New Features

This release of Catalyst® introduces the following new features:

* Video Quality Improvements
* Windows Media Center Edition Video Conversion Utility

Video Quality Improvements

Improvements have been made to the Avivo video processing engine during standard definition (SD) video playback. Edge enhancement or sharpening effectively improves image quality by enhancing details lost during encoding and processing. Noise reduction algorithms are improved to ensure original detail is preserved, while removing unwanted noise.
Windows Media Center Edition Video Conversion Utility

Catalyst® 6.4 introduces a Windows MCE Video Conversion utility. This utility allows users to convert video content that is recorded by MCE, or video content that is available to MCE, to variety of different formats. The video content can be converted to MPEG-2, MPEG-4 SP, MPEG-4 AVC and Windows Media. Ipod Video and PSP video are listed as separate formats for easy recognition.
Performance Improvements

As with most Catalyst® releases, performance has increased in various situations.

* 3DMark06 CPU scores improve as much as 4.9% across all product lines
* 3DMark06 HDR 2 Deep Freeze (SM3.0) test improves as much as 2%
* Call of Duty 2 improves approximately 1.4-2% on Radeon® X1900 and Radeon® X1800 Crossfire™ configurations. Gains are slightly less (1.3%) for non-Crossfire™ Radeon® X1900 and Radeon® X1800 products
* FarCry improves 2-3% on ATI Radeon® X1900 non-Crossfire configurations. Greatest improvements result from tests with no AA and AF
* Half Life 2 improves as much as 3.8% on Radeon® X1900 non-Crossfire configurations. Greatest improvements result from tests with no AA and AF
* Unreal Tournament 2004 gains 3-5% on all Radeon® X1x00 non-Crossfire configurations

Anyone notice that the WDM drivers now have a new name? It used to be called WDM specialization codec (or something to that effect) to me but is now called ATI T200 Unified AVStream Driver (I also needed the XP cd on hand for soemthing called a 'BPE Filter' [sp?]).

Does this come with the chuck(Oblivion AA + HDR) patch build in?

I keep seeing improvements for the X1xxx series of cards (which I will eventually get one), but I haven't seen any new improvements for the X800XT series of cards for the last several drivers (unless I missed something somewhere).

I'm currently using 5.12 (5.11 maybe?) and it's been working just fine, so I'm wondering if I should even bother upgrading to 6.4? or *any* of the 6.'s versions???

Suggestions??

It sucks but I don't think the X800 series is going to get any love. They want us to upgrade :p

Plus, a lot of their tweaks focus on the memory controller of the x1k series. I wonder if they will ever optimize opengl for multithreading like they did D3D? And can these be used without installing CCC? Such as, using the old control panel applet?

I think im using 5.13 because they introduced the D3D multithreading tweaks in 5.12 or 5.13...

Honestly, a good way to quickly check how good a driver is, is to run RTHDRBL at max res. If you see a FPS increase good, FPS decrease bad. Takes all of 5 seconds and has more relevance than 3dmark.

Remember back when the X800 series was brand new? Every catalyst release introduced a performance increase in applications because they were still streamlining the drivers. Now we are seeing the same thing with the X1x00 line.

How can they provide a performance increase using optimized drivers if the X800 is already optimized as much as it possibly can be?

IDK why I keep updating my drivers. I have an X850XT PE and the last real performance upgrade was from the 5.13's. Oh well, I supppose they could be fixing bugs I'm not aware of.

In case anyone is wondering: 6.4 display drivers work fine with the 5.11 control panel.

New games, new technologies(dual core)... There are always areas for improvement.

OK Cat 6.4 is really messed up for some reason or another. I had to uninstall 6.4 then clean my registry, then use driver cleaner 2x already. My problems started when XP hung during the "shutting down" phase after the initial install. I should have known there was more problems ahead of me. I could run 3d06 fine...even a nice bump in performance from 5800s to 5900s. But it would not run BF2. And, I would get artifacting with a black/white screen when in the XP bootup screen (which I never modified). After uninstalling 6.4 I have no more artifacting and that black/white screen during bootup.

Cat 6.4 is a pure pile of you know what! This Cat 6.4 is messing everything up on my system. I am getting a lot of "flashes" across text within popup screens on the desktop like windows task manager, etc. And, Cat 6.4 renders ATI TOOL useless now for my x1900xtx. Was that their intention with 6.4? It will no longer close the CCC services when your start ATI TOOL and when you try to run a game all I got was artifacts. BF2 artifacted like crazy at the menu screen. Wired, 3d06 ran flawless and I got a boost from 5800x to 5900s wired, very berry wired. Try Cat 6.4 at your own risk...

ah thank god I wasn't the only one with those problems. I was experiencing the EXACT same problems with my games and on bootup. I couldn't get anything 3D to run with or without ATITool. I tried BF2 and Guild Wars and both would lock up my system with 6.4's, but I never tried 3d06. I went back to the 6.3's and everything works fine again - only after my comp BSOD'd when I went to reboot after uninstalling the 6.4's.

