Hello my data guru's!

i am at a point at work where i need to revise our current data storage needs, thus far we have been running fine but since i am revising our entire set up, i want to do it properly...

I wanted to know, what is the best way to track daily data needs to try and project the required space going forth over the next 1-2 years?

Look at past data? How much has it grown in the past?

If it is not too much data, then you might as well just go for a solution that can scale. There are ZFS servers up to Petabytes of storage and very fast I/O. With ZFS you can just move your disks to a larger server.

Or you could just use a hardware raid that goes up to 40TB or so, if you know you wont go above a limit.

Your backup guys might be able to help you out here in terms of what was used previously.

You probably should look at getting a conversion with your technical "futurists" to see what IT plans are in the pipeline so you can account for them (sorry for the obvious statement).

i am the backup guy :D, Sys admin, network admin, IT Manager,

was just thinking if there is a good way, preferably automated to track data growth versus manually checking folders daily and putting down numbers in an excel file :) that are moved over to my main repository server.

one of the best tools I've used for this short of 4 or 5 figure fullblown enterprise monitoring suites, includes reporting & trend analysis, export to PDF, Excel, XML, whatever.

you're welcome

Try to get a grip on what projects are coming up in the future, new software, etc - that will have a big impact on your usage needs. Are you going to be hiring 10 people next year? etc

For certain, good example really as we are about to bring 5 new people in with in the next month, luckily the work they will be doing is all based on web systems so local data will be minimal.

I now have someone working under me, thank god! so i can focus more on project like this and get things worked out...

Anyone here had to do an I.T plan to present to Accounting to explain what is needed and why? About to start one myself, but first one i have had to do.
