can't overclock e4500 :(

as the title says, i cannot overclock AT ALL! something is wrong here...

here's the hardware specs:
e4500
gigabyte GA-P35-DS3L
OCZ Platinum 800Mhz DDR2
Corsair HX620 psu
radeon 4870 512mb
x-fi xtrememusic
some other shit

oh and this system is on water for both the cpu and video....temps are glorious of course, max 38 C under full load both cores. i've been doing the AMD for years until i killed my s939 mobo...got the wife a laptop and commandeered her computer.

strangely i cannot overclock at all. i updated the BIOS to the latest, F9. the easy tune software does nothing, so i go into the bios...even changing the settings to manual and staying at stock won't work. it can't even post! restarts itself....auto settings are rock solid...so whats going on? i'm stumped here. bum bios flash?
 
id have to say its a bad bios.. when you change it to manual settings are you leaving the cpu voltage on auto? im wondering if maybe the manual voltage is lower then what its actually setting it at in auto.. those are my only logical guesses..
 
Something that has worked for a lot of people, http://www.hardforum.com/showthread.php?t=1451833 is this:

Unplug the computer from the wall or flip the power switch on the PSU to off. (completely remove AC power from the machine)

Remove the CMOS battery from the holder. (see your manual - it is easy to do)

Put the cmos jumper in the clear postion (manual again if needed)

Give the machine at least a good hour in that condition.

Remove jumper, replace battery, restore power.

Just to be sure I recommend the following before the above to ensure you have a good flash (actually if it was bad the machine likley would not boot at all - but just to be sure)

go into bios and load the "factory defaults" settings.
reboot
make double damn sure you have the correct bios for your exact model and version of the board.
flash the bios.
On first boot up after flash go in and reload "factory defaults" and reboot.
Shutdown and do the power-off cmos clear procedure above.
On first boot up go directly into bios and load factory defaults again
reboot
go into bios and set a very mild OC, fix memory settings and other options etc.

See how that goes. The extended cmos clear has fixed several peoples boards who reported the same exact issue you are having

i tired both auto and manual on the voltage settings, turned the ram speed down so that it does not get overclocked.

i'll give what you were saying a shot bill, not much to lose right? thanks guys.
 
Yeah that sounds like the Gigabyte screwy bios issue. Do as Bill mentioned and it should go back to normal.
 
well i even tried using the stock settings for this cpu, just in manual mode.

for example, an e4500 runs at 2.2Ghz so i had the FSB in manual mode and set it to 200 and left the multiplier at 11. ram left alone at its stock 800 and left voltage on auto. still crapped out.

thanx for the confirmation hydro, i'm definitely going to give it a go tonight. just don't have the time atm. i'll let u guys know what happens

and thanks again for the help...like i said my experience has been mostly amd and asus boards with overclocking.
 
so i'm happy to say i found a solution! its an odd one but what the hell, more of a workaround.

the steps didn't help at all, but still great info i may need one day later bill. so my solution was this: made bios changes that i know will cause it to not post. it actually just tries and restarts itself not changing a damn thing. BUT this time i go back into the bios, settings are strangely still there and just save and quit again. and then it works. can't explain it, but hey i can live with it.

HOWEVER i have one other problem that maybe you guys can help with...

Dead or dying CMOS battery perhaps? Try replacing it with a new one and see if that error goes away.
 
He's definately using windows 2000, as the classic theme for further versions of Windows is a little bit different.
