hello all
heres the thing
i bought an xfx hd5770 today. i had an nvidia 8800gts on the pc. so i uninstalled the drivers and replaced the 8800 with the new 5770 and also put the 8800 to the second pcie-2 x16 (asus p64 deluxe v2 mobo) slot to use it for physX.
I installed 8.9 drivers and rebooted. when i got into windows (7 ultimate x64) i got artifacts, black screens and message "display driver stopped responding and has recovered" poppin up all the time, so i closed the pc, removed the 8800 and restarted. but the same...
so i uninstalled the drivers and installed the 9.10 and restarted, but when i got into windows it was like i hadnt installed anything.. low res, games not playable, CCC not available. i retried but with the same results.
then i removed 5770 and put 8800 back in. installed the latest drivers, but installation got stuck at some point for a very long time so i stopped it and rebooted so when i got into windows everythin seems to b working ok.. games, resolution, video playback, nvidia control panel etc..

whats wrong? what am i doin wrong? was there a conflict when i used both cards? is there a hardware problem with hd5770?

thx

i just want to know 2 things.. is there a chance putting 5770 + 8800 together that may have damaged either one or the mobo? and if not is format gonna make the drivers work ok?

There have been reports that moving from an nvidia based gpu to an ati based gpu has some issues. namely being that nvidia drivers leave a small DOS attack on your computer that will deny the install of an ati cards drivers.

Possibly the other forums that covered this subject said that was the only way they could fix it. yeah i know nvidia has been screwing a lot of people about this stuff, But now they are preventing us from moving to ati. if i recall this goes under the anti competivite laws. where a company tries to prevent sales of their rivals products.

you can read about the law here:http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Competition_law

actually when windows 7 detect the 5770 it says that standard vga adapter driver is installed..is this normal? i mean i then continue and install the actual ati drivers? or do i have to disable the auto installing and do it manually?

From what i hear windows 7 comes pre loaded with recognition software for system devices like that. it just creates generic drivers to get the card working at the base level but you could try installing the catalyst drivers if you want. My actual knowledge of 7 is almost non existent as i still use XP. but i do pick up a few facts from actual users.

i guess format is the only option which im not inteded to do...so only option is to sell it..pitty :(

i wouldn't sell it. Why do you not want to reformat your system. Is it because you don't have the know how to do so. or is it because you don't want to waste the time doing so. if its either why don't you take it to best buy or some Comp store the has a maintenance department and hav them do the work.

of course i know how, i built the system myself.. and ive done many formats in many pcs/operating systems..thing is ive done already 3 of them the last month.. dont wanna waste time and energy AGAIN reinstallin from scratch, windows, programs, games, setting the system and progs etc :(

I dont think the mobo drivers have anything to do with the GPU drivers, but you can try. Personally i created a save state disk for my comp so if i mess up i just pop it in and instant reset. really saves a lot of time(2 hours for me). you don't even need too burn too a disk , you can put the image on an external HDD and load it from there. although the question is finding the proper Back up utility for your needs

no no mobo is asus p6t deluxe v2 (x58 chispset)

hmm explain a bit more to me pls.. ok lets say i make a backup of my main disk right now with acronis.. still this backup would contain the nvidia files that mess up ati drivers..

the error that you describe of artifact and windows driver stop working is the same issue im having with my 5770 from Sapphire. Im going to format it soon, because it seems that is the last thing i can do before RMA the card :S or I could also wait for new drivers :S

To be more precise create the backup after the you reformat. install all the drivers including the ati ones. then make the backup. Label the backup something like ATI build backup or something. then from now on you just use the backup when you wish too format to an ati build.

It is what i did. Although last ati i used was HD2600. but that shouldn't matter since the system wont do anything with the GPU until you install drivers that support it. so you can use this backup even long after you replace your 5770 with a newer one

Also it might help if you make the backup after you get all the drivers up to date and install all windows updates. forget any programs that aren't immediately needed and install them later down the road.

hello again

i formated but again the SAME!!! ati drivers just wont b installed.. im sure im using the right ones from http://game.amd.com/us-en/drivers_catalyst.aspx for windows 7 64bit! i run the setup but it only installs the ati catalyst install manager, hdmi audio driver, microsoft visual c++, catalyst registration, amd drag n drop.. only these..

hardware problem?

Looks like the 9.10 do not support 5770's?

Anyone else know about this?

P.S. yap looks like thats it. You formatted for nothing it seems like :/
Just use the drivers on the CD you got with the card

hi dashit and thx. 9.10 are indeed not supported by 57xx series so i formated again and installed 8.9 wih success but i get the artifacts and black screens and "display driver stopped responding and has recovered" messages again..
u think by using both ati (primary) and nvidia (for physX) cards as mentioned at my 1st post in the beginning of the whole story may have damaged the 5770? (the nvidia is fine by the way)

Why are you using the 8.9 drivers?....they dont even support the 5770?

