Hey guys i am gonna try to build a comp for my sister. She is gonna use it to do schoolwork, surf the net, listen to music on Limewire , and print lots of stuff. What kind of part should i get that can do the work at decent speed? And do u think it gonna cost $300-400 or less?

I would start off with:

Antec Aria case and psu
512mb of ram (or 1gb, nice deal on corsair VS over at zzf)
120gb harddrive
p4 with HT

I'll work on the details for you. It should come out in that pricerange.

dont even bother with a p4 a celeron D will be sufficient if they dont do alot of video encoding and/or gaming. You should be able to build sumthin for under $300 that will do everything she wants

Don't ever believe anyone when they want a computer and say they don't need it to play games. After you build it they will then bitch at you because it only does what they told you they wanted it to do. For this kind of thing =>>>> www.dell.com :D

celeron D 320 with any prescott ready mobo (go for the cheap shit like pcchips) and some bobo infineon ram

How much should the speed, FSB, cache, and the micron be?? also what core should it have?

sry that prolly simple stuff but i havent build a comp yet

The Celeron D uses a 533FSB. You can get it in either s478 or the LGA775.

s478 will probably have a cheaper MB since you can essentially get something super cheap like a PCChips :). Examples...

PCChips

ECS w/ Via Chipset

FoxConn w/ SiS Chipset

Just need to make sure they run with the new Prescott 90nm core BEFORE you buy :).

yea the 320 is a sock478 wich runs at 2.4ghz with a 533mhz fsb wich will be plenty for your sis and at only $70 a hell of a deal.

Click on the links and look :p . And I just copied/pasted the 3 cheapest boards that looked like they would support the Celeron D. CHECK BEFORE YOU BUY!! You never know what you're going to get when you're going cheap.

I would just buy a retail PC for her then cuz it would come with a lot of bundeled software and she would get a monitor and all that stuff for like 400-500.

I like the deals dell has on their PC's.

Actually, I agree with that. If something breaks, make Dell fix it :). You can't build a computer for as cheap as Dell sells it, especially if you throw in XP Home and stuff like that.

but i havent build a comp b4 and i thought i could get practice on a cheaper comp so i can build a gaming comp later for myself. :)

I guess you could do that then, but when it comes to your sis it would be better for her to get a retail PC. And you should save some money then bulit your first baby.

It's probably going to cost you $100 extra compared to a Dell. I'm all for practice and stuff like that, but is it worth the extra $100? I'd just find an "old" computer to practice on :).

That being said, whenever someone needs a computer, I just build them one too, so it's not like I follow my own advice :).

If I were you I would go buy a really old PC or see if you could even get one for free, and take that apart and put it back together. ;)

And buy your sister a retail mid-range rig.

ok i found a really old and now ill take the stuff out and then put them back in to get the feeling of how it is.

thx guys

I think I might put that in my sig, or at least my qoute collection!
:p

BTW I also suggest the retail route, but look at HP and other, not just dells. Good Luck!
