Canadian Usage-Based Internet Billing Explained

So they going to pay for the spam i get on their email account?

Who is going to pay for the ad's i don't want to see plastered all over my web pages?

Sure you can use ad-block, but does it block it before the data hits your computer?

assholes.

I said the same thing on facebook we need an Egypt level event against the CRTC and top two communications providers in ontario for any of this shit to change. Cause right now they are bending us over at will and not using any ky.

Well the gov't is looking into it. One MP called the CRTC "a short order cook for the media barons."

My problem is with Shaw dropping the cap from 125 to 100 and then charging overages after I get used to the limit.

Isn't it like the cable COs charging by the TV show or how much you watch? Imagine that...

Reminds me of that article a few years back where some slow ISDN/DSL provider in Africa was being bitched at because a homing pigeon with a USB thumbdrive attached to its leg was faster.

Canada the next government to fall to protests???? ;)

Nah. Most of us are too lazy to get up off our chesterfields while drinking beer and watching hockey inside our igloos. Then there's that annoying issue of having to put on our parkas, don a toque, lace up our mukluks and strap on our snowshoes to venture outside in this snowstorm that came from Texas and dogsled the 220 miles from Toronto to Ottawa.

:p

Walks nervously a room. Looks up ans says "My alias is Yakk, and I live in Canada."

Think we'll need a UBB support Group.

The major ISP's cannot price themselves out of business here, it's called an oligopoly. Backed by possible government legislation at that.

I guess I'll have to subscribe to 2 SSD's a month.

Y.

With the massive profits per-capita this will generate, don't think ISP's in other countries won't take notice.

I was just taking a look at Shaws offerings and noticed that they had lowered my monthly cap from 150GB per month down to 100GB. I don't remember ever receiving any notice of this. 150GB a month is already way too low and then to reduce it even more, while constantly raising the monthly fee is just really frustrating. Sadly, where I live I only have 2 options, with my second option being more expensive per month with a smaller cap.

The Tea Party can claim the rights to the fact that they're the ones that got the Bush Tax Cuts renewed, not Obama since he originally wanted to let it expire back to Clinton levels which even the poor would be paying taxes. Spare me that bullshit that Obama would have kept his promise of not raising taxes on the <250K income bracket because he was going to originally blame it on the Republicans for not working with him but thankfully he can't use that card anymore. You're going to come up with a bunch of bullshit to try and counter me with your Slolbermann (oh right, he got fired!) rhetoric.

So contrary to your assertions otherwise you don't give a crap about deficits. Thank you for clarifying there.

If you really do care about deficits or anything other than getting as much as you can and screw everyone else please provide me with three substantive things that you would cut which would bring things in line. Preferably things that wouldn't have the underprivileged and elderly kicking off en masse.

Either you can cut down the corporations to stop the corruption or you can cut down the government. The government is a sword that is wielded by the rich and powerful, including your beloved celebrities who make more and employ less than most "evil" corporations. The question is would you rather blunt the sword or cut off the arm. If you'd rather cut off the arm, move to North Korea where there's no evil corporations to hurt you, just the loving and warm government that does everything so great.

If you'd like to see what corporations in the absence of government interference look like, look towards China or look up the history surrounding company towns in the U.S.

Government tends to be the only thing powerful enough to stop such abuses, whatever libertarian fantasies you may entertain. Speaking personally I'm in favor of returning to the original concept of corporations which is that they were of limited duration and formed for a specific and narrow purpose.

Infinite lifespans and ever increasing wealth (thanks in good part to the tax policies you argue in favor of BTW) may have some good sides, but the bad sides outweigh them as I see it.

Oh and I have no idea where you got the bit about celebrities-you know what they say about assumptions-but if you want to create jobs the facts show that a higher marginal tax rate on the rich does it a whole lot better than a lower one.

I'll make you even more money on the deal, instead of throwing away your SSD you can ship it to me (I'll cover costs) and I'll even pay you $3 and 99 cents per drive ;)

You are missing the point. The point here is that Canada used to have unlimited internet like much of the USA. Now Canada is having rediculous bandwidth caps put into place with rip off overages.

Your analogy about downloading to a hard drive doesnt make any sense or counter-sense to this whole problem.

