Cannot watch DVD on FPD2185W using DVI

I have the FPD2185W Gateway monitor - hooked to my 7800GT through the DVI. Everything on the system is fine - played some COD2 as well. No issues. If I put in a DVD, once the DVD starts, the screen blanks. It doesn't lose the signal, it is like it cannot display it. Pretty much like the monitor going out of range. I get a flashing dark gray screen with a line across the top. I have the resolution set to 1680x1050. Also, I am not even running the DVD in full screen - just in a window. I know it has to be with the new monitor, because DVD's play fine on the old 17" CRT I have, and I also just watched the same DVD (LOTR TT) on my Sony 24" Widescreen CRT yesterday and that worked fine too.

Anyone see this problem? Am I doing something wrong? I have many years as a PC tech and haven't ever seen anything like this. Once it happens, I have to down the PC (power hold) to get the picture to come back on the monitor.

heh, those are both horrible outdated DVD players.

Check out these programs

Media Player Classic
Zoom Player
TheaterTek

I will try it, but it seems that there is a real problem if the same exact thing happens with more than one program. Maybe not. I will try this tonight and see. I really like the monitor, so I need to figure this out. I know the Dell 2407 is supposed to hit their website - maybe today, so if that happens I may order it and return this one to BB.

Then how come I can play DVD's if I hook up my 24" Sony CRT? Same movie - different result, only change is the monitor...

Sounds to me definitely the monitor. Some models of 2185w has some trick dealing with the DVI input. How long did you own it for? If the problem persists u better return it ASAP.

More testing:

Installed PowerDVD - no good
Tried a second DVI cable - no good
Tried using the VGA cable - no good
Tried using DVI on second card port - no good
Tried another monitor w/ VGA - works

So, it is the monitor for sure, but I am stumped on what could make it not play a DVD using either DVI or VGA, but everything else is fine. Totally weird.

Also, when on VGA, the screen would go blank like it did w/ the DVD, except for a strip which told me that the OS is fine because I could see my mouse moving. It was only the size of the bottom toolbar though - but it was not showing the toolbar - part of the wallpaper...

REALLY ODD

Any of you video savvy technophile what to guess what could break on a monitor that only stops it from showing DVD content (even in a window) through both VGA and DVI? I would sure like to know.

I am returning the monitor... but after I use it for a week (and get a chance to get the Dell in the mail - or something else). Also Oblivion comes out in 5 days... :)
