Hey guys, well ive been thinking about building a new rig seeing as Windows 64 is out and the AGP interface is all but phased out. My current system is as follows:

P4 @ 3.2ghz w/HT

2gb Corsair XMS Pro RAM

160 gb Seagate HDD - SATA

Radeon X800XT-PE (AGP)

Asus P4C800E-Deluxe Motherboard

500 watt Thermaltake PSU

Creative Audigy 2 ZS Sound Card

The system that im considering building is somthing along these lines:

AMD Athlon 64 FX-55

ASUS A8V-E Deluxe VIA K8T890 Motherboard

CORSAIR XMS 512MB 184-Pin DDR SDRAM ECC Registered DDR 400 (PC 3200) System Memory (would probably get 4 sticks)

ATI Radeon X850XT-PE (PCI-E)

Segate 160 gb HDD (From my current system)

Creative Audigy 2 zs (from my current system)

ENERMAX All in One Noisetaker Series EG701AX-VE SFMA(24P) 600W Power Supply

Swiftech H20-80-FB(Rev.3) LIQUID COOLING KITS - Retail

Antec Performance I P160 Silver 1.2mm anodized aluminum ATX Mid Tower Case with Swiveling Front Control Panel features LED Display - Retail

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I think that this new system will give me alot of longavity and upgradeability with its PCI-E slots and the FX-55 being the flagship of the AMD 64 series, giving me power for at least 3 years.

Why a K8T890 based motherboard? The Nforce4 is the best performer right now and can probably be had for just as cheap as the Via chipset.

FX-55 might be overkill. You could probably get away with a 3800+ or 4000+ and save yourself a few hundred bucks. But if you have the money, the FX-55 would be fun to play with ;).

I might hold out for a little longer with your current system. It is by no means slow and would probably take you into the dual core era. I'd wait for a few more months with the system you have now.

Non-Venice/San Diego core Athlon64 + 4x512 RAM? No. Bad idea. Also, what would you want/need ECC Registered RAM for anyway? If it even worked, it would slow it down a great deal.

P.S. VIA is fine if you aren't overclocking, or only planning to do some minor overclocking.

i dont know too much about venice/San Diego core Athalon 64s...as far as the RAM im almost positive that ran is what ran well with the FX-55 according to Tomshardware. The reason i wouldnt go with an nForce board is b/c i prefer ATI graphics cards.
