I am about to upgrade to Windows XP, but will still keep my voodoo 2 video card, has anyone had success with 3dfx cards and Win XP w/ gaming?

Thanks in advance.

I don't know why XP wouldn't detect and install your card, but looking at those system specs, XP is going to eat your system ALIVE:eek:

lol.. with 64mb of ram, your gonna be swapping everything that loads up. its gonna be hell for ya, expect about 10 second delay to just launch your browser.

Nexx and Iconz1,

Do you think going to Windows ME would be a better alternative?

I read somewhere that WIN XP will manage the memory better on slower computers that have less memory?

I can O/C to 450mhz from 400 but I get Prime95 errors after about 45 minutes. Will that help?

Thoughts on the Voodoo 2 and the new O/S?

you can get 3rd party voodoo 2 drivers from www.voodoofiles.com

they will work fine but game compatibilty is kinda shakey. winme is based on the same win95 kernel just like win98 is so as far as memory management, winme isnt any better. if you can get another 128-256mb of ram your system should run decent for normal desktop apps in winxp.

Eelpout,

Windows XP will run pretty sweet on your set up. Since your rig is a little older it will manage the memory so that aplications and games will run at peak performance. Windows XP will also take your 64 mb of ram you have an make it run in "dual data' mode; which in the end will be sweet for you.

That system should score at least 20K in 3DMark01 and about 8k in 3dmark03. Do some benchies and let us know where you stand with the numbers.

What's wrong with you Pirate? That's the kind of crap I'd expect out of someone from Edina, not Burnsville.:D

Anywho, here's the sys. req.- http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/home/evaluation/sysreqs.asp

It basically says....good luck.

EDIT: Sorry Eelpout, but WinME is not a wise choice. The worst Microsoft OS EVER!! Try Linux, it will run fine if you are in the mood for a change.

I am trying to overclock my calculator, can you guys give me a hand? I spliced a class 2 AC adaptor so I have dual power supply's, what else can be done?

I am running a Canon P20-DX

Nexx and Pirate Thanks. With your advice in mind I will go for WinXP and give you an update.

Nexx, I do have a 256 MB stick of PC100 Ram...the reason why I run the 64MB PC133 is so I could overclock better.

Nexx, have you used a Voodoo 2 with Win XP and how did it work out?

Pirate, I will try to benchmark 3DMark2001 hopefully it should increase by 20 pts or so hopefully...

Use Win2k-- it has a lot less bloat and shit, so you'll get a smoother-running system with pretty much all the necessary features of XP.

Honestly, upgrade that machine! I don't see why you're dinking around with bare min specs for WinXP when you can get a considerably faster computer for a few hundred bucks.

Dude....

They're all fuckin with ya, XP wont run for shit on yoru system.

It requires 256mb of RAM at least in its written requirements. Plus, with little to no official support for your video card.

To be honest, you're better off sticking to 98SE, at least until you buy a whole new system

Agreed. I tried runnin xp on an old ass comp i dug out of my closet. It was a cele 733 w/ 64mb of ram and a voodoo3. The thing was horribly slow. I would suggest either getting a new comp, or sticking with 98. If you must use xp, bump that ram up to at least 256.

LOL;)

Ok, let me tell a real story here guys. :)
I had a similar second system like his one.
Celerom 400, 128MB memo pc100, 40GB hd (ok this was a big one because the 10 died), GF2MX PCI.
What i have to say is, this system was hell fine with XP, but it became a LOT better when i put in it another 128 stick.
In the end of the life of this system (i shut it down, but it is still runing fine if a want to, but i got a good offer in a duron 1600 and a Nforce2 with integrated grafics, so bye celerom :) ), i overclocked the celerom to 600 and ir was even better with an FSB of 100, and 256MB of pc100.
It is still a usable and playable 3rd rig.
In your system the oly thing i would do is change the 64 stick to a 256 one and don't bother in overclock, since OS runs fine with 400 MHz and the GPU will hold u in any game anyway.
;)

the worst OS ever was BoB sorry to say :\

and i was under the knowledge that winxp needed 128 to boot.

With all due respect, mow some lawns or shovel some driveways, do what it takes to earn the money to get a new machine.

