Can I run with an iPod?

I'm considering buying an iPod, but I'd like to be able to go jogging with the unit. Is this feasible with either the Mini or the 4th gen iPod?

I would recommend the mini (since I have small hands, its easy to fit in them) and some sort of cover, just incase you drop that sucker. A nice rubber sleeve may save the finish from the slightest fall, and there are tons of them out there.

I know that I *can* run with an iPod, the question is, *should* I? Would it damage the unit in any way? If you've done exercise with your iPod, could you please post and tell me how long you've been doing it and if you experienced any problems?

I always run with my ipod. You can use the clip that comes with it(in my case I use the iskin one) and then I attach it to the inside of my sliding shorts so there is a tight fit. I never have had any problems.

i run with my ipod gen2

i run on a treadmil and depending on the pants i wear, i either clip it on my side or i rest it on the bar

i've been doing it that for like 5 months and its still fine.

I pod's are still using Hard drives right? Shock + HDD = bad. But given that they are designed for motion, I doubt you'd kill it in one shot. I'd guess that you'd reduce its lifespan by some amount - but no way to tell how long that is.

I can, however, assure you that the the iPod is not suitable for swimming - being a source of much drag in the water the headphones just don't stay in well. ;)

Been jogging with it for about 4 months, have had the Ipod for 15 months now. No problems.

Ran with the iPod 5 times, it skipped twice. Since it is hard drive based, a drive head crash could ruin your unit (and would not be hard to do).

I think it loads the song into memory then puts the hard to sleep so it doesn't spin
otherwise there would be a lot of rma's i'm sure

the mini uses a smaller (dimension wise) hard drive and is possibly more safe i suppose

Yup, it does. Loads as many songs as it can from a selected playlist I believe.

i believe the mini is flash HDD based, so there arent any moving parts. the mini would be the best option for running w/. though ppl have very little trouble w/ their ipods when running.

i can second this. i fell out a canoe with one in my pocket. killed the backlight, but it eventually started working again after a couple days when everything inside dried out...
apple care didnt mind fixing it though!! best costumer service ever if you ask me.

lol - Pretty cool that the HD survived though.

So now that we know iPod's hate to canoe - does anyone know how they feel about SCUBA? It'd be nice to have something for those long Decompression stops...

The Ipod mini uses a 4gb Hitachi microdrive, which is a small harddrive stuffed into a compact flash card. This means there are still moving parts.

My guess is jogging wouldn't put too much stress on the tiny drives, if you ever hear it skip just stop for a sec so it can re-load into memory... I'm sure they've got some sort of failsafes to keep the hard drive heads safe/healthy over time, just like most modern laptops.

Some more extreme running/action might damage it tho, I wouldn't feel comfortable doing heavy excercise with a hard-drive based player. /shrug Flash-based players come in many a different config these days and they're not too costly, I like the Creative MuVo NX/TX USB-key series. Functional, simple, great battery life, quite tiny.

Considering the fact that Apple makes products specifically for jogging, I would think that it would be pretty darn safe to run with... I own a 4g 20gb ipod as well. Although I think it would be safe, and most likely nothing bad would happen, I just don't find it comforting to take a 350$ HDD with me on runs. Just makes me uncomfortable thinking what could happen to it. ;)