When you mention people paying to download something that is called an "Internet Subscribtion" whcih used to be unlimted for a monthly fee. Now they pay the same or more monthly fee and get about 85% less capacity until they cap the user.

The point of the article here and the photo is that with the new prices in place it would actually be cheaper for a company to install 160GB of data, say 12 PC games that you would buy online and ship them to your house directly. Afterwards you could still throw the SSD in the trash can and still pay less than the new pricing would charge for the same amount of data sent over the internet.

That is the point. Canada ISPs are going to price them-selves out of the market.

Price themselves out of what market? They own the market dumb-ass! They can only do this because they dominate the market and all sub-companies rely on them, and they apparently have the politicians in their back pocket. It will be the same in the US. It will just take more time because they have to conglomerate more.
This is just an example of the old skool data streams (cable, video rental, PPV ect..) flexing their muscle. The fact most have their hands in broadband should seal the deal.

There was actually a very significant backlash from the public with the 200000+ petition (keep in mind Canada has 1/10th the population of the US for perspective). The NDP was against it from the beginning. The Conservatives seemed to start wavering on the issue by saying they would reexamine it. With the Liberals also coming out firmly against it finally, this probably really put the Conservatives on the spot about this.

With Shaw they allow you to go over your limit for two months. After that, they will tell you on your bill that you are over your limit, give you a link to their website where you can monitor your daily usage ( it is usually updated 2-4 days late... ), give you 60days to correct your high usage and if not, then they will make you pay the 1-2$'s a GB. If I was you, I would switch to Telus's plans, you can get 250GB for 50$ compared to Shaw's 50$ for 100GB and with Telus you get faster speeds.

Also on Shaw, you can purchase 250GB for 50$, which made me laugh when I seen it on their site.

Nah. Most of us are too lazy to get up off our chesterfields while drinking beer and watching hockey inside our igloos. Don't forget curling.

Wow a conservative made a decision which will benefit the majority of Canadians .... must be an election on the horizon.

Au Contraire. I do give a crap about the deficit however if you look deficit comparison during the Bush period compared to now, the Obama Administration skyrocketed the budget base line to 22% and they refuse to decrease that down to the normal 18% which we're used to normally. There was a huge noticeable difference during the last administration where tax revenue was consistently rising over time closing the deficit. The power to tax is the power to destroy and that still holds true today which also comes in the form of printing more money. Nice try. Your shit doesn't fly with me.

I am canadian, and i have a limit of 60gb up or down. I always scratched my head when i heard you guys had unlimited bandwith and more than decent speed than i have.

I love the CRTC... they protect me for being like the US... with more freedom.

what are you whingeing about? thats the way its been here in oz for donkeys. the scary thing is the TB and half TB plans now available here (things have improved) are well and truly in front of the new UBB plans that seem to have cropped up over there.

it feels weird having that be the case - the reverse of just a few years ago. also most our ISPs throttle/shape once you hit your limit (so you can still leech, just slowly) - very few charge for overage

put it this way there arent really any 25 GB/mo plans these days, as the major isps here are heading quickly for 'unlimited' or 3digit base plans, if not already there. ive seen one ISP charging $3 per GB over - but thats once you hit 200GB. all the rest are no limit or shaped.... those ISPs over there are charging like a wounded bull by comparison (starting at 25 GB!! /jawdrop)

hope they grow some sanity over there, and fast. cant be good having us aussies show you up after having you laugh at our ... ummm lamearse? offerings for many years :p

please provide me with three substantive things that you would cut which would bring things in line. Preferably things that wouldn't have the underprivileged and elderly kicking off en masse.
give me things to cut that is inline with my political belifes and I'll show you why my belifes are so good.
The things that need to be cut are the overspending on the welfare tit suckers and the SS/medicare crap. Raise the retirement age to 75 and stop spending insane amounts of money trying to keep people alive for an extra couple of weeks. You'd be amazed what a difference it would make.

Taxes are on profits, not revenues so by definition if they weren't profitable they wouldn't be paying taxes. Do you listen to yourself?

Oh and the top marginal tax rate in Canada for personal income is 29%, which is actually lower than the top marginal rate in the U.S. It's amazing what having a decent single-payer system and not having a massively bloated military can do for you.

