Im building a server case for a friend of mine. This server will be running windows server 2008 and windows CRM. There will only be a maximum of 5 computers logged onto this server at a time. Im just unsure of what kind of Hardware I will need to support the traffic to my server.

Well first of all, find out exactly what this server will be doing. Find out exactly what and why those 5 PCs are connecting to the server for.

Also, is this for a business?

This is for a small business. The server run Microsoft CRM which basically builds a database of customer information which all of the 5 computers will be able to access and update when needed.

What's the max budget total for this server?

But so far, a RAID10 (slight overkill :)) might be a good idea for this server.

The budget is between $500-$1000. I know thats a big margin but i would like to see something inbetween those numbers. This is my first time ever building a server so Im not really sure what to go for.

Hmm, contact a mod to move this thread over to the Networking and Security subforum. The guys there know a whole lot more about actual servers for businesses than the guys over here (more knowledgeable about servers for home)

5 users and using 2008? home server would be better for anything less than 10 user with no plans to go beyond that within 2 years.

First off, WHS v2 "Vail" is 2008. Second, Windows Home Server might not be a bad idea in this case, as it will be able to properly manage the small business not only by running the software but possibly act as a backup solution as well.

-Cool-
