I want to put a raid 1 in my server and am wondering, if i were to pull one of the harddrives out after being set up as a raid 1, could the drives work on their own? I think what I'm trying to ask is hard to explain. If I pull a hd out of the raid, and put it in another computer, will the hd show up with all the data on it?

Hope that makes sense.

The answer is "probably not". If the raid controller uses on-disk configuration stored at the front of the disk, the other machine trying to read the drive as a stand-alone disk will try to read the configuration as a partition table, and end up with incorrect results.

What exactly are you trying to do? Raid 1 is not backup, it's only an uptime increasing device. If you put your data on a raid 1 it's relatively immune to disk failure, but a virus, slip of the finger, or controller failure could still destroy your data. If you think backup is expensive, you should check out recovery services. They're not exactly cheap either.
