Here's the story. I have a wealthy friend that needs a new computer. He wants me to build it, since I built the last one years ago. I am not current on the new technology so I come to you guys for help.

Since I will be the one maintaining the computer when there are problems, I need a VERY STABLE system. I do not plan on overclocking, I want to put together a system with the best stock performance possible. I choose AMD because I didn't like how hot my P4 3.4 got when I built it a year ago.

This guy is not a hardcore gamer, but he will on occassion. He will mainly be using the computer for work and internet. Downloading LOTS and burning DVDs like crazy. He definitely wants to be able to burn DVD to DVD, instead of ripping the DVD, then burning it.

The case was already picked out.. so that's already taken care of..

What can you guys suggest for me?
Remember that budget is NOT a concern here...

Thanks very much.

Get the new Plextor Burner PX-760A if you can find it. PX-716A if you cant.

The samsungs ok, but if your gonna be burnin alot get a premium burner..

I don't think an FX-60 is necessary, if you got a X2 of some sorts he'll probobly never notice the difference.

Since you said "stock" I would say hell no to the FX60. Its only great quality is the unlocked multi. I would stick to the X2 line.

Man the guy's not unlimited cash and wants the best. No point in not getting the best.

"This guy is not a hardcore gamer" = Does not need an FX60 to me.

Its like somebody saying that have "unlimited money" and they want to buy a fast car but they don't drive fast all the time just occasionally and recommending them to buy a Bugatti Veyron.

teh best?

tyan mobo
twin 7900GTX
2 raptors
4 x seagate 500gb
xfi elite
pcp&C 1000w

I'd say he should get the FX-60. Dual-core > Single-core.

Just one LCD? :D

I'd get 3 for a kick ass driving sim setup.

Why not get some 8xx opterons. You can put eight of them in some boards with an expansion right?

yes but none of them mobo support SLI, sides, prolly won't fit in the case that OP wants

Yes, by all means get a dual-core. But I think an FX60 is overkill for a person who isn't going to primarily game, even to a person with unlimited money.

If you're going to spend 1000$ on a CPU what not get more video power? Games are so GPU limited he'd see better performance with a 7900GTX and a 3500+. He should get at least one 7900GTX if not two, with that kind of budget.

EDIT: Ha! I didn't see the not. Never mind.

My advice : Go with a Opteron 180 or X2 4800+ and get a 7900GTX definitely. No need to get a FX-60.

But why get an opteron if the user will run it at stock?

Anyway, the OP did say
best stock performance possible
,and the fx60 would fit the bill IMO.

He also said

So IMO even a 7900gt would be overkill for an occasional gamer(I mean I'm more than an occasional gamer and my 7800gt is fine).

Keep in mind a Opteron is of higher quality so that would bring him the most reliable computer. I didn't suggest a FX-60 since if he isn't a heavy gamer, i'm not sure 1000$ is a good amount to spend on a single part.

I have ruled out the FX-60 because it won't be used to it's full potential. So the fastest X2 out there will be what I end up going with.

Though the budget is pretty much umlimited, keep in mind that I don't want a high maintainence machine on my hands. I want to be able to build this PC and leave it alone for as long as possible. I don't have any knowledge of water cooling systems so I'd like to stay away from that as much as possible. I don't have alot of free time due to work so doing the research on this stuff is quite hard.

I would like to go with a couple 150 Raptors, I think that would be sufficient. Also running dual video cards wouldn't be necessary in this setup.

Stability is my main concern and I have read there has been problems with certain ASUS motherboards, a brand that I've used alot in the past.

I have some time to look up some of your suggestions so I'd like to thank those that have answered. Please don't let my post stop this thread, I won't be purchasing parts for another week, so any other ideas are welcome!

So which one is it? That just takes me to my wish list which is a blank page. I clicked on Public Wish lists but don't know which one is yours. Is it the X24800+? If so it looks sweet.

Not sure why the list isn't working, but here is what is on it so far.

  • AMD Athlon 64 X2 4800+ Toledo 1GHz HT 2 x 1MB L2 Cache Socket 939 Dual Core Processor
  • Western Digital Raptor 150GB 3.5" Serial ATA150 Hard Drive (x2)
  • BFG Tech BFGR79512GTXOCE Geforce 7900GTX 512MB 256-bit GDDR3 PCI Express x16 Video Card

Why not a seperate storage drive since he'll be downloading alot? I'd do a 150 raptor for OS, then a 400gig SE16 WD for storage.

Actually since RAID 0 seemed to be the key, I would do 2x Raptor 150GB with OS, and another fast drive like a maxline III for storage?
Alternatively, do 4 raptors, with 2 raids one for OS the other for storage.

i would go with a server motherboard and a pair of s940 opterons if stability and reliability are the main concern.. its one of those things, where even if i have the money to buy the best, i wouldn't buy more than what i need.. but some people have money to the point where they could drop $10k on a computer without blinking.. so i don't know...

i would do that, but drop down to dual 270s or 275s..
drop one of the video cards..
he probably couldn't even begin to fill 2TB.. start out with "only" 1tb of space..
lose the watercooling for maintenance reasons..
but add a 2nd 3007..

*sigh*

i don't even know what i can add to this thread...

a 2p/4 core system is stupid for this guy.

get a good dual core processor and leave it at that. the rest is just personal pref.