Payroll taxes are taken regardless of profit.

http://www.cra-arc.gc.ca/tx/ndvdls/fq/txrts-eng.html

So Canadians pay quite a bit more tax than americans just in federal tax, plus huge provincial tax. Plus the GST. Which includes taxes on things like labor, so when you get your car fixed you pay tax on the part and labor. Not to mention that everything is canada is already more expensive than in the US.

The single payer system is a huge failure, too expensive and the rationing of care is horrible.

I can see a doctor today for anything I want, can you? I can also choose which doctor I can see, can you? (without going to an ER). Lets say i break my arm (again) and need surgery, I can realistically be in the OR monday. How long for you? 4-6 weeks?

You are way off base here...

We are saying that the government should have never got involved in any of the huge deficit spending that has already occurred (starting with bush's bailouts). The American people should not have to pay exorbitant taxes because some temporary political hacks decided to spend like drunken Marxists.

What would I cut? Social Security, no new enrollments. Those who already have made sizeable contributions IMO are entitled to receive what they have paid for. Give individuals better tax incentives to plan for their own retirement. Remove the ability to get 401K loans and withdrawals.

Same with Medicare, get the government completely out of healthcare. Let charity and the free market take care of things. The bleeding hearts that so willingly spend my money can have the choice to voluntarily donate to charities that fund healthcare for those not willing to work for it. Speaking of which, why are those democrats who are so against the bush tax cuts not voluntarily paying the Clinton tax rates? The IRS will take any money someone sends them. So, being the fiscally responsible democrat you claim to be, have you sent any extra money in?

The IRS, switch to the fair tax and abolish the IRS.

I would have to agree with you here for the most part. I don’t think the federal government should be involved with any business to the level that it is today. The federal government has the constitutional duty to regulate interstate commerce; they should do so and nothing more.

Big unions are IMO a bigger threat than corporations.

but if you want to create jobs the facts show that a higher marginal tax rate on the rich does it a whole lot better than a lower one.

Please show me the source of these facts, the "rich" aleady pay the vast majority of taxes collected.

So would you say you are a proponent of taking one persons personal property to give to another?

I can see a doctor today for anything I want, can you? I can also choose which doctor I can see, can you? (without going to an ER). Lets say i break my arm (again) and need surgery, I can realistically be in the OR monday. How long for you? 4-6 weeks?

I live in Canada.
And yes the Taxes here suck.
I will probably pay more in taxes this year then the average American makes in a year :(

To answer your questions,
Yes i can see whatever doctor i want, as nobody forces you to go to any one particular doctor office, or hospital.

Yes, if i break my arm it will be fixed on the same day.
Yes, if i break it again and need surgery it will be fixed again on the same day.
I know someone who had similar issue and he did not wait any time at all.

In fact i am unaware of anyone i know ever complaining about waiting long periods of time for anything medical related. So i have no idea where people come up with these claims, and why most Americans think we have huge lines for all medical services,

Then again i do live in a city that has plenty of hospitals, and doctors offices, paramedics, clinics etc. etc..

Now do Canadians living in small communities outside of major cities have the same options.. the answer there is probably not.. just as i would expect Americans living in small low population communities may also have the same issues.

Any well back to the main topic..
UBB sucks and i hope that the recent CRTC ruling gets reversed, since i use one of the 3rd party ISP's that currently has unlimited data, and i want it to stay that way.

As of today's news, it appears as if it may be reversed.

I'm gonna have to correct you on one thing, the bailouts have nothing to do with Marxsim, Socialism, nor Communism. The bailouts are all about Corporatism, it is the government bowing to corporate interests, just like the CRTC, and soon, the FTC. People love money, and people who already have a fairly large amount, want more money, so they use the government to get what they want.

Charities may be able to help with the absence of Medicaid/Medicare, but don't expect private-run medical facilities to constantly help out of the goodness of their hearts. Remember, in the corporate world, kindness does not always make you money.

The IRS, switch to the fair tax and abolish the IRS.

I agree with you on these points. Unions used to be helpful, but then they became way too powerful, and I definitely don't support the whole "rob/borrow from Peter to pay Paul" thing that has been going on in this country for a LONG while.

