Buying used videocards

Hello,

I was wondering what companies are the ones to target for buying used videocards? I know couple of them used to allow warranty transfer, but I have not kept up with it in last few years.

In the past, eVGA and XFX were the best as they offered lifetime warranties and in XFX case, they allowed warranty transfer. Sadly, lifetime warranties are mostly gone except for certain products.

Are there any that still allow warranty transfer? Or must we forget about warranties if we buy used videocards??

I think majority are non transferable, except maybe 1 or 2.(chime in if you know)

If you do buy used, keep that user name close in case you need an rma

Generally avoid last generation Radeons, as they were very popular in the bitcoin mining craze, and have often been abused.

As far as OEM partners and vwarranty transfers go, pretty much all of them consider their warranties non-transferrable.

If you buy something used, see if you can get the original invoice from the seller. Claim the name on that invoice was your uncle and the video card was a gift, or something like that.

Buying used always has a bit of risk involved. Consider that risk when buying, and how much you are willing to pay.

I will say that all of the lifetime warranty cards I've bought in the past have never had a problem, have never been sent back, and probably wouldn't be worth it to send back now.

I haven't bought a new card in 7 years and none of them have ever died on me. I let others pay the new tax.

Gigabyte transfers third party warranties if the card is under warranty still. I've done it a couple times and had no issues. Most of the time they only require proof of purchase.

Pretty much everyone else doesn't, as far as i know.

i recently bought an EVGA GTX 760 on Ebay... about a month later during an undervolting experiment... the motherboard died and also took all the PCIe cards out (including the EVGA) with it... called EVGA up, told them the situation, that i bought it used, that it was my fault the card died and what can be done? The rep told me to just send it in... and they would replace it at no charge. i did just that.. the new replacement card arrived, swapped my backplate back onto it and i was back in business.

Needless to say i was an extremely happy camper. Still am... and i just wanted to put out the good word for EVGA... a company that stands behind their product!

Without starting a new thread, what does everyone think one all the used r9 290s? Knowing most were used to mine. Worth the $200 price tag or no? I don't know enough on how bad they would perform after being mined 24/7

Most are in perfectly fine condition. I myself am a miner. We take care of our cards, even if we do run them (almost 24/7). That being said, the R9 290 design is still quite new. Tons of new miners bought rigs earlier this year and when mining went south, are panic-selling their rigs. Lots of those 290s have serious treadlife left on them, unlike any 7950/7970 you may see.

If you are eyeing any cards in particular, aim for Gigabyte stuff. They will honor warranty transfers. I've RMAd a couple ebay cards and had 0 issues.

Thanks for the advice, was looking at two asus 290's but may look to see if anyone has those gigabyte versions in the for sale section in the next week.

I picked up a few used mining cards, haven't had a problem with any of them. One is in my brother's PC, one in his roomates, and one in mine. All three running fine ! (2 r9 280x's, 1 r9 290)

Cards that were used for mining are fine, Gigabyte and MSI use serial based warranties so you won't need to provide an invoice if you ever need to RMA them.

maybe you can look around for a new video card. I bought a asus r9 290 from newegg for 240 after rebate and gonna try to sell the game codes for 25 when I get them net will be 190. Hard to find a used one that cheap.

I had a couple of negative ebay experiences with R9 290Xs. One where half the backplate screws were missing and the guy had used thermal compound like glue (and this was a well-rated tech seller). Another from a miner box that was just dead. Eventually got my money back but still a PITA. Won't be doing that again.

I've also had some issues where components weren't packaged properly.

After I killed my 7970 by slipping with my screwdriver a few weeks after I bought it at launch, I bought a 768Mb GTX460 on eBay, and when it arrived it was just thrown in a normal plastic bag in a cardboard box, without any protection from damage or ESD.

Luckily enough it worked, (and still does) but it wasn't very confidence inspiring.

XFX's warranty is like this...

7000 series and R5/7/9 series- 2 year warranty from the date of sale to the distributor, OR 2 year warranty from your receipt date.

If your card has 2 fans (Dual Dissipation models) or was purchased from Best Buy in North America Region, it would be eligible for the lifetime warranty if you register it within 30 days of the purchase date and keep your receipt.

The 2 year warranty is standard, we don't care if you're the 3rd owner, as long as the serial # or receipt is within 2 years. (this has to due with our warranty through AMD and our factory). If you don't have the receipt, we base it off our internal sale date, usually within 60 days of the cards born date (based on serial #). If someone else has already registerred the serial # you are claiming is yours, and you dont have a receipt, we have a minor issue here and typically try to contact the previous owner.

If you are the 2nd owner of a R9 or 7000 series, the lifetime warranty does not apply to you, it is null. If you ever have questions or need clarification on a serial #, please call us at 800 880 3225.

Thanks
