I wanted to get a dslr before I went on vacation and have picked a few Cannons and Nikon. I would like to be able to swap any lens i get with my film camera so i have been leaning toward a Cannon.

Here are the ones i have been looking at.

Canon EOS 450D / Digital Rebel XSi
Canon EOS 500D / Digital Rebel T1i
Nikon D5000

I was lean toward the XSi since best buy has a deal right now with a few extras like a second len.

Is there enough of a Benefit to getting the T1i or even the d5000? The only big difference i saw what the higher pixel count and the video. Any deals I should be looking for? I have read a few places saying the XSi may drop in price soon so i am willing to wait if its worth it.

This is more general advice, but whichever brand you choose, spend less on the body and more on the lens. Any body made within the past 3 years will take great photos. You'll do more for your image quality by buying a generation old body (XTi, 30D, D50, D80) and putting the money you save towards a sharper lens with a larger aperture.

what fugu said. and if i may add something else, the best thing you can do is go to a photo store where you can hold all those cameras in your hands, and see for yourself which one feels the best to you! play with the menus, get a good feel about what you like and don't like.

Can you swing to a 40D? Bigger body, better grip, faster burst rate (5fps), and better iso noise control. And the body is considered a pro-sumer DSLR whereas the X series are considered entry level.

Well i took the weekend to think it over and now I'm pretty sure I would get the XSi from Amazon. I really want to get the t1i for the video but dont think i can swing it and i would need to pick up a len as well.

If you have a Canon film camera, what is it and what lenses do you have? If you have decent Canon AF lenses already, I'd go ahead and get the t1i. Xsi is also a quality camera though.

Its my girlfriends so im not sure what model is is but its nothing super special. I'm pretty sure its just the kit lens. Really torn because the XSi is a good deal but the t1i is new, has has some video and i'll be keeping the body for several years picking up a lens when i get into it more....

If you really find yourself getting enthused about photography, you won't keep this first body very long, I promise you. The XSi build quality (along with all of the other Rebels) is severely lacking in several ways (plastic skeleton instead of magnesium, cheaper plastics, smaller, less ergonomic). I wouldn't bother getting the T1i. Get an XSi at MOST if you're going with a Rebel, and get better lenses. I'd really suggest starting with a 40D, though, if you can swing it.

If you're enthusiastic about photography, you'll get new lenses and lights before a new body.

I vote for XSi as a body although I do prefer Nikon's cheaper lenses...

You should hold them both in your hands before you choose. It really is a very personal decision. When I made the choice to shoot Nikon (almost 10 years ago now!) I found that the Nikon bodies just plain felt better in my hands. The Nikon body felt like it was made for my hands while the Canon felt awkward. You hear a lot of people talk about it but it's hard to understand unless you experience it.

So I dunno if you're serious about photography you'll get to know the camera before you choose. If you're not that serious about it get the XSi. It produces better images than the Nikon entry levels.
