building a server. need advice?

ok i decided to build a server. for well not even really my network. mainly my own pc lol.

but anyway. i ahve a few questions

I use a program called SABnzbd works aesome as a server. and do all my downloading through it. i am really ofset on what OS to use. i'd prefer to stay with windows. and have heard win 2k3 server edition works fairly well to run a server. Right now theres 800gigs of space going into the server plus a 20 gig OS drive.
will win 2k3 be good for this? since i allready know it etc.

also. I dont want to use a kvm. dont want a second screen keyboard. etc. whats a good program to use over the network to allow me to fully comtrol my other pc? :)

any advice would be great

btw. i have 2x250 maxtor and 1x300 maxtor ide drives. plus 1x20 gig drive. ALL ide. for starts. then i plan to buy hdd's in sets of 4.. so 4x300 sata to set into raids.

What's the point of a server for only one person? just add hdds in your computer
If you want a program to serve files to you, no need to pay for anything....just use netbios, it's integrated in windows (windows files & printers sharing) also to remote control the os.......just use terminal server, it's integrated in windows also....
and then....no need to pay for windows to do this. what a wast of cash just put any linux/bsd on it, share using samba and remote control by ssh or vnc.
 
VNC or RDP both work fine.

I've used both Windows 2003 with RDP, and Linux with SSL+VNC and they both get the job done fine. There is more configuration involved with Linux.

I need to reload my home server tonight actually and I'm going to install Windows 2003 with Cygwin to use OpenSSH for my SFTP needs. I don't like using plain FTP for the lack of encryption.
 
the point of a server form ysel fi i plan to also move out to a media pc for my tv and would like to have it run off something other then my pc's hdd's

also this is a gaming pc. and extra 25 lbs of hdd's is not wha ti want in it.

snce i do lans. i like to easily be able to take my game pc.

and my os concern is to limit the load the os forces on the pc itself. and save ram, cpu power ettc for downloading, repairs, serving etc.

Umm then build a media system instead of having an additional machine...

You hardly take your pc around and I doubt you trek it accross the country on planes for LANs... so it's only 25lbs more... not much.

The computer remains the same size, just a little heavier.

Hardly any load. If you were the only one using it you won't even be able to tell.

there will be more then one htpc. and Ys i trek my pc to my car and around the province anyw here from 1-5 times a month.s ot he extra weight does add to being a royal pain in the ass.

Also the pc is over overclocked and it adds heat.
and the weight does matter. and it could be streamign 1-3 sources at a time. nto what i want for load on my main pc.

to add to this. wen i take my pc for the wekend i would like gf to still have media access. make sense yet?
 
im doing the file server. i jsut need assistance in the right os to use. and good software to allow me to control it from my main pc.

its only 1.2ghz amd. (the server) So I need to keep an os on it that wont hog power. xp i kno wis a bit of a hog. but i think 2k3 server edition is more along the lines of what i need.
 
not at all, 2k3 has higher system requirements. I think the min requirement is like a P3. For a file server the best choices are definitely a variant of linux or bsd. Again you can remote contol using ssh and vnc.
 
To me for just a simple file server it sounds like you are thinking about this too much. If your server has a 1.2Ghz Athlon then just throw on Windows XP set up file sharing and be done with it. You dont need an expensive and power hungry server OS like 2k3. Thats what I would do.

If you are comfortable with Linux or willing to learn, you could throw Linux on the machine. it would work fine, you can share files to a windows machine with Samba. Heck if your worried about performance you could run Linux from the comand prompt, with no GUI. Probably get better performace that way that anything.

Edit: You might ask around in the networking forum about building a file server.
 
i think ill go with xp. im going to be using the xbox for a media center and i know how to use the sharing programs for xp.. that will make my life easier.

now last concern is remote controlf or the xp machine?
 
Para - I think you might be too stuck on the idea of a "server". If all this box is doing is file sharing, it's not really a full blown server. Almost any OS can do simple file sharing. You would only need a server if it's actually going to be actively "serving" something like mail, applications, network, or other services, which you would never need at home. Keep in mind that server 2003 SBS will run you at least $500 with 5 CALs (if you're buying a legit copy), unless you're lucky and get an eval version from a class.

Also, not to be a total asshole, but you might want to consider taking more time when you type, it's hard to read with all the typos.
 
Run XP pro on it. Set up users and shared folders. Admin it with the Management Console and or Remote Desktop. Simple, quick, and painless.
 
Thanks guys. Yeah i really only ment file server. not full blown server.

I think I will stick with windows XP and use remote desktop.

Now to figure out if I i want to use jsut xp or media edition since I may purchase a 360 int he future. hmm
