i would like to know what processor+mobo to pair it with so as not to bottleneck the potential of my card.. plan on running it @ around 1650x1080..i am leaning towards intel..would like it to be future proof for at least 12-18 mos.. and would like to keep it under 400$..thx for the help

Get an Intel X38 or X48 motherboard and an Intel E8400 Cpu and your set :)

Any Core 2 platform with a CPU running at around 2.5-3GHz will be plenty for a 4870. If you want something to last you, you'll want at least an E8400 or Q9450.

If you arent going to use CrossFire no real benefit in spending the extra money on a X38 or X48. Go with a P35 or P45 chipset.

You should be able to get a mobo, C2Q processor, and 4gigs of ram after shipping and tax within your $400 budget.

I was in your shoes a few weeks back and am very happy with the parts in my sig. :)

If you are near Fry's you may want to check out Intel Core 2 Duo Processor E8400 & Gigabyte GA-EP35-DS3L Motherboard for $250 today and tomorrow.

Why are you guys telling him to buy X38 or X48 when he didn't mention CrossFire?
Single GPU; P35 or P45 is fine.

what are the differences between a dk p35 and dk p45?

this is all so new to me, last time i built a computer was 3 years ago when the 7800gt was released. i was a LOT more knowledgeable then but now i feel like i'm in spanish class :(

The chipset. The DK p35 uses the p35 chipset while DK p45 uses the p45 chipset. The 2 main things the p45 has over the p35 is that it runs crossfire at x8 and x8 (the p35 chipset runs crossfire at x16 and x4) and the p45 is 65nm where the p35 is 90nm. As for the mobos themselves, well, the physical changes should be apparent, but most of the differences are in the chipset. I am an ASUS fan so I'm gonna recommend the P5Q-E or the P5Q Deluxe and either the e7200 or e8400 to you, but do some research and decide on what you want to buy.

Dont quote me but I believe the changes are somewhat nominal. P45 adds support for PCI express 2.0 and Southbridge ICH10R.

Not really worth it IMO. I would go for the P35 chipset. Its a solid and stable chipset with a very good feature set.

Wrong. No CrossFire on DK P35 . Only one PCI-e slot. ;)

I would think an X38/X48 combined with SLI'd 4850's (for $300) total would fit your bill nicely.

I have a P31 based board with an E4400 running at 3Ghz and with the 4850 in there it acctually outruns my Q6600 @ 3.0Ghz with SLI 8800GT....But I must need to reinstall Windows on my Q6600 machine cuz simply....that aint right. But hot damn P31+E4400@3.0 Ghz+4850 is a damn sweet cheap machine I must say.
