Catalyst 8.12

Having chain reboots, after clean install, had to roll back to previous working driver i was using. Was looking forward to it working properly.

Crashes in windows, right past login screen, when loading desktop, using an amd 3800 x2 chip, nforce 4 board, and hd4850.

Probably some wire's crossed in the driver selection

User error. Must be. Because according to you and alg7, ati drivers are tip freaking top and would never cause any issues with your machine unless your machine had major issues already. I see the usual bsod on startup issue is still around for many of us with these new drivers. That must be a figment of our imaginations though eh...

I'll try them this weekend but I am 99% sure that it will result in a trip to safe mode and end up with me running system restore. Yay.

Well, I have a 4870x2 and so far the only game I've tested is Far Cry 2. I usually get an average of 40-45 and now I'm getting about 60-70 FPS with maxed settings, 8x, 16AF at 1920x1080. Will try the other games later.

there is a difference. i didn't attributed the lockups to bad drivers. only a conflict with my system configuration. if i don't watch tv my system is fine with 8.12 but 8.11 works the best for me out of the driver set.

Some people would just find a solution to a problem and move along, some would troll about it in almost every thread.

Too bad the 8.12 doesn't work for you but as long as you still can keep your system up and running, I guess that it is not a big deal. Btw did you try the 8.12 beta before?

no i try to stay away from beta.

 
i had a drop of 11 fps on crysis map rescue. windows xp64bit 8.11 was 36-37, with the 8.12 i had dropped to 25.1 at the same load spot.
 
I ran one 3 loops of the Far Cry 2 benchmarks. This is a difference going from first 8.10, 8.11 rc1 (beta) to the now 8.12 drivers. These are all at the same settings which are:

Crossfire X:

Update: To say the least that's quite impressive. Now maybe I'll give the game a chance with it running this smooth. :D




I also ran around in Far Cry 2 blowing things up and the 8.12's feel so much smoother compared to the other drivers. I'm pretty happy with the results as the processor is still underclocked but almost matching my 3.8ghz overclock. I'm about to go try out Left 4 Dead, Fallout 3 and Day of Defeat

Even though I approve of these drivers I had to cross my fingers and hope it would work with my two 4850's. All of the prior drivers (except for 8.6 and 8.11 rc1) would BSOD me to death that I started having to resort to almost pulling my hair out. ATI's drivers worked this round but by all means they really need to fix their drivers and make them more stable.
 
Using an 4870x2 on a x48 mobo, using Vista 64 - rest of my system is listed in my sig...

No problems using the new drivers.

Two GPUs listed in CCC as well as device manager. No blue screen at all.

I uninstalled 8.11, restarted, deleted all the residual ATI folders from my PC and then installed 8.12. I play games and don't spend much time benchmarking games, so I can't say much about performance increase.

thanks for posting the results, but 800mhz is a lot in Far Cry 2 :D
 
I still received the BSOD with 4850 in crossfire.

Had to boot into safe mode, use system restore, and go back to before I installed them.

Back to the 8.10's for me.

My system is the same, except my mobo is an X38. I followed the exact same steps. No issues with 8.12

GRID is really smooth
UT3 is excellent
Farcry 2 seems faster and smoother
COD4 excellent.
I dont benchmark, but I will try encoding a video and report back on my findings.

I was thinking to overclock it to 3.8ghz and running the benchmarks again to see the difference. That'll take me a bit since I haven't been able to peel myself away from Left 4 Dead except for this post. :D

Crossfire 4870s and 8.12 is working fine for me so far. However, whenever I lauch WoW (haven't tried another game yet), I get the ATI Crossfire logo in the upper right-hand side of my screen. I haven't been able to find a setting to turn it off in both CCC or WoW settings. Since I haven't tried another game yet, i'm not sure if its WoW specific advertising/branding or ATI and i've not had this happen on previous drivers.

EDIT: Nevermind, I found it. Its located in the System Tray, under xfire settings.
 
I can confirm that the 8.12's fixed my fallout 3 issue.
I would have to alt+tab or restart the game to restore frame rates. Also, occasionally, the frame rate would be 1/2 of what it should be upon loading a game, then jump to 60 after a minute.

