Case OPen

It would probably lead to lower temps .... if you ambient temp is low in the room. But you will get a lot more dust on your compenents.

Like what if i have the side panel like laying on it leaving a big gap in the back. Is that worse or better.

On a case like mine, it does not lead to lower temps.
It would ruin the wind tunnel I have going in there.
There is a lot of air moving from front to back with my setup
and taking the side off would pretty much bork that concept up.
If you have poor case cooling it should be cooler...
lots of fans strategically placed, leave it on...
chances are you have poor cooling though if you are even asking.

My motherboard temp sensor goes up when I take the side off.

I have a blow hole in the door. This blows cool air directly on the northbridge/vid card. Remove the side and it creates a dead spot with no air flow.

depends on your airflow design...
The ambient temp in my house has gone up in the last few weeks (wife controls the thermostat) and I've had to remove the side panel. It's back to being stable again, but keep in mind, you'll need to clean out your case on a regular basis. DustOff is your friend...

good luck

my brother used to tell me crap about leaving the side of the case open (stattic damage, dust, etc) while the dust might be a problem, i dont think that its going to be THAT bad
