I honestly don't remember last time I upgraded. I'm still on a godamn barton 2500+ at 2.4ghz a gig of pc3200 and an nf-7s nforce2 board.

I want to upgrade. Heres what I'm thinking:

AMD Athlon 64 4000+ San Diego 2.4GHz
DFI LANPARTY UT nF4 Ultra-D
eVGA 512-P2-N635-AR Geforce 7950GT KO 512MB

and I migrate the ram over from my system. I really don't plan on overclocking much if any, I just want something that'll last me as long as this system has without any problems or frustrations.

any suggestions would be awesome, thanks!

Another thing, my LCD maxes out at 1280x1024 so I figured a 7950 will last me years since it runs just about anything at 1600x1200 maxed with no problems.

And my Budget is a maximum of $500.

intel Core2duo E6300
Gigabyte S3
7900GT
2x512 DDR2 533/667/800
Ultra X-Finity 500w (Zipzoomfly this one, the blue one is $35 after rebate)

This is atleast $150 past my budget.

Thats above $500 I believe.

Anyway, WalteRr, goods choice of parts there. Just make sure your power supply can handle it. The 7950GT requires a 400W power supply minimum.

Hmm, I got it at $599..

Either way, you would be best suited not to go with a 939 setup because 939 is a dead end. IF anything, Core 2 duo is the least you should be looking at. try the asrock mobo that supports both ddr and ddr2, and work your way from there. Do not forget a good power supply that will handle your new parts either.

How about the 7900GS? Performance is similar to the GT.

If you keep your old ram and go with a 7900GS:
$181 - Intel Core 2 Duo E6300 Conroe 1.86GHz
$160 - eVGA 256-P2-N624-AR GeForce 7900GS 256MB ($180 - $20MIR)
$57 - ASRock 775Dual-VSTA Socket T (LGA 775) VIA PT880 PRO
$40 - XClio 450BL ATX 450W
==========
$438 + tax and shipping (after rebates)

If you buy new ram and go with a 7600GT:
$181 - Intel Core 2 Duo E6300 Conroe 1.86GHz
$110 - G.Skill 1GB (2x512MB) DDR2-800 F2-6400CL5D-1GBNQ
$105 - eVGA 256-P2-N550 -T2 GeForce 7600GT 256MB ($125 - $20MIR)
$57 - ASRock 775Dual-VSTA Socket T (LGA 775) VIA PT880 PRO
$40 - XClio 450BL ATX 450W
==========
$493 + tax and shipping (after rebates)

Here's more info on that board:
$57 - ASRock 775Dual-VSTA Socket T (LGA 775) VIA PT880 PRO

In summary: DDR400 is still good enough for C2D and the slower PCI-E slot will slow down only current high end cards by only 10%. It won't affect midrange cards much. It's a great stopgap budget board. Oh, and if you didn't know, AsRock is Asus' budget brand.
