Sounds pretty awesome for those with Physx cards! I assume it would've been difficult to command shelve space from retailers for a product that doesn't run on 99.999999999% of machines out there....

and anyway, who doesn't like free stuff? I'd be interested to know whether they included a multiplayer component, and also how it performs over a network.

Its supposed to include a multiplayer component.

I didnt play the demo, but apparently that was something that the demo was lacking (and I mean multiplayer in the non LAN sense).
 
The Cellfactor demo was a major blunder for Ageia. It was supposed to require a Physx card to run at all, like the other free physx game downloads. For sure, if that shortcut workaround wasn't discovered, it would have been. Now the game provides little incentive to buy Physx card for anyone with a good dual core machine. Regardless, I look forward to it. They promised 4 times the flying debris with destructable environments over the demo. I'm anxiously waiting for hardware/software comparisons.

When you use the workaround, a lot of stuff like the cloth and liquids aren't there, because those actually did (and possibly still will) need a PhysX card.
 
People act like that PPU workaround was some sort of big conspiracy to sell more PPUs they didn't want you to know about; considering the shortcut command was actually built into the game and was updated in later versions to allow more physics without a PPU I wouldn't exactly call it a big secret. Everyone who has played the beta has seen there is significant benefit from a PPU so I wouldn't call it a blunder either, even with a top of the line CPU the cloth framerates were unplayable in combat training and revolution has even more objects.

Revolution is the same, you can play the game without a PPU but for the best experience and performance you need one installed. Three of the five levels are unavailable to none PPU users because they need the hardware for the gameplay; I am sure however someone will find a way around it and have access to those levels, liquids and cloth not included.

I thought that was never the intention, because of the sheer amount of data that would need to be synchronized between clients...thats why I thought LAN was a requirement. I suppose we'll find out.
 
What kind of game is this suppose to be? I played the demo a while back and all you could really do is throw things around in a somewhat small area just like the trailer from the website. Is this suppose to be like Unreal Tournament or is there a story mode like DOOM 3 or something.

if you consider 0 to 3 frames per second "running" (regardless of how kickass your computer is, and without the majority of special effects) then yes it runs without a physx card on ultra low graphics with that workaround. if you actualy want to play the game you need to buy a card, and sence the game is free and prices have come down a bit, many more people will be inclined to do so.
 
i read that if you dont have a ppu card you will be limited to 2 lvs that isnt ppu crazyness and then some SP. I dont remember it all. Plus they said something about making the game free instead of selling it next month. i think the info was on the page.

I've no doubt the whole experience would be better with a PPU, but the fact remains it's playable without it. And yes, it was absolutely a blunder. The game was supposed to be strictly PPU-only. They said it when they showcased it to hardware sites. Once the secret was out, Ageia and physx took a beating on MBs everywhere, and they had no choice but to allow a software mode in the final game. There are other free games, Warmonger, Stoked Rider, some water game I forget the name of, that they won't let you play without a PPU, and the purpose of all of them is to help push hardware sales. Cellfactor was supposed to be one of them.
Despite my comments above, I actually hope the difference between software and hardware mode for the finished Cellfactor is substantial. I'm not one of those people that want to see Ageia fail. I just want to see that their card lives up to the high expectations.
 
Again people are acting like it is a conspiracy, if it was a secret why would the command be built into the game in the first place? They could have easily removed it before releasing the beta to the public, even without the command people were playing it via the construction set, does this sound like something they are trying to hide? Go check YouTube, there are tens of videos going on about CellFactors software mode like it is the biggest game secret since hot coffee; the PPU does not need to restrict access to games in order to promote its purchase.

The purpose of the PPU, the entire point of buying it, is to accelerate physics that the CPU struggles with to provide affects that otherwise would not be achievable today. Seeing how the enhanced physics cannot be used at playable frame rates without a PPU I'd say it is pretty much already promoting its usefulness without the aid of artificial restrictions. Basic collision detection offloading to the PPU may improve performance; but it is not one of those affects CPUs cannot do, sadly people seem to think it is so make a big fuss about running it without one like it is some type of triumph.

