Cannot own PS3 games?

If Sony really does this, its not gonna matter how good their games are....

If Sony does this, they are gonna be giving themselves cement feet. All they need is Nintendo and Microsoft to toss them into the river...

Perhaps, but there are countless used book stores, pawn shops, and other places that sell pre-owned games. I doubt most of them would care much about license restrictions, and I'm fairly certain that Sony couldn't prevent them from selling without some kind of security on the games themselves.

I've been a Sony supporter for a long time (even after their terrible press conference and price annoucement) but not even strong third party support is going to keep me in their court for long. A fan can only tolerate being shat upon so many times.

That's a possibility but then again they might take the route the music industry took and sue as many of these small pawns as possible. It is a shame Sony had me at hello with the PS1 with the PS2 I felt cheated now I'm doing the 3D funky monkey with Microsoft.

I know this is pretty unlikely, but would/could it be possible that a tiny part of this might revolve around the concept that after a game is sold the first time, 2nd and subsequent sellings of the product don't put a penny in the pockets of Sony and/or the game companies?

I think we can all agree we like sony alittle less after this. Some more than others I'm sure. I do wonder when they will be forced to listen to consumers again.

Why? Do you actually believe this BS rumor is truth?

Given that there is a link to a patent and that it is held by sony. Yes, yes I do

The relevant patent seems to be 6,816,972. Filed on April 17, 2000 and issued on November 9, 2004. Search for the patent number here, painful to direct-link patents at uspto.gov.

Patents mean very, very little. They routinely grant patents for things that don't work. The main purpose for a patent is to grab as much as you can so you can sue the pants off of somebody that comes close to what patented. This is also a great way to make quick money to prop up your failing business.

Because of such, the USPO to prevent abuse. And because con-artists get patents on their free energy devices and start pandering.

Well, Microsoft actually does those bad things. Sony's critics just seem to be blindly believing one outlandish rumor after another.

Sony installed a rootkit on my computer because I play audio CD's in it. And when Sony got caught their response was "Not Our problem". The same thing when every Sony product has problems, the typical Sony response is "It was meant to do that. Besides. You should know better then to trust us." No telling what hidden surprises the PS3 has on it.

nice way of summing it up :p

You know what, I havent even read one post from this thread but I hope there are people that are going to do what I am. A full boycot of Sony....

End of the line for me.

Uh last I checked MS hadn't tried to rootkit my system to "secure" it...

While i don't belive they will impliment such a restriction in hardware or software, i have no problem beliving that retailers will be told that their shipments of new games will be cutoff, delayed or restricted if they deal in used PS3 titles. This also has the benefit of not making the above link a lie.

Many of those retailers may not care as much as we might think they should.. Retailers make little or next to nothing on consoles and on new game sales.. Except for the initial release of the console, and big hit games, where they get to charge well above retail..(Of course that don't take into account games and systems that have gone stale on their shelves, that they have to discount to get rid of, sometimes at a loss) .. Meanwhile used game sales are a mega-cash cow.. Buy it for $5-$15 sell it for $20-$30+..

Mom and pop rental stores and other places that only sell used games would reap one hell of a benefit from this , if true, and if places like EB copitulate.. They would no longer have to compete with EB and others for the used game dollars..

Sony is just digging themselves deeper into a hole they can't get out of...cmon now $600 for the console and you can't buy 2nd hand games? Fk that, son.

Wii for the win.

The idea of them using eraseable media on the disk very unlikely. If they did that, and your PS3 died, your software would cease to work. Sony would then be forced to replace all of your disks.

I seriously doubt this will happen, but if I'm sure it'd thrill MS if it was true.

If Sony was going this route, it wouldn't happen in the first couple years of the PS3's life. They would handle it like they (and the other studios) are going to handle the HDCP/ICT/HDMI issue, releasing games without this patented single-owner process for a while, letting people get "hooked" on their awesome new console. Then, once they've gotten the things into people's homes, they can drop the no-resale hammer with subsequent games, with the first being some game that everyone wants (ideally, a Final Fantasy, Metal Gear or GTA title). <---Disclaimer: The preceding is, of course, all speculation.

Me they already lost with their pricing. I'm sure the hardware is technically worth the price, but it's not worth it to me when compared to the other two consoles (especially since Nintendo has all but confirmed that the Wii will be released at US$200). I'll consider a PS3 after some serious price cuts (and enjoy many used games ;)), but I'm not so enamored of particular franchises that I feel compelled to buy any console ASAP. Heck, I just got Psychonauts a month ago and I'm sure my Xbox, PS2 and Gamecube could hold me over another 3 or 4 years if I felt really cheap. :)

Well, there's nothing stopping Microsoft from doing this as well, they 'lose' just as much to used sales as sony does.

Though, from a practical standpoint, neither approach would work.

Everyone read that link before posting.

Glad to see they are saying it won't be there but my faith is sony's word is... low.

This is a bullshit rumor resurfacing from a year ago saying that Sony was patenting technology to pull this kinda crap. Sony acknowledged the patent/concept but denied the implementation. Some M$ !!!!!!s are dredging it up again, probably because they're upset over the denial of a 360 price cut.

This is old news. Keep up with the gaming world outside of PC sites and you may be able to process this kind of thing more accurately in the future.

Great, another FUDster.

Sony <> Sony BMG. Different company, different management. Holy crap, get out in the world a bit. Generally, at any time "Most of Sony" isn't friendly towards to the "Other Most of Sony" (e.g. Sony Computer Entertainment is the black sheep of the family, surviving only because it can be a cash cow). It's an entirely different cross-corporate structure.

That article really doesn't have anything I would consider to be hard core facts yet. Right now, it's more or less speculation. I don't give a rats ass about Sony, but I doubt this would happen as Sony just isn't that stupid. Maybe i'll be wrong, but a policy like this would just make things worse than it already is for Sony.

Is this rumor based on the same news story that broke over a year ago about a patent from 1998?

Are you trying to tell me that if he goes out into the world he will learn that sony is different from sony BMG?

I'm sorry but i would bet my computer that that isn't common knowledge to the general public.

That's a lot of righteous indignation considering folks in this thread were already doubting that Sony would actually do it. The problem is that it's not that far-fetched. Publishers (most recently in my recollection, Mark Rein of Epic Games) have said before that they hate the secondhand market with a passion and that they would like to have laws banning the sale of used games (new laws would be necessary because the RIAA already tried and failed to end the secondhand CD market).

I'm sure that, for now, this rumor is just that. But, the idea that Sony (or Microsoft or, for that matter, Nintendo) would implement a no-resale plan isn't ridiculous at all. If they thought they could get it done with minimal consumer backlash, they'd do it tomorrow. In fact, after all three consoles have been out for a year or two I could even imagine all three companies deciding together to get it done - after all, the scheme described in the patent isn't necessarily dependent on hardware in the consoles but rather is a software solution that could be implemented on a per-game basis.

"Righteous indignation." Er, yes. Whatever -- obviously those weren't the people I was talking about.

isn't this disbunked already?

I don't think there's even a basis for repeating these rumors. They are reported as having come from "anonymous retail sources", which is vague enough to include even lowly Gamestop employees.

Wow, I can't believe all the shit this company is doing to this market. You never had to worry about this back in the days of Nintendo, Sega and cardtridges. This is disgusting. Tsk, Tsk Sony. I hope rumors stay rumors..

Nintendo spent a lot of money trying to stop cart rentals and second hand sales.
