MythTV is a Linux application which turns a computer with the necessary hardware into a digital video recorder, a digital multimedia home entertainment system, or Home Theater Personal Computer. MythTV is free software licensed under the GPL. It can be considered as a free and open source alternative to Tivo or Windows Media Center, although MythTV predates Windows Media Center.

MythTV is oh, so much more than a Tivo. Think of it as a nice interface to connect your TV to your computer.
Front ends for emulators, games, web browsing, music, DVD playing, CD/DVD burning, media playing, etc. And it's very customizable, so your ability and imagination is really what it's limits are.
It's main purpose is to record television like Tivo.