Ok you will definatly need another 128 Meg ram and probably a BIOS upgrade as your current MB is probably not fully ACPI complient. your video card drivers can be got from the link earlier on.

But just to install your looking at well over a hour and XP will kill your system and don't expect ro be gameing anything new that requires XP.

Memeory management will be poor at best as your machine will have to swap everything out just to load the next program.

If i were you I would install Win98 SE as that's gonna be the best performance your gonna get from your machine. Win ME is very buggy.

I have Installed Win XP on a PIII 450 with 392 Meg ram and it runs fine be it a little slow. However this machine does nothing more than runs MS Office.

Don't even bother running XP on that system. I had XP on a similar system:

400 Mhz AMD K6-2
Some Gainward Mobo
128 MB of PC100
40 GB 7200 RPM Maxtor (had a Quantam Bigfoot in it before, hehe)
ATi Rage Fury Pro

XP ran like total shit. It took 10 mins. to start up, seriously. Just upgrade your system.

lol you guys are cracking me up...

ok...it took 2 hrs to reformat...and now i'm waiting for the SP1 updates to finish installing...it's taken about 1 hour for that so far....after that the security updates...

thx for your support...

long live 440BX chipset.

we'll keep you posted...

Good Stuff Foz2001...

Which is faster...my CPU rig or your car (see your sig)? :)

On my PC that serves as a file server, MP3 player, Emule downloader, etc..I have a Celeron 400 with 384MB RAM. It runs WinXP just fine. When I say fine, I mean serving up files, playing MP3's, browsing the web etc. I haven't tried a single game on it.

Bottom line, it will work for you. It is not going to be any kind of improvement in speed over Win98. If anything, it may actually be slower.

I also installed WinXP on a friends 750 Duron with only 64MB RAM(Didn't know it has so little RAM until we were done). It was slow as hell. Stuck in another 128MB of RAM, and it improved 10 fold.

I'd recommend Win2K for anything past 300mhz with 256MB RAM.

I can't recommend WinXP for anything, really. Unless you can get it cheaper than 2K... The core of the OS is essentially the same, but with 2K I don't have to gut the UI to see it look 'normal.'

Just my .02

EDIT: Oh, yeah, Eelpout, did you know that signatures were supposed to be less than 10 lines? Not that I'm a sig cop, but I figured I'd mention it.

Ok lol...I think my Voodoo 2 went toasty...I was looping 3DMark2001 with it overclocked, and woke up this morning and had the PSoD (not BSoD). Pink Screen of Death lol with checkers?

Anyone ever have this pink screen and is there a way around this?

Agree pretty much. Your system is gonna chug liike you won't believe with XP. The lowest amount of memory I've seen XP run on is 128 and they run like turtles. A P4 -2.0 with 128 meg memory ran like a P200. Save your money on the OS and look at hardware first.

I upgraded one of friends computer with an Asus P2B-F Slot-1 Bx board to a Celeron 1.1GHz Tualatin with a Tualatin Socket to Slot Adapter. Overclocked it to 150FSB @ 1.65GHz . We slapped a Ti-4600 in there for fun and ran 3dmark2k1 and hit 11k :D, The cpu was $40 and the slot adapter was $19 so for $59 it was a nice upgrade from a PII 450. He's running a GF3 TI-200 right now at TI500 speeds, and playing ut2k3 with no problems at 1024x768. Might get a FX5900NU for him and see how she does. Also thinking about picking up a 1.4 Celery and seeing if we can hit close to 2GHz or at least 1.7 or so. LONG LIVE BX!!!! rofl :D

Hey Foz2001, I was only messing with you, I'm sure your car gets great gas mileage and is "rusty but trusty"...or a "beater with a heater", and it's going to be a great collector's item in about 2 years....just like my RIG.

I'll make a deal with you, I'll scrap my rig, you scrap your winter beater, and we both upgrade :)

BTW...These PSoD (Pink Screen of Death) with checkers went away after I rolled back to the stock drivers. Thanks everyone for you help and humor.:D

if he UPs the ram to 256, or at min 128. win2k would be very stable on that machine.

but really, dont buy a new OS, buy a new pc.

my car turns heads, your computer causes laughs

edit: ps. i see that you added 256mb , good choice.
