I am helping a friend of mine reinstall windows on a compaq. The problem is, the motherboard is made by compaq, and they don't offer a download for individual drivers. He dosen't want to use the compaq disk to reinstall he wants to use his copy of windows. We managed to find all of his drivers except for his chipset driver. Does he have to have the chipset driver, or does Windows install it automatically? There is no listing for "chipset" in the device manager, so how do I know if the chipset driver was properly installed?

Thanks

How about opening up the case and looking at the various chips on the motherboard? Or Googling the model number of the machine itself?

Windows will install a chipset driver itself and you should be ok (check your device manager to see if you have any uninstalled devices). You can get the chipset info from CPU-Z. Download that (if you haven't already), and other the Mainboard section it should tell you what chipset you are using. I used this method to do the exact same thing with an old Compaq I had. It was a KT133a, so I went to Via and downloaded the Hyperion drivers that went with the chipset. I installed those over the Windows ones and it worked fine.