Another pissed off ATi user here, i installed cat 6.4 and right after the windows loading screen just before the login screen i get like 2-3 seconds of weird yet total screen corruption then it goes away, i think i'll be going back to 6.3

Anybody else have trouble getting CCC to force AA & HQAF?

I force 4x AA from CCC but still I get no AA in Oblivion. Only when I set 4x AA from Oblivion settings the AA kicks in. Same can be said with HQAF, I messed around taking screenshots with HQAF on/off but I did not notice any difference with very angled surfaces.

This seems to be only Oblivion related as with Galactic Civilization 4 the forcing AA from CCC works just well. This is naturally with 6.4 catalyst.

Is there somekinda voodoo trick Iam missing or what :)

I think Catalyst AI has to be on. Shame really, but it lets me run HDR + 8x HQAF + 4xAA, remaining above 30fps at all times so far. It may only be 1024x768, but still looks awesome. Can't remember the last time I had to game at this res.

I think the biggest news isn't this 3dmark refresh, but that there are new(?) linux drivers with X1000-series support! Let's see some "reviews" of that instead:

The ATI Proprietary Linux driver is designed to support the following ATI desktop products:
Radeon® X1900 series
Radeon® X1800 series
Radeon® X1600 series
Radeon® X1300 series
[...]

https://a248.e.akamai.net/f/674/9206/0/www2.ati.com/drivers/linux/linux_8.24.8.html

(yeah, I know the link probably won't work. Stupid)

Cat 6.4 is not working correctly with the x1900 series.
-corruption at the boot up screen
-corruption when entering into any game
-ATI- Tool and Overclocker no longer function

I am not the only one having these problems.

I don't know what the deal is, but for the last few driver releases, I haven't been able to get the ATI support links to work:

ATI Customer Care > Drivers and Software > Windows XP > RADEON >

Subcategories in 'RADEON'
Display Drivers and Software for RADEON Products

Previous Drivers and Software
1. RADEON Previous Windows XP Drivers and Software versions prior to CATALYST 5.1 / Multimedia Center 9.03
2. CATALYST 5.5 Windows XP - Driver Download
more...

I have to click more..., then go to the second page of 'Previous Drivers' to find the most recent one.

I wouldn't rule out a problem between the keyboard and the chair, but all I'm doing is clicking...

I am not the only one having these problems.

maybe it's because you don't have an x1900

Installed the 6.4's on an A8N32 with an X1900XTX last night. WoW dropped me to the character screen once but worked as before afterwards. Star Wars Battlefront 2 worked without issue too. No problems booting Windows XP either. I did not see if my temperature/fan profile in ATITool was being adheared to but it was warmer room temp wise so I know the GPU temp went up to 70C and the fan was definitely louder so my guess is ATITool did it's thing. I'll try and confirm later but so far so good here.

All I did was uninstall the 6.3s, rebooted and installed 6.4s. In hindsight, I should have ran Driver Cleaner too but hey.

but 6.3 is cool right? I'm getting a 1900xt tommorow and would like to use a driver without issues.

Got Catalyst A.I set on Standard, but still it won´t force AA on Oblivion :( It´s not a huge deal to set it in game options, but a annoyance still :)

What a bizarre and trivial bug. Oh well, any fix is a good fix.

Major problems on my X1900XTX

Clearly this is not a typical sort of artifacting, but a display driver bug. bogomark06 hdr/sm3 tests work fine as do battlefield 2, aquamark 3, 3d05, etc. Oblivion? fucked.

you can't make stuff like that up. Indoors the game works fine. Outdoors it dies, even with HDR/bloom off and all the LOD mods uninstalled, ini file reset. never seen anything like it. I have the same problem with the 'chuck' patch.

The drivers break ati tool functionality as well, it was necessary to completely remove ati tool to get this display driver to work at all. With it installed I got a green screen of death, if you can believe that.

I get (temporary) graphical corruption when the display driver is initializing after windows bootstraps itself. One wonders if they did any QA at all with these piles of crap. WHQL must have just rubber stamped them.

I created a support ticket with that ss attached, we'll see if they have any response besides the ass scratching prototypical of tech support pukes.

6.3 WHQL? Golden

My 1900xt is doing the same thing as the others, going back to 6.3

Ugh another problem found with latests 6.3 & 6.4 catalyst. They won´t work with Samsung monitors using MagicTune software. Well atleast not for me, Iam using Samsung 193P+ monitor with X1900XT.

ATI do something :D
