Building a new computer

I would like to build a new computer as the ones I have now are quite old. My budget is around $400 to $500. The computer doesn't have to be top of the line, just something that works and allows me to surf and do video editing. Just looking for the best bang for my buck. I'll probably be looking to install Pinnacle Software (Video Editing).

In terms of importance -- reliability, speed, lots of RAM and stability are key. I'm looking for suggestions for new parts.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

) What will you be doing with this PC? Gaming? Photoshop? Web browsing? etc

A: Mostly browsing, light photoshop, mostly video editing.

2) What's your budget? Are tax and shipping included?

A: $400-500 plus shipping

3) Which country do you live in? If the U.S, please tell us the state and city if possible.

A: Canada - Ottawa Ontario

4) What exact parts do you need for that budget? CPU, RAM, case, etc. The word "Everything" is not a valid answer. Please list out all the parts you'll need.

A: CPU/Mobo, ram, case, Hard Drive, good video card whether it's onboard or not don't care, as long it does what I need. Power Supply

5) If reusing any parts, what parts will you be reusing? Please be especially specific about the power supply. List make and model.

A: No

6) Will you be overclocking?

A: No

7) What is the max resolution of your monitor? What size is it?

A: I will be connecting to my 46 inch LED TV via HDMI

8) When do you plan on building/buying the PC?

A: Immediately

9) What features do you need in a motherboard? RAID? Firewire? Crossfire or SLI support? USB 3.0? SATA 6Gb/s? eSATA? Onboard video (as a backup or main GPU)? UEFI? etc.

A: USB 3.0, RAID good to have. All the above is good to have but not essential. Just looking for the best bang for my buck

10) Do you already have a legit and reusable/transferable OS key/license? If yes, what OS? Is it 32bit or 64bit? -

A: No OS license

I haven't been computer shopping in Canada since... well, ever. I used to live in Toronto with my older brother and he was the one buying new computer parts all the time. My experiences second hand would recommend checking up on boxing day sales and check out Tiger direct. That's where he found his best deals.

Thanks for the info. I was thinking of doing the same ie. Tiger Direct etc but I also wanted the experience of playing around with hardware and building my own. But thanks anyway, you can guarantee I'll be keeping an eye on Tiger Direct etc.

Which online Canadian computer hardware store do you want to buy from?

Though a quick and dirty build would be something like:
AMD FX-6300
AMD AM3+ motherboard
8GB of DDR3 RAM
HD 6570 video card
Seagate 1TB hard drive
Corsair CX430 or CX500, whichever one is the cheapest.
NZXT Source 210 Elite or Coolermaster HAF 912 case
WIndows 7 Pro or Windows 8 64bit

More than likely you're looking at $600 or so if you actually want to meet your needs.

Read your CPU and motherboard choice again. Notice something wrong?

Also, FFS, are you even reading the first post? What makes you think he can afford a 4770K with a budget of $500 for the whole system?

Would an APU work in this build or save money? I have no experience with APU, but I assume the video editing is just some videos shot via point-and-shoot camera etc, nothing ridiculous.

Or are APUs basically crap?

They're not crap but they're not exactly optimal for many people. In this case, more cores would be the better idea.
