Can't seem to pull the upgrade trigger

I’ve been pretty happy with my system for the most part (rig in sig). It’s lasted many years, and I’m still able to manage High/Ultra in most new games, even with my recent monitor upgrade to 1440P (surprising to me). I’ve been thinking about a new CPU/mobo for a while, and I know that my next graphics card upgrade will pretty much necessitate it, to get the most out of the card. My recent experience with Dying Light is making me want it sooner, rather than later. That game laughed at my 4 gigs of RAM; it’s still playable (though not pretty) if I downgrade the textures to medium.

So, I’ve been thinking about taking the 90 min drive to Microcenter for one of their 4790K and mobo combo. Then all I’d need is some DDR3, a Hyper 212 Evo, and probably a new case. The fact that DDR4 is out is holding me back though. Given the length of time between major upgrades for me (5+ years), I can’t help but think that DDR3 is ‘old’ tech, and I should maybe wait a bit longer. I know there’s always something better around the corner, but I keep going back and forth in my mind.

If you want to hold out, and you have a 64-bit OS, see if you can find someone getting rid of their old DDR2 and pump the memory for fairly inexpensively. It could hold you off. Honestly, I'm not sure what Intel's timeline is for pushing DDR4 down on the mainstream desktop; and afaik, AMD isn't pushing for it either on their side.

I was actually reading that the textures were the same in Dying Light in medium vs high just allows access to more vram. I havent tried the game yet so take that with a grain of salt (in the gtx 970 memory issue posts).

If you are wanting ddr4 you need to wait for skylake to get it in the consumer platforms or you could go with socket 2011v3. You could actually go with the 5820k (hex core) for and additional $20 over the 4790k, with the lowest price board being a ASRock X99 Extreme4 for 205 AR

So your total bundle would be 299+234-20mir-40bundle = $473 (not saying you want to go that route).

I live a 40 to 45 minute drive to Microcenter and I still don't recommend anyone who lives nearby to actually make that trip. It's not really worth the time, gas, and effort at that point. So at 90 minutes, I really can't recommend the MC route for you unless you were already in the area for another occasion.

It won't be until 2016 that we'll be seeing DDR4 RAM in Intel's mainstream motherboards with the release of Intel's Skylake platform. DDR4 in and of itself isn't going to be that much noticeable faster than current DDR3 RAM in real world apps and games. However, the main advantage of DDR4 is RAM density: You could potentially get 64GB of RAM with just the regular mainstream motherboards compared to the 32GB of RAM max we see now with mainstream motherboards. As for the actual CPU performance of Skylake, if current Intel trend of CPU performance increase for the last six years continues, it won't be more than 10% maaaaaybe 15% (idealistically) faster than current Intel Haswell CPUs.

So realistically speaking, do you think you'll need more than 32GB of RAM AND are willing to wait a whole extra year or more for a mere 10% possibly 15% performance increase?

Honestly I'd crawl craigslist for someone upgrading from ivy/haswell to X99. Some people drop hardware for pretty cheap that'd be a big upgrade over what you've got. 3770k OC'd (delidded) IMO is where its at as far as best value and performance used at the moment while still being modern. Just be patient and score yourself a good deal.

Oh, I highly recommend microcenter for saving money on a CPU (if buying new) and a motherboard (open box). I got a MSI Z97 Gaming 5 for $80 dollars that had a $40 dollar mail-in rebate. Board came in the box w/not even a book (had to order i/o shield for $10) but for $50 I am a pretty happy guy. I then sold the MSI Z97 PC Mate board that came w/my $100 G3258 Proc/Board combo (Which also had another $10 rebate) for $60 on craigslist and then was a very..very happy guy. Wheel and deal bro, wheel and deal.

That's too funny. I make a post saying that I can't make up my mind, and I get four different answers ;)

I overestimated how long the Westmont Microcenter is from me; it actually looks just over an hour drive. Adding up the 4970k and the Asus Z97-AR I was thinking about pairing it with, vs buying online (with no tax) comes out to about $65 saved. Probably not worth the time and gas like Dang said. Also, if I do buy online I get exactly what I want and am not locked into a combo.

I'll keep checking the FS/T forums here, and CL too, just in case I can find a good deal. I'll make a new build thread if I do decide to go ahead with a new purchase. Cheers!
