq box today that has a 400mhz PII, and its quite the little beast. I made the comp into a jukebox, and damn does it do the job... And with only 96mb of ram too.

i'd say celeron. the full speed cache made them as fast as the p2 despite the slower bus and less cache

alright, ill use the celeron. my cousin's really only looking to browse the internet, and talk on aim, not any heavy gaming (maybe some flash?)

The Celeron will work fine.

Here is what you can do though. Try both and see what one performes better for what he is doing. I would use the P4 personally with the higher bus speed, but if the Celeron can overclock to a 100Mhz bus and you are comfortable giving him something overclocked then go for it.

First, its not a p4, its a p2. And second, why waste the time swapping chips and benchmarking? Personally I have bought both of these chips brand new when they were released along with several other celerons and p2's from there 233mhz release as have others here.

I think its a safe bet to take our advise here and just go with the celeron as most of us here have tried and tested these chips ourselves and already know what the outcome will be.

Unless the thread starter wants to do it himself thats fine, although I think he wanted the communities experience to help him hence him starting this thread and not bothering to do the chip swap and benchmarking himself.

I gotta back CentronMe on that.
If you're serious about pushing it, swap the chips. Never know, he may have a P2 that overclocks well... I doubt it...

I don't think the thread starter has mentioned overclocking at all, but if he did want to overclock the system (wouldn't recommend it if giving to a friend) then I would definatly check out the p2.

For stock speeds I would use the celeron.
