Hello everyone:

I built a computer about a year ago and I received help from the people on this forum, and I must say that you guys are the best. So, my dad asked me to build him a computer and I told him that I would do it. However, I can't do it without you guys so here it is :)

1) What will you be doing with this PC? Gaming? Photoshop? Web browsing? etc
Mainly for web browsing, e-mailing, business-related stuff, and so forth. However, my dad is a huge battlefield series fan and he is looking forward to playing Battlefield 3 whenever that comes out. So the computer needs to be able to handle gaming as well.
2) What's your budget? Are tax and shipping included?
Around $1,000, tax and shipping included.
3) Where do you live?
Japan
4) What exact parts do you need for that budget? CPU, RAM, case, etc. Please be very specific.
Everything for a new computer build, except for a monitor and OS.
5) If reusing any parts, what parts will you be reusing? Please be especially specific about the power supply. List make and model.
N/A
6) Will you be overclocking?
Nope.
7) What size monitor do you have and/or plan to have?
He currently has a 20-inch LCD monitor.
8) When do you plan on building/buying the PC?
As soon as possible. He needs it by the start of next month.
9) What features do you need in a motherboard? RAID? Firewire? Crossfire or SLI support? etc.
No RAID, no firewire, and Crossfire or SLI will not be used. Just looking for a decent and stable motherboard that supports the CPU.
10) Do you already have a legit and reusable/transferable OS key/license? If so, what OS? 32bit or 64bit?
Yes he does. He has Windows 7 64-bit retail version.

This is what I have brewing so far:

GPU: Leadtek WinFast GTX 260 EXTREME+

CPU: Intel Core i5-750 Lynnfield 2.66GHz 8MB L3 Cache LGA 1156 95W Quad-Core Processor

MOBO: MSI P55-GD65 LGA 1156 Intel P55 ATX Intel Motherboard

RAM: CORSAIR XMS3 4GB (2 x 2GB) 240-Pin DDR3 SDRAM DDR3 1600 (PC3 12800) Desktop Memory Model CMX4GX3M2A1600C9

CASE: Cooler Master Centurion 5 II RC-502

HDD: WD Caviar Green 500GB

PSU: Antec TruePower New TP-550 550W

CDROM: Just a standard dvdrom. Nothing special here.

This pricetag on such a build here in Japan comes down to around $1,000. I just wanted to be sure that everything is compatible and that none of the parts are poor choices. Would it be a decent gaming PC as well? Thanks for all of your help!

Regards,
Alexander

Get a blue or black HD, like the 640gb WD or samsung F3 500gb. Make sure your videocard has a lifetime warranty.

If your dad plays BC2, then your video card is fine. If he doesn't, then I would go with something like a 5570 for the moment, for two reasons: 1, it will be much quieter and much cooler and much less power-hungry than a GTX260. Also, nobody knows what the system requirements for a BF3, if there is one, will be. Therefore, I wouldn't go with a card that costs about $200 on the off-chance that it will be good enough if and when a BF3 comes along.

Also, I would get a much larger Caviar Black. I thought 2 640GB drives would be enough when I bought my rig; but even a year later, I'm getting the feeling that I'm starting to run out of space and that I'll have to get some more drives before long.

Yeah the Green 500GB is very slow. See if you can get the WD Blue 500GB or the drives that gwarrent007 talked about. GPU wise, ditch the GTX 260 if the HD 5770 costs the same or cheaper. At least here in the states, the GTX 260 is very overpriced so I'm willing to bet it's the same case over in Japan.

Also, I concur with Mr. Pedantic regarding BC2: If he's not gonna play BC2, no point in getting the HD 5770 or GTX 260.

I agree, definitely ditch the green drive. You want a much faster drive for your OS/Apps. Greens are meant for storage only. Oh, and I also agree about the vidcard.