I know for a fact the 8800gt for physx wont work unless you hack the driver (which is found in this forum somewhere).

But why are you trying to use the 8.9 drivers?....try using the ones you got on the CD disc when you bought the video card.

No those 9.10's won't work, you should have gone through the selector tool (I suggest bookmarking this: http://ati.amd.com/support/driver.HTML ) which would have pointed you... here.

The 5700 is a bit too new for the cat 9.10's. It'll be fully supported in the 9.11 and newer drivers. I'm using the ones from the link I posted instead of the catalyst 9.11 openCL beta's because the beta breaks AF in Titan Quest. I haven't seen any other problems with them though, so that's another option.

Yoda thats exactly the drivers i installed right now. they install everything fine but then when i reboot i get the artifacts and crashes-lock ups/black screens and "display driver stopped responding and has recovered" messages.. and all these on a fresh 1 hour ago formated system with windows 7 ultimate x64 (release build-november integrated)..with nothin else installed except the latest intel x58 chipset drivers (latest bios mobo too)
u think its a hardware matter?

Nothing should have been damaged in any way by having two different cards in the system. When you install the ATI drivers a reboot shouldn't even be needed. They'll just finish installing and you'll have a windows screen and ATI CCC should be in the tray, all ready to go.

The driver not responding issue isn't one I've had to deal with on this end. The last time I had that issue was years ago with a bad MSI kt266 motherboard and radeon 7000. I'd try removing the nvidia card and any drivers it uses first. Then motherboard bios updates or chipset drivers. Disable any PCI-e "link state power management" stuff in the control panel's power options. If none of that works cross your fingers and wait for newer drivers or RMA the card and see what happens.

nvidia is not in the system at all. im using the ati only. i only tried this -both cards- configuration the 1st time when i had bought the ati. since then ive removed the nvidia. motherboard bios is the latest, mobo chipset too..

Im at the same position warlord, im planning on RMA but first I will reinstall everything from sratch too, even it didnt work for you, if it doesnt for me then it is either drivers or hardware. Next step will be to try it in a friends pc, if it fails it would be drivers or hardware related, if it doesnt it is my mobo or psu which i doubt!

I found that it is something with the low 157core frequency@2d, if we can find a way to increased that lower frequency, maybe the problem is over. And sometimes I get a strange frecuency lock with the 9.11betas that prevents the problem to reproduce. Yesterday i had the card running heaven benchmark for 6 hours and no problem or artifacts were shown. But when it is idle or web browsing etc. it crashes like you say.

hmm can u investigate this low core frequency a bit more and inform me if u have any new?
my crashes/artifacts occure like all the time..not randomly or after some mins.. its like every 5-10 seconds..

Mine is random and i can last some minutes, sometimes 10, sometimes 40 without problems only at 2D, have you tried playing hd videos or gamming?? What ive find so far is that with catalyst 9.11b and after playing hd videos for 5min or more approx, the frequency gets locked at 400core and 900mem forever! only a reboot will reset it to normal, and at this state, it doesnt reproduce the error. Last night, I installed the cd drivers , ran heaven benchmark (no error), and later today I will check if any errors happened during the day when my family uses it the most. I will do some more test, and like Ive said, i will install everything from scratch,. For me I think is a driver issue. but yours seems like a hardware, or maybe my hardware it is not as screw as yours. Have you try it in another pc? Because after all youve done that will be the last thing to do before RMA , imo.

ive read it all, i agree with the one telling to rma the card, the card should work at 157/300 for power savings, it is a feature that donest work in our hardware. But another one said it was driver and someone at ATI told him that, so maybe we just have to wait, if next driver or 9.12 betas do solve this.

i raised the clocks like the thread says (creating new profile and setting new 2d clocks) and the artifacts stopped, but i do get the full screen lines after like 5 mins.. so no solution.. when r the new drivers gonna b released? the 9.11 betas did nothin but the same for me.. so 9.12 seem pretty far.. ill have to RMA..

it seems that this case is for RMA, just that mines is a little less severe than yours :S, thats what happens to early adopters lol

so u think its hardware related and not driver?

yes but what if the replace card has the same issues? should i go for another manufacturer? like asus? i have xfx.. im thinkin bout just goin to nvidia again and buy gtx260 216core

Yes, I think so, I spoke with Sapphire guys and told me to send it, or to try out in another PC. What are your full system specs? At the end we can do two things, wait for drivers or RMA the card, I think is a driver /hardware problem, like if some not all of the 5770 are faulty but may be corrected through special drivers, though im not sure i dont have much experience on that field.

9.11 will b released 25 november..im not gonna wait till then. so RMA tomorrow..
i have i7 920 cpu, 6gb gskill trident 2000mhz ram, intel x25-m SSD, enermax infinity 720W, asus p6t delux v2 mobo. everythin stock..

i had a 4870 single GPU die. It showed 2D apps with the MS standard VGA driver just fine, but the ATi driver would just not install.
