Building my Dream Computer!

How is this RAM?
you could buy the same your motherboard manufac. recommends!

Yes, 2x2Gb is a good idea. Stick with that RAM. The stuff suggested in the previous post is WAAAY too expensive for basically the same thing. Also, as far as the monitor goes, if you are planning on watching High Def DVD's and such, I would get the 27 incher as opposed to the 30" due to the fact that HDCP isn't carried over dual-link DVI AFAIK, and the movie can't play at native res anyway.

I agree with the q6600 thing though. The 6700 is much too expensive for basically no benefit.

um we understand that you want/need the quad core for your multithreaded apps. but....why don't you just get the q6600 instead of the q6700?..

I'm getting a 37" westinghouse.

I've never researched the q6600 overclockability. Does the q6600 have the same overclock potential as the q6700?

If you're just going to run them at 800Mhz, what's the point in getting DDR2-1066 memory?

I don't know... I'm not all that hardware savvy and I just want the best.

I welcome anyone here to spec out the best computer. My only constraints is I already have a pair of 8800GTX KO ACS3's, I need (yes, need) 4GB of RAM, and I want quad core.

Good choice on the monitor. q6600 is a decent overclocker and will save you money. Also DDR 800 is more than good enough for now, and later you should get DDR3 anyways.

I guess what I'm asking is, will I get higher speeds overclocking a q6600 or will I get higher speeds overclocking a q6700? Saving money isn't really a concern.

I wish I could say that. On that note, you should go all out.

1 x Asus Commando
QX6800
2 x 8800 Ultra
2 x 150Gb Raptor RAID 0
2 x 1Tb storage
Watercooled 1200W PSU
Watercooled RAM
etc,etc,etc

I wish I could say that. On that note, you should go all out.

1 x Asus Commando <--didnt even know that board existed... I'll have a good look at it
QX6800 <--boxed proc isnt available :(
2 x 8800 Ultra <--already have two 8800gtx ko acs3
2 x 150Gb Raptor RAID 0 <--of course! ;)
2 x 1Tb storage <--I'll work that out with a NAS or some external hard drives
Watercooled 1200W PSU <--uhh...no.
Watercooled RAM <--heard OCZ flex has some problems...
etc,etc,etc

I commented in your post. I'll have a good look at the commando board. What appeals to me is there's two available PCI slots available when both PCI-e slots are populated with double-slot cards. That would allow for a sound card AND a PPU...

Since when Commando supports SLI?

QX6700
Evga 680 A1 or T1
2 x 150GB Raptors
2 x 500GBs
Silverstone SST-ST75ZF 750w QUAD SLI - $180
Corsair 4 x 1GB PC-8500 Dom.

Water cooling ram is pointless. You're better off /w active air cooling.
Looks very good so far. :)

LOL get a girlfriend, man!

hhaha dude i have a girlfriend and shes dammmn smoking hot. i mean c'mon the guy asked what do you need 800 gb worth of data space for? honestly the only thing i can think of is music he downloads, porn.

i have a 36gb raptor + 80 gb hard drive and thats more than enough for me.

Well, I'm into music recording and production, I want to get into video editing. I also want to have room for my HD movie library. I was never into pornography...

BTW, im getting two 500GB drives, making it about 1.3TB

What's the difference between the A1 and the T1?

I typed this up earlier, but forgot to post it:

I figured buying a 4GB kit would have a better chance of working than if I were to buy two 2GB dual channel kits separately. Besides, I could just run the RAM at 800MHz. If you have any other suggestions for going 4GB let me know.

The processor stays. I use a lot of multithreaded applications so the quad core is practical for me.

Well, I meant that you don't need DDR2-1066, nor will you even need DDR2-800. All you need is DDR2-667 with a quad core, since the typical OC for a quadcore is 3.2Ghz on good air cooling.

I also meant that the extreme version of the chip is a waste of money, hehe. Go for the Q6600 instead, much cheaper. The only difference between the two is the multiplier. If you plan on running at 3.2Ghz, then go with the Q6600 (up to about 3.4Ghz). If you plan on running any higher, then go with the QX6700. The performance increase from 3.2Ghz to 3.6Ghz isn't enough to warrant the $400 price premium, but as you said, money isn't a problem, so just go for the $1k chip, lol.

QX6700: 10 * 266 = 2.66Ghz, DDR2-533 << stock
QX6700: 10 * 333 = 3.33Ghz, DDR2-667 << typical OC
QX6700: 10 * 366 = 3.66Ghz, DDR2-732 << high OC

Q6600 = 9 * 266 = 2.4Ghz, DDR2-533 << stock
Q6600 = 9 * 333 = 3.0Ghz, DDR2-667 << typical OC
Q6600 = 9 * 378 = 3.4Ghz, DDR2-756 << high OC

As you can see, no need for DDR2-1066.

Good, go for it.

Don't bother with the Commando or Striker Asus boards. Stick with the eVGA A1.

How are you planning to get these HD movies? I want some.

if he is spending this much on a pc then he prob. just buys all his HD movies......like everyone does

1 terbyte is nothign when u start putting HD/blueray content on your system...30 gigs a piece racks up QUICK

OK now I understand. Would the Mushkin be faster? I just want the best 4GB kit.

It would be, but you won't notice the difference between CL4 and CL5. Again, the performance difference isn't substantial enough to warrant the extra $240. Up to 3% performance improvement is not worth double the price.

$240 - G.SKILL 4GB(2x2GB) 5-5-5-15 DDR2-800 F2-6400CL5D-4GBPQ
$480 - mushkin 4GB(2x2GB) 4-3-3-10 DDR2-800 996561

The most important timing value is the first one, the Cas Latency. For best performance, RAM should run at a 1:1 ratio with the CPU. What do you plan on running the CPU at?

for example, if you went with the Q6600 and only plan on running 3Ghz, then all you need is DDR2-667 because:

9 * 333 = 3.0Ghz, and 2 * 333 = DDR2-667

$210 - Wintec AMPX 4GB(2x2GB) DDR2-675 4-4-4-12 3AXT5400C4-4096K

the performance difference isn't substantial enough to warrant the extra $240.

That's completely false.
This ram is more expensive for a reason.
You can achieve higher frequency /w much lower timings. If you're planning on OCing, then this is it unless you want to spend extra $200 on the PC-8500 set.

Just look at this review:
http://www.xtremesystems.org/forums/showthread.php?t=138670

I know it's the higher binned 8500($650), but this 6400 should perform just as good. ;)

so if I wanted to run a qx6700 1:1 with the cpu and overclock, what should I get? Thanks for helping me through this, everyone.

If you're planning on running Windows Vista, I would suggest you go /w 2 x 2gb modules.
If you're going to use XP, then 2gb set is plenty.

what about opitcal drives? are you going to go for blu-ray/HD-DVD? if money is no concern then why the hell not do it.

oh and one more thing...

if moneh is no concern... wanna buy another 8800gtx and just... ship it to meh!

I may get a blu-ray drive later on but for now I'll use the drives I have.

I just discovered that my card has a $3000 daily spending limit! I called my issuer and they said they could do nothing about it. So I ordered the main parts today and I will order everything else tomorrow.

Good choice. I didnt get to answer your question earlier, about which ram you should get, because the site went down. But, the choice you made is good. The DDR2-667 would have only saved you $20, so theres not much savings there considering your budget.
