ok i have an athlon 64 3200+ and i am running it at 2.2ghz but i cannot go any farther.. without being stabilized offcourse.. anyways my mb is a gigabyte k8n pro i have 1 gig rev2 ocz which i run in 5:4 so that rules out the memory. My mb is an nforce150 with no pci lock, but i can run 3dmark03 at 2.3ghz but it would crash in the middle so i guess that rules out teh pci not being locked as a problem.. anyways i put my v core at 1.7, 5:4, volted up my memory to the max my mb can do, boost up my htt to 230mhz, run 3dmark03 and then crashes, wut can i do? o yeah and my memory are running 2-3-3-6 but wouldnt the timings not matter because i am running them at 5:4 anyways? plzzz help me out thnx
 
judging by the rig in your sig (hardy har har), do you really need to overclock any farther anyways? What game could possably need more power? Also, I would stil bet its PCI lock if its crashing it 3Dmark, regardless of where it happens...could also be ram timings, but with the ratio its set at I doubt it....couldnt hurt to try
 
To lock the AGP/PCI bus on the K8NPro, overclock the FSB in the bios. If you use clockgen to OC, or the Gigabyte Easy Tune 4 program (which lies about the AGP/PCI bus being locked, clockgen shows it is not unless you OC first in the bios), be sure you still OC in the bios by at least 1 mhz, otherwise the AGP/PCI speeds in the bios will raise along with the FSB. Unfortunately, neither the bios nor Easy Tune 4 can change the stepping. Clockgen can, though, and it's free if you don't know about it. Check out the write up at ocfaq.com on the k8npro for the specifics.

As far as OC'ing goes, it's a pretty noticable difference. Using a K8NPro and a 3200+, I scored around 19,950's 3dmark2001, with a 20mhz OC (220 x 11) I scored 22,100's. Unfortunately, the OC was not stable with prime95, although it put up a good fight.

What core 3200+ do you have? You can tell by your stock stepping. If it is 10 x 200, you've got a clawhammer, if it's 11x200 you've got a newcastle. My newcastle doesn't seem to want to go over 2.2ghz, although I can lower the stepping and OC the FSB (still working on my peak with a new DFI Lanparty nf3 250gb, currently stable at 10x220 and pushing it before dropping my multiplier).
 
it's a clawhammer and how would i go about changing the multiplier? i am new at that? and does changing the multiplier affect the pci/agp locks? and o yeah are you sure u got the gigabyte k8n pro cause it doesn't have a pci lock, only agp.. and if i change the multiplier wut would i change it to? i would like to reach 2.3ghz
 
yea, I'm sure I had the gigabyte k8npro (still have it in a box on my table), and I'm sure about the AGP/PCI lock. Test it yourself. Open up easy tune 4 and clockgen at the same time, use the Get Values in clockgen to check your current AGP/PCI bus speeds. OC using easy tune by about 10 mhz, and you'll see the agp/pci bus speeds increase in the clockgen utility, even though they show no increase in easy tune 4.

then, restart the system, go into the bios and change the fsb from 200 to 201. Repeat the above steps and you'll notice whether oc'ing in Easy Tune 4 or clockgen, the pci and agp bus speeds now stay the same. Remember to use Get Values from Clockgen to see what the current values are after the OC. I'm not sure that it doesn't affect the harddrives though (whehter SATA or ATA).

To clear something up about the above process, you are only overclocking by 1mhz on the fsb in the bios, the rest of the oc'ing is done from windows. I am aware that there is no PCI lock in the bios, don't worry about it there.

The stepping is the CPU to FSB ratio, on the clawhammer it is 10. Changing the stepping can allow you a more stable OC because it lets you increase the FSB without necessarily increasing the mhz speed of the processor. In my case, my stock settings are 200 fsb and a multiplier of 11 for a stock speed of 2.2 ghz (newcastle core) by 11 x 200 = 2200mhz or 2.2ghz. I can OC my fsb to 220 and drop the multiplier by 1, so I get 220 x 10 = 2200 mhz or 2.2ghz. Faster FSB and memory mean faster performance.
 
boot at 201 FSB and use clockgen. Thats the only way to lock the PCI I belive.
 
ok so i went in the bios set fsb to 200, ran clockgen and the pci went up, but then i went back and put it at 201, and the pci does not overclock with the fsb, is there any other programs i can use to be sure that the pci does lock? (besides clockgen)
