Buying a new PSU

I'm in the market for a new PSU. Preferably I want a standard sized unit, since my Lian Li PC-60 is modded with a 120mm on top, and any PSU larger than 160mm would interfere. Though, I have a P180 I can use if it turns out I have no other choice. Also, modular is a plus, especially for higher power models that have a million cables. 6+ SATA connectors is good. A quiet PSU is very important. Price can be anywhere up to $200.

However, the most important thing is build quality. Back in 2004 I bought a shiny new $120 OCZ Powerstream 520 because all you crazy gamers/overclockers were ranting about it back then, and I thought it would last me forever. It still has sufficient rated power for practically any sensible system that I would build, but the capacitors on the 5v are now bulging so I need to replace it.


Here's my insane and overly cynical paranoid overanalysis of some suitable PSUs I've come across:

Antec EA650 - Nice and to the point, a good Delta unit. Great capacitors, except...a few Ltecs or whatever thrown in there for whatever reason. Sounds to me like they could start bulging 5 years from now, and I'd be right back here.

Seasonic M12D - Great platform, seemingly perfect, used on XFX units, etc. Except the M12D platform has weird failures, and Oklahoma Wolf pointed out a possible solder bridge failure thing. Mostly affecting an old revision, but with my luck this is the revision that I would get. I don't want the PSU mysteriously failing after a few years.

Seasonic X-650 - Yeah, the best consumer platform out there right now, etc. It's an unproven first gen product, so of course it's not perfect, and probably has some hidden engineering flaw that makes the transformer catch fire after a year or something. Seasonic will address this by releasing a new revision blah blah we've heard that before. Pass.

Corsair HX650 - You know, it looks good but I can't find any reviews on it. Oh well.

Antec Signature 650 - Second best to the X-650, and no one wants to be second best. Also too expensive for what you get, and too long.

Antec TruePower New - Good build quality but with sloppy soldering. Ugh.



So as you can see, I can't make up my mind. These units are all good but they each have some minor flaw. I actually really want the X-650 but who knows. Surely with a $200 budget I can get the perfect PSU, right?

Any OCZ PSU these days are not good. OCZ back then was difference. OCZ and raidmax PSU's are not recommended by anyone anymore

I know, the Powerstream was allegedly pretty good back then but nowadays OCZ's offerings are mediocre. I don't think Raidmax has ever had good units though.

Okay, this is pretty good. I actually already found it at ewiz through froogle but I didn't know about the coupon code, thanks.

The 650HX is based on the same platform as the 520HX and 620HX PSUs but with some slight modification for additional amperage. So basically, take a look at any proper 620HX review and that should give you a good idea of the 650HX.

I know it's just a tweaked version of those but I'm worried that something like ripple changed.

HX650 - solid unit and can't go wrong with Corsair support/warranty.
