I am thinking about getting a Canon EOS 20D to replace my Sony F717. What are your opinions? I have already read some of the opinions on other review sights....

I like mine. Alot.

Just remember that DSLRs require post processing to get the most out of the picture.

 I think your going to regret that statement.

 uh, why? Almost all pictures out of my 20D look better after adjusting levels and applying some USM in photoshop. As far as I know, this is common practice for Digital SLR cameras. Pictures out of my sony camera look pretty sharp and vivid straight from the camera compared to the 20D. After they are ran through photoshop though, the 20D pictures look spectacular as long as I do my part at exposure time.

That's because, more likley than not, the sony is doing alot of in-camera processing. (sharping, contrast, and saturation)

Darktiger: Remember that the camera body will be the least of the investments you'll make... you'll want to buy good glass, maybe good flash, maybe a good tripod, a bag/backpack, maybe a monopod, etc. Make sure you're prepared to make the jump to SLR.... it's a lot bigger jump than most think....

yeah, I know. I was just expanding on my earlier statement about post processing, since for some reason I was going to regret it.

No kidding about the "jump". It was a big jump for me, and I already had a EOS film body and a decent lens collection. After the 20D came the vertical grip, 580EX, 35mm f/2, better tripod, etc.

I agree with SidewinderX. The body is just the beginning. Once you get it, your get addicted like a crack whore. You HAVE to have better/more lenses.

Nice to know Iam not the only one around here with the 35mm F2.0 Canon lens. Everyone seems to settle for the cheap 50mm F1.8.

The 35 f/2.0 is probably one of the next lenses on my list. The 50 is too narrow, plus I've been having some focusing issues with it.

I never had one but I read about both and decided on the 35mm.

1) Wider
2) glass not plastic
3) MF ring is not a pain in the ass
4) lens does not extend when it focuses
5) Supposedly one of the sharpest lens there are

For only $150 more, it will not break anyone's wallet. For those reasons above, I chose it over the 50mm.

The only problem is that I do not have the camera yet so I can't play with the new toy. I ordered the camera from Dell a few weeks ago but they have been on backorder for a while. The ETA is Monday so I will keep my fingers crossed. I should get it the next day if it ships out of Austin.
