C2D vs. AMD

I'm curious...

I have a Dell XPS lappy, with C2D T7200 (merom). Upon realizing how much it really does kick the crap outta my workstation, I decided to upgrade.

Workstation now runs Opty 185, 3Gb PC3200 in dual-channel, and FireGL X3-256.

Yet, my lappy still beats workstation by ~10 sec. on 1M super_pi. (24.5 sec. average vs. 33.3 sec. average)

Lappy only has 2Gb, but is DDR2-667. C2D has 2Mb L2 per core as opposed to 1Mb/core on Opty, but the Opty is 2.6GHz, vs C2D at 2.0 GHz.

Don't get me wrong, I'm glad the lappy screams... but I'm just a bit surprised that the Opty didn't beat it. Any insight anyone? Is C2D really that much better than AMD? How much of this difference is due the faster RAM? Also, I should mention that I haven't had much time to try and compare real-time performance through apps. Just simple benchmarks.

BTW, I also noticed that while super_pi was calculating on the Opty workstation, Windows Task Manager's performance graphs showed only about 55% CPU usage.

Is that normal? I would expect the CPU to max out and complete the calculations faster.
All the single core CPU's that I've tested run at 100% while calculating super_pi.

Super Pi only uses one core. It all depends on what you are doing with it. In some things AMD is close and in others C2D blows it away it all depends on your usage.

Super Pi only uses one core.

Yeah, I kinda guessed that already. But I would still expect to see the one core go to at least 90% useage. I have Task Manager set to show one graph / CPU.

Is there a decent utility available to monitor multiple cores? Freeware or shareware that is?

What about an application that would benchmark using both cores?

Try a make buildworld with -j4 or 5 under freebsd. That will definately use both cores.

AM2 clocked at the same speed as a C2D is about 20% slower. There ya go. So with AMD you can get a cheap chip and OC the crap out of it like the black edition. If you want an updated workstation on the cheap.

I love my E6600 C2d any chip you can slap a high end air cooler on( tuniq tower for me)and get a 50% overclock and run it 25 idle and 39 load is more than great. Then again I don't do any bench marks,so what the hell.:D
