Anyone try these drivers out? Apparently they were created to optimise doom 3 performance. ATi also said that they dont support the dirvers at all, just want to mkae sure nobody is really having bad issues w/ these so i dont screw up something myself.

They were used with the [H] Guide and I've seen a few people here post that they're using them fine.

They suck. I just installed them

1) It washed out the colors on my screen.

2) It made the doom3 screen run smaller than my monitor (even when playing Doom3 at the same resolution as my desktop)

3) I played for 4 hours last night without a single crash. Now it is crashing within 5 minutes each time.

4) it does not feel as smooth.

Time to search to see if anyone else is having these problems

Wow, that is one hell of a mess. I have 0 problems with them and gained about 3-4 fps on average in all situations.

It fixed a lot of problems for me, including the occasional stall and stutter. Now it runs smooth. I have a 9800 Pro BTW. Now if only I could figure out how to make the benchmark work.. I also did that tweak that Kyle recommended, the seta image_cacheMegs one. I think the "fixed" OpenGL is making CS crazy. I'm getting weird textures and stuff...

To run a benchmark in DooM3 bring down the console by hitting crtl alt ~ then type timdemo demo1 and hit enter

I am running a 9800 NoN Pro with the cats 4.9b and it runs great...
1024x768 High Quality I get 42.7 FPS

Is this a console command? Was it in a thread or the actual [H]OCP article? Strange, I didn't see it...nevermind, I'm searching.

Anandtech stated about a 5% performance gain (~2fps) for x800 users.

Not 100% true. The X800XT/PE users got about a 17% increase with high res and quality.

apparently this still isn't enought to close the gap as these are the drivers used for all of [H]'s testing and ATI still did poorly relative to Nvidia. I was hoping that their magic D3 drivers would be an improvement over the ones already benched by [H], not the drivers benched by [H]

Kinda off topic but how do you show FPS in game? I tried all things from other shooters I could think of.

No, its in the doomconfig.cfg file.

search for the line seta image_cacheMegs and set the value to whatever quantity of RAM your system has.

It boosted the computer in my Sig from 25.4fps to 39fps. Thats quite an improvement if you ask me.

I don't see anything visually different. Only other game I've played since updating is a few hours of WoW. No problems. Seem like great drivers to me.

AMD 2800+, 1.5GB of ram with a 9700 Pro and the 4.9 drivers, I get the following FPS scores using the built in timedemo at 1280 x 1024 resolution....

Ultra Quality 19.3
High Quality 20.4
Medium Quality 24.8
Low Quality 25.1

Then again at 1024 x 768

Ultra Quality 27.3
High Quality 29.3
Medium Quality 34.5
Low Quality 34.9

Methinks I could use an upgrade or two. ;)

I gained roughly 3-7fps on my xtpe. Everything else seems fine as well. KOTOR performance went up a bit as well. Overall, pretty decent beta drivers.

Again, according to Anand XTPE users got a 5% boost with AA disabled, and a 15% boost with 4xAA enabled. However according to HardOCP even on the most powerful CPU, 4xAA @ 1600x1200 wasn't playable on anything but the 6800U, so thats rather a moot point for x800 owners. In other words, most x800 owners will get ~5% boost as I stated earlier.

The new 4.9 beta did nothing for me. Used driver cleaner and ran timedemo before and afters and they were exactly the same !

timedemo demo1:
43.1 1024x768 high
46.1 1024x768 med
51 800x600 high
52.6 800x600 med

Someone on planet doom says they have bugs in them as well. I think the only improvements are for the x800 cards. I went back to 4.7

As I said, about 17%, if you factor both of them with those settings. About 20% for 1024x768, and 15% for 1600x1200. Its likely to be about 17% for a 1280x1024 res. Playable is different for other different people. 30fps is fine for some, and far too low for others. The fact is, there can be a 20% jump in frames, or there could be just a 5% gain, depending on the settings. Making a blanket statement like only being a 5% for the X800's is false. Under different settings, it can be much higher.

lol nice selective exclusion of the previous charts on the same page which show 5% across the board without AA. The game is unplayable with 4xAA at 1600x1200 with even the x800xtpe so performance increases there are moot.

People can click on this link to see perf increase without AA, which is what you will be using at 1600x1200 - about 5% increase:
http://www.anandtech.com/video/showdoc.aspx?i=2146

Why cant you admit you were wrong? There can be more than a 5% boost in frames. Claiming there is only a 5% boost for all X800's in all settings is just wrong. There could be 5%, 9%, 12%, etc, depending on the settings you use. Saying there is just 5% across the board is false. If you had said "About a 5% increase without AA" that would have been about spot on. Instead you said, "Anandtech stated about a 5% performance gain (~2fps) for x800 users.", which as I said, is not 100% true.

As I said, unplayable to you, isnt so for everyone.

heh. HardOCP tested one of the most powerful CPUs on the market, the FX53, with the x800xtpe at 1600x1200 @ 8xAF and 2GB of RAM and found it was unplayable with any level of anti aliasing. So again, the point is moot, because that is pretty much the best system you can buy and 4xAA was unplayable.

see test here:
http://www2.hardocp.com/article.html?art=NjQ0LDE3

In reality, x800 owners playing at 1600x1200 with no AA will get a 5% performance boost with the new drivers because 4xAA is unplayable as evidenced by the above article and Anand's results. And that's that.

To show fps in Doom3, you have to go to the Doom 3 directory, not use the command in console. (If there is a command, I just don't know it, don't quote that.) Go into the base directory and open up Doomconfig.cfg in notepad. Then look for "seta com_showfps "0"". Of course, change that value to 1, and pop! You now have your FPS shown. Now, if only you could uncap the frames... anyone know?

Once again, playable frames is not the same for everyone. My brother was happy playing BF at an average of 25 frames, while I wouldnt even consider playing with such low frames.

Anand also didnt test 1280x1024, which would probably be more of an increase than the percentage than the 1024x768 res, and less than the 1600x1200 res.

The fact is, there can much more than a 5% increase. For some reason you cant admit that, but oh well. Im done resonding to shortsightedness like this.

Sorry, I have to quote you ;) , when you're in the game, goto the console and type "set com_showfps 1" whenever you want.

Trans is merely pointing out that theoretics is great and wonderful...but the majority of users won't be taking advantage of it. In this thread alone absolutely no one has come out and said OMFG 17% INCREASE L33TAGE! For some people the new drivers flat out broke the game. For others theres was no noticable difference. A few got an increase of 3-4FPS. Are you going to argue against people who have the card and the drivers as well?

Ah well, it's a moot point anyways, Nvidia's latest drivers upped the performance by an ever greater margin. Nvidia took home the D3 prize, now we await HL2.
