why do you need SLI/crossfire with only a 23" screen?

do you plan to get 2 more? if not then it doesnt matter

with 1000 bucks you can look at getting a

1366 920 system with 6gb ram 5850 all that good stuff, or at least a 1156 based system

Hey Sikkyu,

I believe he is going to expand to a dual monitor setup at some point, so he's just looking for SLI/Crossfire functionality. He does not want two video cards at this point yet though. I also believe there was some 3d video card that came out that he may be interested in the future, but don't know how long from now.

pretty much the only setup you can get that does SLI/Crossfire at full speed is 1366 system or a PII 790 or 890 based chipset.

I would recomend the 920+1366 since thats what I run. I dont really have alot of time to look at specific parts but i would be looking at

920 -200$
X58 mobo -180$
6gb 1333 or better ram - 140$
solid 800w PSU 100$
Case (mid or full) 100-$
1TB 7200 RPM HD - 90$

that leaves you with 180$ for the video card and maximum upgradeablity.

Obviously a 5850 for multi monitor setups would work just fine and 2x 5850's is pretty badass.

look for deals on the 5850 for 250, but anything under 280 is pretty solid.

these are rough numbers from the top of my head but thats what you want to shoot for.

How far are you away from the Microcenter in New Jersey?

Well find out, cuz you can get the i7 930 for $200, and the i7 920 for $180, if you're near it. :p

What's his budget for the storage setup? I don't see HDD listed as being part of the budget. :D For the rest of the parts:

$170 - Intel Core i7-920 Bloomfield 2.66GHz
$170 - MSI X58M LGA 1366 Intel X58 Micro ATX
$175 - G.SKILL 6GB (3x2GB) DDR3-1600 F3-12800CL7T-6GBPI 7-8-7-24-2N 1.5V
$160 - XFX HD-577X-ZNFC Radeon HD 5770 1GB 128-bit
$100 - Microsoft Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit OEM
$20 - Samsung CD/DVD Burner Black SATA Model SH-S223C OEM
$85 - Antec NEO ECO 620C 620W 80+ Certified APFC ($10 MIR; FS)
==========
$880 + tax and shipping + case of choice + hdd or ssd

edit: added links and OS... damn, doesn't look like it'll stay under $1k, lol... hopefully someone can fix that. Hm... lowered it a bit more, still not enough for a case and hdd, though. An F3 500GB or WD5000AAKS is another $55, and you can find an Antec case for $50 shipped (200S IIRC). This is, of course, assuming you're close enough to a MC, lol.

Antec Earthwatt 650 watt is good psu but the Antec eco 620watt is much nicer on the eyes than EA650 for the same price.

Updated to include the HDD as part of the build; I knew I was forgetting something!

$160 - AMD Phenom II X4 955 CPU
$140 - Gigabyte GA-890GPA-UD3H AM3 AMD 890GX ATX Motherboard
$94 - A-Data AD3U1333B2G9-DRH 2 x 2GB DDR3 1333 RAM
$56 - Western Digital WD5000AAKS 500GB 7200RPM SATA 3.0Gb/s Hard Drive
$20 - Samsung SH-S223C SATA DVD Burner
$235 - XFX HD-577X-ZNFC Radeon HD 5770 1GB PCI-E Video Card + XFX P1-650X-CAG9 650W Modular PSU
$100 - Windows 7 Home Premium 64bit OEM
$70 - Cooler Master RC-590-KKN1-GP ATX Case
--------
Total: $875 plus tax and shipping.

That XFX PSU should be enough for HD 5770 Crossfire. Also, that x8/x8 Crossfire is only 5% slower than x16/x16 Crossfire. Went with the Coolermaster case because it was the cheapest case I would use for a Crossfire setup. Let me know if you want a different case. The remaining $125 should be more than enough to cover the tax and shipping.
