do radeons support vertical spanning? (search turned up hydravision for spanning in general but no specifics), and if vertical spanning is supported does the rotate feature in the driver work with a vertically spanned set?

You can drag the positions of the monitors anywhere you want on the Settings tab of the display properties. As far as rotating them, I don't know since I don't rotate my displays nor do I use Hydravision software since the built in Windows software works just fine

I use UltraMon, and it works great for me. I got it for free, but it seems that the newer version is pay only, with a trial version. Check out version 2.5 at http://www.realtimesoft.com/ultramon/
I think you can still google up version 2.3, which is free.

ultramon only forces taskbar to span the 2 seperate displays, it does help as I want directX / openGL / VMR to work over both displays... my geforce 4 supports spanning but it fails at rotating the resulting spanned set.