All gone now.
Silky smooth with both cores of my 4870X2 chugging along.

Well well WELL done ATI.

how am i being a jerk? i posted 2 possible explinations. for some people its user error or conflict as u also indicate with a chipset.

Having issues with both 8.11 and 8.12 (haven't tried 8.10 yet)

After the initial install, I get a BSOD when the computer first boots back up. After resetting, Vista loads fine but I am unable to turn off X-fire, instant BSOD after hitting apply to turn it off.

Sig needs updating so here's my specs

e8400 - P5Q Pro
2x2gb OCZ Fatal1ty DDR2 800
2x HD4850 TOPS
Vista 64 Ultimate

Also I'm running dual monitors off the first card's two DVI ports (don't know if this makes a difference)

This is a fresh install so no other drivers have hit this system.
 
These drivers have worked fine for me. I have an Intel X38 chipset, and have a 4870x2. They fixed problems I was having with Fallout3. Everything seems to run smoother.

There will always be people who have problems with drivers. It's not all ATI's or Nvidia's fault that the drivers cause problems on some systems. There are just too many configurations out there.
 
I'm still having that issue where you alt tab with Fallout 3 and my framerates are cut in half and I have to alt tab again to restore my framerates.

But at least this driver increased its performance, when I ventured into the outland with 8.11, my FPS would drop from 60 to 20 which is horrible. At least I'm getting a constant 60 FPS most of the time.

Haven't really noticed any performance increases with other games.
 
I am using 8.11 with the hotfix and CoD:World at War crashed now and then with somesort of error that made no sense at all. I may have to re-install with 8.12

All appears to be well. But I have a question about the Avivo Converter and I asked this after at Rage3D as well and haven't managed to get an answer yet.

Does the new Avivo (first time I've ever installed it) take all of the video conversion processing and move it to the GPU or does it use the CPU and the GPU in order to convert videos? I ask because when I convert videos I still put nearly full load on my quad-core.

Yeah it still put around 50-60% of load on my CPU.
 
With these drivers a lot of mobs and environmental items are transparent. It is messing with my mind man.
 
Fallout3 seems smoother on my system, though I am still severely CPU limited.
 
When you go into safe mode go to start menu and right click on My computer
click on manage then go to down to services and disable the ati external event viewer


its causing you to bsod but its trying to engage crossfire or something at the wrong time or something. thats why you need to diable it then manually select crossfire and then restart and renable it then it will work fine and not cause the bsod !

So I'm assuming you install the 8.12's as normal, but you DO NOT restart when it asks. You restart to safe mode, correct? Once in safe mode you disable the ati external even viewer, then reboot into normal mode. Then re-enable it.

Do I have this process correct?

I think you should create a new thread about this if this really can help some people with the BSOD. This thread is already 6 pages long and some people would have missed it.
 
I am excited to get my Sapphire HD4870 1GB in today and try out the new drivers as well :D

I imagine it might a little step up from my 8600gt ;)
 
8.12 working perfectly in my system with my 4870x2... just like 8.9, 8.10, 8.11 were also working perfectly for me...

Unistall 8.11, install 8.12... no BSOD, no problems, every games I have in my comp still working fine (Fallout 3, NWN2 Storm of Zehir, Far Cry 2, SupCom Forged Allaiance, Crysis and C Warhead...)

Core i7 920 and Asus P6T deluxe X58. :D
 
My plan is to disable crossfire, stop ati event service, then upgrade 8.10 to 8.12 and see if i get the bsod like i did with 8.10 to 8.11. I know the problem is with the drivers and crossfire. It just doesn't make sense why some people are getting bsod during installs/uninstalls while others with the same hardware don't?? My bsod always comes when i get the warning during driver install or uninstall that says your screen may flicker and go blank for a few seconds. I was able to install 8.9 once but it bsod'd when i switched to 2nd monitor so I went back to 8.6 with a system restore. 8.6 to 8.10 worked flawlessly for some reason...