People say just being able to play the game without a PPU defeats its purpose, I disagree, I think trying these games without a PPU proves its usefulness by benchmarking even the best CPUs against the PPUs performance. Why turn off advanced affects just because a PPU is not present? I say bring on software mode cloth, liquids, soft bodies and other such affects; let them see the performance difference with their own eyes. Upon the release of revolution it should be interesting to see more PPU/CPU comparisons, I just hope if they manage to get the PPU levels to work that the full affects will be shown as comparisons would be pointless without their presense just like combat training.
 
I'am realy lookin forward to see the script structure of this game in c#. And lookin forward to Reality builder modding for it. A full game is a better example then a mager demo. :)

At any rate I know I'm getting my PPU finally just for this game, along with Warmonger and Warhammer Online. I just wish I knew more about the ETA of the PCI-Ex1 cards so I could know if I can hold off or not.

Your comments are pretty silly considering the history behind PhysX’s development. The engine evolved from the novodex engine, which Ageia bought, that was all about doing Physics on the CPU long before the PPU ever existed. Even after it became the PhysX engine it didn’t support the PPU until I believe the 2.3 release of the engine. That is why you have programs such as 3dmark06 which utilize the engine but do not support the PPU (older pre-ppu version of the engine).

So yeah, the fact that you can have the CPU handle physics processing isn’t exactly surprising. It is quite clear though, and the benchmarks support this, that the game is much more playable with the PPU. It isn’t as much the max FPS that changes, but the minimum FPS. When the shit hits the fan (which is often in this game) FPS tanks in software physics mode whereas the PPU just plows through it (that’s without cloth and liquids, since that just makes things obvious but you’d all rather pretend they don’t matter).

Beyond that, the whole idea that “I can do physics on my 2nd core” implies that your 2nd core is simply going to be sitting there idle not doing anything. It’s actually quite amazing how well the PhysX engine is able to take advantage of multiple cores in software mode, and that does give it a bit of flexibility in that regard, but games are becoming multi-threaded as well. Pretty soon all your games will be taking advantage of multiple cores, and when the physics intensive scenes occur, you’re not only going to not have an idle core sitting there, the engine is going to compete for processor time over all the available cores (since it’s multi-threaded). In the end it won’t just be about how fast it is with the PPU, it will also be about how much taking that burden off your CPU is going to enhance your overall experience.
 
I'm aware the engine is multi-threaded. That doesn't change the fact that the Cellfactor demo was supposed to be PPU only, and that was the main point of my first post. It was just an oversight that it was released with a work-around. They probably thought no one would find it. From all the posts on MBs and the youtube videos, it's clear to me that with a high-end CPU would provide decent performance for the rigid bodies and I've already admitted that the whole thing is be better with a PPU, both in features and performance. For the other features, people have been critical of how the fluids look, and while the way the cloth moves is fantastic, it's not integral to the gameplay, at least in the demo.

Well you don't have a choice. GamePlay Physics is a heavy burden for Netload.
If you want to play online it could be to Play 1 vs 1 or at most 2 vs 2. With a highbandwide connection.

While in a LAN you can play with more Players.

Or find some local Gaming friends who would like this game. A small HomeLan Party.

I have 2 PPU enabled gamerigs. So I can easy show visitors some hand on experience with such games.

Gonna upgrade my third to make it a Vista DX10 PPU ready game rig in early june .

Hamachi wouldn't work well at all for Cellfactor; the problem isn't that the developers were just too lazy to create internet capable multiplayer, it's that the nature of the game demands that too much information would have to travel between clients. i.e. we just don't have fat enough and fast enough pipes to have smooth gameplay.

Not me, but I really do hope it does make a splash. I really, really want PPU's to take off... I think they can unlock a lot of great functionality :). I just don't see enough to invest in it yet, personally, though. Still, the prices have dropped significantly, which is great, and does make it something I will buy once I see a compelling reason to for me :D.

Um no. I ran it on the computer in my sig (except I had a 3800+ single core at the time), and ran at about 25-35 frames, though I did have pauses when blowing stuff up.

Why do people always do this? *sigh* If by running the game you mean with all the advanced physics affects such as cloth and liquid disabled then yeah, you ran the game just fine...

Terr- I mean annoyeddragon, the blood was hideously ugly and cloth was just an add-on for the demo, adding nothing to the game. Worse yet, it ran pretty badly with or without a PPU.

I'm willing to give it another shot, but i'm not holding out much hope.
 
I wonder what they do in revolution. CT was just a fast made demo.
what does CFR do. The had more time to do a bitty full game.