Don't get me started on the IRS...

While what the Canadian PM is doing is a nice gesture, do not expect this issue to go away, these ISPs will try to sue the Canadian Govt. if they don't get what they want. It will trickle down here to the US, whether we like it or not.

What do you expect in a country that has "free" health care?

These companies probably have to charge these outrageous rates to remain profitable after being taxed to death.

http://assets.opencrs.com/rpts/RL34175_20070917.pdf

Page 7. Canadians spend less on public health care than Americans do, from what I can tell. Somebody correct me if I am completely wrong here...

I see a doctor when I need to, and have never had to wait. Hell, I can walk in unannouced and see doc within an hour. This health care arguing is completely off-topic, and quite ignorant and baseless.

On topic, it's only a matter of time until the U.S. based telecoms grab for UBB, in some form.

The CRTC is currently being grilled by MPs and giving pathetic excuses for their actions. It seems they're still very interested in maintaining the UBB.

Plain ignorant comment. You clearly have no clue on the financial status of the companies. Profits have risenthroughout the years, not decrease. Rogers alone increased all cable services by $1-3 recently. Basic cable costs $40, I doubt it costs them so much that they've had to raise the price from ~$20 5 years ago for the same service. 10 million subscribes * $2 increase = $20 million/month * 12 = $240 million extra.

On topic, it's only a matter of time until the U.S. based telecoms grab for UBB, in some form.

Well, Verizon has decided to throttle the top 5% heavy users on its network.

We need edit buttons in the news section.

No, the fight against the UBB is not over yet as there is still 60 days for discussion (April 3). Keep in mind, rumours of a possible federal election March 29th. Hm...

Brah, I'm a Canadian who isn't too happy with the shape our country is in right now - but nonetheless, I can't let a lack of truth be passed off as "witty fact" rhetoric (aka "facts" that aren't true, but when strung together, convey a biased opinion about something). I can see any doctor I like tomorrow, and hundreds of my choice right now (11:22pm). If I need emergency surgery for a broken arm, I can be treated the day of the injury. There's lots wrong with my country (and most others) but let's cut the crap.

Clement moped the floor with Finckenstein ... lol.

If I didn't know he was just pandering to the people, because of the upcoming election, I might actually like the guy and the PC.

Shaw Invites Conversation on Internet Usage said:
There’s a passionate discussion happening in Canada right now on the topic of Internet usage allowances. We have been listening to that conversation and have determined that we need to spend time listening to our customers before we roll out any Internet usage billing.

Customers will not receive the planned Internet usage notices on their bills and we will be updating SHAW.CA to reflect the changes. No further action will take place until we have completed the consultation process.

Over the last two years, we have seen the incredible power of open, transparent conversation within the walls of Shaw. We want to reach out to our customers to engage them in that same type of open dialogue on the issue of Internet usage. By inviting our customers to help solve the problem with us, we’ll find the best solution for everyone.

Throughout February and March, our senior leaders will host community discussion sessions in all service areas across Canada. Session dates and times will be posted on SHAW.CA the week of February 14th.

Thank you for your continued passion and commitment.

Well it looks like the fight against UBB is taking a turn for the better.
Last week the CRTC decided to postpone the ruling that Bell and other large ISPs can charge smaller ISPs Usage Based Billing.
That has been halted for 60 days pending review.

Today, Shaw announced that they have decided to halt their plans for UBB until they have had a chance to have a public discussion.
Shaw is not required to do this. The bill that allows them to charge customers still stands, but it's clear that they can see how bad for PR UBB is right now.

I have no doubt that they will implement it again in the future, but they will have a much harder time with it now, an I think they are beginning to realize that.

Well the gov't is looking into it. One MP called the CRTC "a short order cook for the media barons."
My problem is with Shaw dropping the cap from 125 to 100 and then charging overages after I get used to the limit.

Exactly, I'm equally pissed about that. No notice, no price reduction, just quietly reduce the caps prior to kicking off overage fees. It was also interesting to note that their bandwidth usage reports were off by a factor of three--right up until they started gearing up to charge per GB.

he who controls the spice controls the universe, just look how quickly internet, and bandwidth are becoming spcies of their own. i wonder what will be the next commodity to acquire spice status.
